Blow up bed for MIL?

justanothermanicmonday1 · 03/12/2023 21:36

Hi all,

We have invited our MIL to stay over on Christmas night and unfortunately don't have a guest bed.

Can anyone recommend a blow up bed that doesn't deflate, is sturdy and reasonably priced?

Thank you!

I’d give up my bed for the guest and sleep on the blow up myself

This, especially your MIL!

My granddad has the Yawn one. I've never used it myself, but he loves it. He's 80 and packs it up in his car when he drives over to Ireland to see his sister. He also blows it up downstairs in the living room on the nights he can't face going upstairs to bed and he finds it very comfortable. He puts a thick fleece blanket over it to stop the cold air inside the bed getting to him.

caringcarer · 04/12/2023 00:03

If it's only 1 night the sofa sounds ok provided she has a warm duvet and a pillow.

Pussygaloregalapagos · 04/12/2023 00:04

Can't you give her your bed and get something else for you and DH. It is hard for older generation to sleep anyway even at home, hard in other peoples houses too. It would be such a lovely and respectful gesture.

She co-sleeps with her four month old baby, read the updates?!

Bestway do a deep blow up mattress, I think we paid about £40 previously on Clubcard price and is deeper than a normal mattress. We take it when we stay anywhere and is more than comfortable for a couple of nights x

lobeydosser · 04/12/2023 02:16

Glad you decided on the sofa for your mum in law. I'm sure she'll just be delighted not to have to drive home alone after spending the day with you. If you were my DIL I wouldn't want you to go to unnecessary expense for just one night.
You could sort out an airbed/trundle bed for another time. Plus by then your wee one will be back in a better sleep pattern.
If you do decide to buy an airbed we have the Aerobed one and it's pretty good although it does take up a fair bit of space when not in use.
I would recommend buying a blanket storage bag (or even an extra wash basket) to keep the bedding in during her visit. Then it's immediately to hand when she wants to go to sleep on Christmas night and on Boxing Day she can bung the bedding in and it's out of the way when you bring her a morning cuppa :)

Twiglets1 · 04/12/2023 02:31

I think the sofa is the best choice @justanothermanicmonday1

Im 57 and would prefer that to a blow up bed. Have a bad hip and hard to get up from things close to the ground. You can make her cozy I’m sure and it’s only one night. I wouldn’t dream of taking the bed of a woman co sleeping with a baby even if offered.

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/12/2023 05:10

Do you have a big enough car to put her mattress inside? Or does she have a single one? Could also be an option. Edit - you could use that with the baby and your dh, the sofa. That way you and your dh have a room and your mil has hers. Longer term, I would look at getting a single for your baby’s room if that fits.

YireosDodeAver · 04/12/2023 05:17

This is the best air mattress ever and is genuinely comfortable:

Has anyone ever used this?

Wondering if it's comfortable?

She can always have the sofa as it is huge and very warm and will be comfortable once we add pillows and a big duvet!

Thanks

I have one and it’s great! Folded up it gets used as a chair by DD in her bedroom between uses as an actual bed. I’ve slept on it and it was comfy,

But would that be safe when OP is Co sleeping with a four month old baby?

StamppotAndGravy · 04/12/2023 05:58

We have a high durabeam airbed that is as comfortable as a normal bed, and much more comfortable than a camp bed. I suspect the people saying they don't exist have only slept on camping lilos.

You have to put blankets on the floor and between bed and wall first to stop it squeaking and you have to put a layer on top (either a thick duvet or the mattress topper from your bed) before you put a sheet on otherwise it's cold.

StamppotAndGravy · 04/12/2023 06:03

Btw, this bed is bed height! Airbeds aren't just mattresses on the floor anymore, they're proper inflatable pieces of furniture, much higher than z-beds. Definitely worth a new look for all those with dodgy hips. It will be much more comfortable than the sofa.

We have this one, I’ve slept very well on it numerous times. It’s really comfortable.

TerfTalking · 04/12/2023 06:08

I e used something like this many times for sleepovers, better than a blow up and easier to store than a camp bed.Roll up

We bought similar to these from lidl for camping very comfortable on the floor. If she has bad knees she just needs to get on all 4’s and use the couch to help herself up. I would recommend these over an air mattress. Just read you have a big enough sofa to put it on so that’s better than the floor.

Good for you but either way the OP still needs a decent airbed, which was the point of her post.

I’d hate the idea of DS and DDIL giving up their bed for me. I’ve slept on a blow up bed at theirs before now - it was fine - though they now have a bigger place and a spare bed.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 03/12/2023 21:44

Do people just like to leave bitchy comments without context?

I have a small baby who is going through a very rough 4 month regression who won't sleep in her cot. Therefore we have to co sleep. So a blow up bed for me won't be safe for the baby. The baby won't settle with DP in the night.

Jesus.

It does seem strange to invite your MIL to stay over at your house but having no bed for her.

Dollmeup · 04/12/2023 07:09

I'd offer her the choice of either good quality airbed or sofa and let her decide.

If you do go for airbed go for a more expensive one and make sure it's double height, especially if her knees aren't great. We have one and while it's not as good as a real bed obviously, we have slept on it a few times and it was fine. Definitely use an extra duvet or fleece blanket underneath though as they aren't as warm as a normal mattress.

Mirabai · 04/12/2023 07:38

Surely you discussed this with MIL when you invited her to stay? Surely you asked her which of the options she’d prefer - sofa, blow up bed? She may well prefer to drive home if it’s only 20 min!

This. Particularly if elderly. Is a no brainier for a night or two, or even a few nights.

Why do you assume the OP’s MIL is “elderly”? The OP has a new baby so unless she gave birth in her 50s it’s highly unlikely her MIL is anywhere near advanced age.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 04/12/2023 08:16

This has made me laugh. We bought blow up air beds for my parents to stay for one night. We all went to bed and heard much hilarity coming from the room my mum and dad were in. We went in to find my mother rolling around the floor laughing hysterically. Apparently every time she got on the bed she rolled off again. They gave up and slept on the sofas.
