I wrote this list for absolutely no reason for my friends. Maybe there was a reason actually. I can't remember. Anyway here it is. Maybe it'll spark an idea for someone and be helpful!!

  1. Mugs! You use them everyday so always think of the person. I like the Anna & Nina funny ones. Also Outlandish Creations. Gorgeous
  2. Other lovely kitchen stuff. Know they need a fruit bowl? Get a lovely one. The Emile Henry bowl is good - veg in the bottom, fruit on the top
  3. Magazine subscription - Private Eye, Grazia. Whatever they like
  4. Anything perishable - we all have enough shit. Give something that disappears after a while
  5. Cinema membership - Curzon, Everyman, Picturehouse. We all have enough shit and people don't go to the cinema enough
  6. Restaurant vouchers - see above re we all have enough shit
  7. You know, I'd take a voucher for a coffee shop. Takeaway coffee is so expensive now!
  8. Socks - it's a classic for a reason. Cashmere
  9. Candles - people say they hate giving/receiving candles. You just aren't spending enough. Buy fancy. Little luxuries don't come more lux than literally burning money
10. A print/poster from their favourite film framed 11. A copy of Private Eye from the day they were born, framed. Sadly mine had Prince Andrew on it :( 12. A really good knife - for someone who likes cooking, obvs. Maybe something random to add to their set - like the Global tomato knife 13. Lisa Eldridge lipstick and matching liner. Love her and her stuff is great 15. Art Fund/Tate membership

Stocking fillers/presents under £10

  1. The milk chocolate honeycomb from Fortnum & Mason
  2. Chocolate generally - needs to be one fancy thing or a really cheap selection box. Adults love a selection box too. NO LINDT
  3. Cheese. Any
  4. Q&A a day five year journal
  5. Roger & Gallet shower gel
  6. The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read
  7. Hotel Chocolat black forest hot chocolate (ok it's about 13 quid)
  8. Rukmini Iyer roasting tin recipe book. Don't know anyone who doesn't love these
  9. The Book of Form and Emptiness - it's a novel
10. Brownies - made by you 11. Nigella Lawson bar nuts - make in bulk, portion off in little bags. DELICIOUS. Have changed this one to add lemongrass and other shit 12. Silk hair ties 13. Skull teaspoons 14. Spacemasks X2 (Amazon sell singles) 15. Bamboo lids for Gu pudding pots (yes really) 16. Stainless steel tube squeezer - for toothpaste, hand cream, tomato puree. People love this shit 17. A card/board game that people will want to play on Christmas day (shit present if languishes in cupboard)

Another top tip - Pay the Selfridges ten quid a year unlimited delivery thing. Send lots of presents on nominated/next day delivery for zero pounds after that initial tenner!! They sell lots of shit and it always turns up looking relatively nice especially if you're posting direct

Side note - NO NOVELTY SHIT. No novelty mugs. No poo bingo. No bullshit buttons. No grow your own hairy beaver. Awful. Straight in the bin. So wasteful

@Mydogisscratching I think I've missed the supply of Mint chocolate oranges - I was looking in Tesco today and couldn't find any 🙁
I didn't mean to sound rude with my comment. Apologies if you took it that way.
But it is very.... random 🤣
I'm getting Lego as my present.

Blimey you haven't missed much! Whoever eats that Terrys choc orange and mint junk?
Run that melting choc across your tongue and feel the grit!

British chocolate has gone to S...t since the asset stripper investment companies took all the dairy joy out of it.....Cadburys Dairy Milk my arse! Cadburys Palm Oil no less! 😢

pinkspeakers · 15/12/2023 11:06

I like lots of your ideas. I've just googled bamboo lids for gu pudding pots for my daughter, thankyou. I agree with all the top list - except mugs!! I almost always hate receiving mugs. I like all my mugs to co-ordinate, so an odd one or two mugs is no good at all.

MonsterTruckMa · 15/12/2023 11:28

RE: number 15, Bamboo Lids for Gu pots - Pringles lids fit too!

Needmorelego · 15/12/2023 11:32

@askmenow I never did find a mint chocolate orange.....so I think I am safe 🤣

flyingvisit · 15/12/2023 12:46

Can I just ask why you would need a lid for a gu pot?

TinkerTiger · 15/12/2023 12:56

The first 2 on your list are absolute PITA for me, I have a small kitchen and have enough things.

@ruthieness vouchers (for regular popular retailers) are easy to use.
If using in store - just hand over to the sales assistant.
If using online you just type the card number in for "payment method".
My aunt send my 15 year old a M+S voucher just the other day.
It took her approximately 4 and a half minutes to find a Pokémon top she liked and order it via their website.
Edit : obviously that's just vouchers for retailers. A bit different for things like Spa Days. Although don't things like that usually have to be booked online? Cash would be a pain because it's almost impossible to deposit actual cash into a bank account because physical banks and ATMs are becoming rare.

Edited

Then use the cash for normal spending and then pay for a spa day with your account?

