Blow up bed for MIL?

justanothermanicmonday1 · 03/12/2023 21:36

Hi all,

We have invited our MIL to stay over on Christmas night and unfortunately don't have a guest bed.

Can anyone recommend a blow up bed that doesn't deflate, is sturdy and reasonably priced?

Thank you!

Op, get a yawn bed, I have two, one double, one king, that I use when I’ve a proper house full . (You can also get them in singles) . Don’t be tempted by other brands. They honestly feel close to sleeping in a normal bed. Don’t over inflate as as obviously once a body on it it needs to be able to take the weight.

Has anyone ever used this?

Wondering if it's comfortable?

She can always have the sofa as it is huge and very warm and will be comfortable once we add pillows and a big duvet!

Thanks

I would do that to be honest, give her the sofa and save you to buy anything

That doesn’t look comfy to me, too close to floor.and sofa isn’t great either.

We have this from argos. £100 and it’s brill https://www.argos.co.uk/product/6181064

@Haveallthesongsbeenwritten it's only for one night so I think I might to be honest. She said she'd happily have the sofa. Bless her she's just so thrilled to be staying as she lost her DH so she's on her own. I just want her to be comfortable. X

I’m similar age and sleep on an inflatable bed when I stay with my son in USA. No idea of the make but it’s normal bed height and very comfortable so they do exist.

If you get it get the yawn sheet, it’s got an elastic strap so it fits over headboard. But yeah they are a million miles from the little thin blow up ones which deflate in the night.

One night on the sofa with duvet and pillows will be fine 😊

If it's going to be a regular use bed , then IKEA have a few /
We bought DS a Lykesele 3 seater (they used to have 1 seaters but also stock 2 seaters . Lasted him years , we did get the best matress in the choices .
There's a KIVIK one seater but I don't know what that's like (pricey at £450 but it folds up to a useful chair)

Airbeds are hit and miss , I bought different ones over the years including Aerobeds ( they did special offers on QVC at one time)

You need a layer like a mattress protector otherwise you're on sweaty rubber , even if it's got a flock cover )
You need to make sure it's high enough to get in/out of comfortably too . And the inflation can be noisy .

If it hasn't got a pump you can get them easily . Or a hairdryer on "Cool" setting .

Amazon Basics Self Inflating Airbed. We have this and it's brilliant. Really sturdy and comfortable. When our bed frame was failing DH said the airbed was more comfy than our bed, and I lent it to a friend for her 80 year old father who was visiting and he found it good too.

It is nothing like the old fashioned airbeds where you're right on the floor!

But it won’t be the only night, right? You’d have her back again? If so, get a proper inflatable bed.

OhHowTheDogsStackUp · 03/12/2023 22:08

I've got quite an expensive airbed. It was a while before I could get my furniture out of storage when I got my house because I needed to get carpets in first. Talk about a sinking feeling. I woke up on the floor so often, I ended up sleeping on a rug piled with blankets. At least then I started off on the floor!

It was actually surprisingly comfortable.

I'd recommend a camp bed with a futon mattress on top. I camp a lot and the best and warmest sleep I ever got was when I got my camp bed.

I absolutely refuse to sleep on cheap airbeds when I'm camping. Waking up three or four times a night to reinflate it does not a good night's sleep make!

I don't know about beds that blow up but last Xmas I bought my MIL an electric chair.
Talk about ungrateful, she hasn't even plugged it in!

To be fair Cellar I think the footbath you bought to go with it might've been off putting Xmas Wink

I bought the Yawn bed last Christmas. Thought I’d finally cracked it, it was brilliant and everyone raved about it. My parents visited again about 2 months later and it deflated on them overnight. Was only ever used for about 8 nights before it failed. Back to the drawing board this year……

Avatartar · 03/12/2023 22:15

vango shangrila self inflating mattress is awesome. Tricky to wrestle back in the bag as prefers to stay inflated.just make sure MIL can roll onto knees etc to stand up off the floor

Helenahandkart · 03/12/2023 22:22

When we had visitors I got a single mattress from freecycle and then passed it on to someone else once we were done with it.

HardcoreLadyType · 03/12/2023 21:48

We have the aero beds linked above.

You plug them in to the electricity and they inflate automatically. They are the height of a normal bed.

The only thing about them is, they are not as warm as a normal bed, because they are filled with air, which is the same temperature as the room, and doesn’t warm up. I find in winter that you need a quilt underneath, as well as one on top.

Yes! Agree with this. Mil has this for when we stay at hers - perfectly comfy for a few nights but chilly - had never thought of the quilt underneath and always take extra cosy pjs!

Alondra · 03/12/2023 22:29

I stay overnight regularly with friends in their 2 bedroom apartment. One of their bedrooms is a dual office/guest bedroom, and invested on an airbed they could store away when it wasn't needed. They bought 3/4 years ago a King Koil Luxury air bed mattress, and it's superb. They are expensive but really excellent.

therealcookiemonster · 03/12/2023 22:41

I echo the point about sleeping on sofa. I often fall asleep on the sofa and don't wake till morning lol.

DeerWatch · 03/12/2023 22:42

Jay-be fold up beds are good and several choices depending on your budget. I have just turned 60 and pretty fit and nimble but wouldn't fancy a night on a blow up mattress.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 03/12/2023 21:42

That's great.

I have a small baby who isn't sleeping well so we are co sleeping and would rather keep my own bed for that reason. Thanks

I don’t blame you! I wouldn’t give up my bed either

Sundaefraise · 03/12/2023 22:44

theduchessofspork · 03/12/2023 21:54

Yes I’d say the same

And if storage is a problem they don’t take up as much room as a camp bed.

you can sleep fine on a decent air bed

Yes, I would say the same about the temperature. All the air underneath makes it cold and you definitely need several covers on the bottom. But they are a great height compared to normal blow up beds and I slept on one for quite a few weeks when I was ill last year and was very comfortable.

thegreylady · 03/12/2023 22:45

What about this from Amazon? You can make it more comfortable with a spare duvet to lie on and it would be useful as a spare charge.
