There are two tunes though and one is far superior imo, I'm going to look up which is which

Edit: it's the John Gardner I like, not the David Willcocks! Whew, glad I cleared that up for myself lol

I’m fond of the Wexford Carol, Carol of the Bells, Gaudete (love a good Latin carol), Adeste Fedelis and there are two arrangements of O little town of Bethlehem but there’s only one that I really like.

In the Bleak Midwinter, The Holly and the Ivy. Love them 😊

i play in a brass band and when we’re out carolling we tend not to play those, along with other “ sad” sounding carols like In The Bleak Midwinter and Coventry Carol, because people don’t put money in the bucket when we play those!

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear. I love the imagery of the angels' "harps of gold".

It's an obscure one, but my favourite is the Charterhouse Carol. I've not heard it since I was at school (not Charterhouse!). I've only ever found one recording of it.

That is a favourite for nostalgia though I haven’t sung it in 30 years, but also It Came Upon a Midnight Clear and In the Bleak Mid Winter (the Harold Darke tune -another school favourite)

I love the image it brings of Victorian gentlemen kind of Muppets Christmas Carol style. Also like the bit about saving our souls from Satans power after being led astray! I think I definitely need saving🤣

That’s my favourite! Pity there are only two verses, though.

Personent Hodie is another Latin one we sang at school, so fond Christmassy memories but you hardly hear it any more.