Needmorelego · 15/12/2023 14:03

@inappropriateraspberry the problem with cash (as much as I want cash to still be used ) is my main supermarket shop I do online. To pay for public transport I either use my contactless card or oyster card. To top up cash into my oyster I have to find a pay point - there aren't as many as there used to be.
(They are my main expenses).
Although to be honest I would only pay for a spa or something if the person had specifically asked for one and I would just pay for it directly. I wouldn't buy a voucher for a spa.

Needmorelego · 15/12/2023 14:11

@inappropriateraspberry that's actually made me realise how little I use cash these days. Everything is online or contactless.
I'm not sure that's a good thing 🤔

Ah, see I live out in the sticks where cash is still king!

Notmetoo · 15/12/2023 14:54

I can't agree about candles. They are completely wasted on me. I don't like lighting them because I worry about the fire risk so they just sit there.

Tina221 · 15/12/2023 14:59

I’m sure I tried this before and the Pringles lid didn’t fit the gu pot.

Thanks op, your thread made me smile.

I dont know anyone who uses a calendar any more except my parents in their 90s.

Me (definitely not 90!)

ADHD is a lot easier to cope with if I Write. Everything. Down. And having upcoming dates on a calendar on the kitchen wall in full view at all times means that I am constantly reminded about forthcoming events/birthdays etc. Otherwise I can easily forget/ignore things like that until the actual morning of the event - cue desperate rearrangement of appointments...

I see this moan about chocolate on mn all the time.

I must be a chocolate philistine.
I adore chocolate oranges. Would happily buy a year's supply when they are cheap at Christmas.
And I still prefer Dairy Milk to any expensive chocolate.

Love Lindt.
Like (some) Thorntons
Love galaxy

This thread reminds me of the Ricky Gervais stand up bit he does where people can't seem to understand that not everything written on the internet is for them in a way that never happens in real life.

Anyway..... I love shit milk chocolate and cashmere socks and candles. So if any of you moaning Minnie's get them for Christmas fling it all my way thanks. 😁

Its almost like people who post online to strangers in public forums asserting their thoughts/opinions as bizarre cocky fact don't realize that thats then open for public opinion and discussion... even if that consensus does not wholly 'agree' with them.

Its like walking into a group of randomers minding their business at a bus stop and asserting out of the blue when no one asked 'we all have too much shit, if you don't like candles you are wrong and just aren't spending enough and lindt chocolate sucks btw'.

Your right it wouldn't happen in real life because its cocky, batshit, lacks any social grace and is simply rude.

OP did not post to her friends, family or a private chat they jumped into a public discussion board so that discussion IS there specifically for users of this forum (all of them).

Phonedown · 15/12/2023 20:23

See I think it's actually more like seeing an advert for some mugs at a bus stop and screaming at it, "I hate mugs!!!"

There is literally no need to for belittling the op! Just smile at your superiority and move on to the next post.

The whole point of adverts is to get people talking.

The whole point of forums is for people to discuss thing.

These things do not have to agree with the the initial post.

If you see a advert for McDonald and say to the people who are ACTIVELY discussing that MacDonald advert, in a hobbie group specifically about discussing MacDonalds adverts that you do not like that ad it is in no way comparative to screaming randomly alone at a bus stop.

Phonedown · 15/12/2023 21:34

Of course you don't have to agree. But calling the op names goes a bit beyond disagreement.

WimbyAce · 17/12/2023 11:49

I am not keen on Lindt either.

Lorralorr · 17/12/2023 22:42

heartsinvisiblefury · 08/12/2023 18:49

Blimey you're a bit of a know it all when it comes to what you think people want OP. I personally think your list sounds shit.

Bloody hell someone is just suggesting a list of a few gift ideas to try and help people out, what is wrong with you, just don’t read it if you don’t like it, why are people so bloody rude!!!

Seaglass7 · 17/12/2023 23:45

10% code still works and the Galaxy projector light is now half-price. I can vouch for it - it's beautiful.

DS would love something like this but I’ve read that some of these projectors are noisy? Is this one silent?

Discwriter · 18/12/2023 00:31

Thanks OP! I like reading other people's lists, while I don't have to personally have all on my wish list, it gives me ideas or inspiration for things I might not have thought of. I wish all the other PPs complaining would give some of their ideas!

Dogwithagammyleg · 14/12/2023 13:29

I dont know anyone who uses a calendar any more except my parents in their 90s.

Calendars are an easy gift idea for kids and even teens, though. Some artists do have them in their merch stores and you can easily design calendars with your DC's favorite singers and it would be a hit, there are literally apps for that.

sweetpickle23 · 19/12/2023 13:50

Gosh, I didn't see the OP's post as smug at all- just some ideas, incase they're helpful for anyone. Their polite responses to people being rude are much nicer than the name calling.

They're just suggestions, it's not mandatory that you purchase any of them. You can just move along if you don't see something for you.
