I’ll start,
O Holy Night.

Something about this Carol that makes me all arm and Christmassy inside 😍

Bethlehem Down
Adam lay ybounden
Lullay myn lyking
Tomorrow shall be my dancing day

Yes I love Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day!

There are two tunes though and one is far superior imo, I'm going to look up which is which

Edit: it's the John Gardner I like, not the David Willcocks! Whew, glad I cleared that up for myself lol

LookItsMeAgain · 10/12/2023 19:23

I’m fond of the Wexford Carol, Carol of the Bells, Gaudete (love a good Latin carol), Adeste Fedelis and there are two arrangements of O little town of Bethlehem but there’s only one that I really like.

Justcashnosweets · 10/12/2023 19:37

In the Bleak Midwinter, The Holly and the Ivy. Love them 😊

loobylou10 · 10/12/2023 20:37

In the bleak mid winter

whataretherulesss · 10/12/2023 21:39

We've been to the christingle service this evening and I had forgotten how much I love 'come and join the celebration'

Takes me back to primary school, so happy and boppy.

Come and join the celebration
It’s a very special day
Come and share the jubilation
There’s a new King born today!

Oh little town of Bethlehem and once in royal David's city always make me feel very Christmassy..

But a Carol service should also always include
Ding ding merrily on high
Oh come all ye faithful
Silent night
And we 3 kings with the different verses performed by solo male voices of a choir

Perfection!

The worst Xmas carol is the angel gabriel one which says "most highly favoured lady" I don't know why but it just grates on me!

Gabriel's message is my absolute favourite!

fubared · 10/12/2023 21:54

Good King Wenceslas - I never hear it anymore, sadly

Northsideoftheriver · 10/12/2023 21:58

With an up-tempo and joyous melody, Gaudete is perhaps the most well-known Christmas carol performed in Latin. From Classic FM website.

This is my favourite.

WideDyedAndLegless · 10/12/2023 22:10

The Shepherds Farewell
In the Bleak midwinter.
Zither Carol.

sproutsandparsnips · 10/12/2023 22:23

Of the Father's love begotten
Love came down at Christmas
Still Still Still
Hark the Glad Sound
Loving some of these I'd forgotten about. Think I will need to have a listen to them.

FadedRed · 10/12/2023 22:29

Hark! The Herald Angels sing,

(I know it wasn’t asked for but, always thought ‘In the bleak midwinter’ was a dirge and ‘Away in a manger’ should have been pensioned off decades ago, like it’s second verse was.)

Magicmonster · 10/12/2023 22:35

Calypso Carol
and another vote for tomorrow shall be my dancing day and once in royal David city

mathanxiety · 10/12/2023 22:41

O Holy Night, Josh Groban version
The Wexford Carol, Alison Krauss and Yo Yo Ma version

Lilacdressinggown · 10/12/2023 22:43

Little Donkey. So many memories

RowenaCoxwell · 10/12/2023 23:09

I Wonder as I Wander and Gabriel’s Message.
i play in a brass band and when we’re out carolling we tend not to play those, along with other “ sad” sounding carols like In The Bleak Midwinter and Coventry Carol, because people don’t put money in the bucket when we play those!
also love Hail Smiling Morn

Vexxa · 10/12/2023 23:18

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear. I love the imagery of the angels' "harps of gold".

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/12/2023 00:35

It's an obscure one, but my favourite is the Charterhouse Carol. I've not heard it since I was at school (not Charterhouse!). I've only ever found one recording of it.

Charterhouse Carol - Seniors' Carol Service

The Charterhouse Carol, which isn't even sung by Charterhouse anymore, has remained a tradition here since the dawn of time as we know it, or at least since ...

jazzybelle · 11/12/2023 00:37

My fave too.

WrenNatsworthy · 11/12/2023 00:43

Coventry Carol (so sad)
Gaudete
Carol of the bells
Mary did you know

I love anything with medieval harmonies, we are singing the top two in choir next Sunday.

WrenNatsworthy · 11/12/2023 00:44

Oh and Joy to the World!

You must have been at the same school as me @MrsMoastyToasty - I recognise that chapel Grin
That is a favourite for nostalgia though I haven’t sung it in 30 years, but also It Came Upon a Midnight Clear and In the Bleak Mid Winter (the Harold Darke tune -another school favourite)

Hopingforbettertimesoon · 11/12/2023 02:36

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

I love the image it brings of Victorian gentlemen kind of Muppets Christmas Carol style. Also like the bit about saving our souls from Satans power after being led astray! I think I definitely need saving🤣

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/12/2023 06:01

ACynicalDad · 10/12/2023 09:29

Three kings from Persian lands afar

That’s my favourite! Pity there are only two verses, though.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/12/2023 06:07

Personent Hodie is another Latin one we sang at school, so fond Christmassy memories but you hardly hear it any more.
