Blow up bed for MIL?

justanothermanicmonday1 · 03/12/2023 21:36

Hi all,

We have invited our MIL to stay over on Christmas night and unfortunately don't have a guest bed.

Can anyone recommend a blow up bed that doesn't deflate, is sturdy and reasonably priced?

Thank you!

A decent airbed these days are a vast improvement on the old ones which were little better than a lilo. I've got a full height one which plugs into the mains to inflate. I've always slept well on it. I find a duvet underneath the sheet helps to.make it more comfortable although it does have a flocked surface so the sheet stays put. I got it either from Argos or Amazon. It's really fine.

Sofa absolutely sounds like your best bet, pick up a cheap duvet to go underneath to make it a bit softer and then plenty of pillows / duvet and a blanket if it gets chilly. Will be much easier getting on and off & should be fine for one night, had many accidental but comfy sleeps on my sofa!

TiptoeTess · 03/12/2023 23:04

Ive got one of these. Stays plugged in and so keeps its pressure- we never hear it reinflating but it must do- and comfortable :)

I’d give up my bed for the guest and sleep on the blow up myself

Me too, especially the older generation.

The JML one on legs is brilliant, I used mine at dp's when we first moved in, we slept on it for 6 months, it's just like a proper bed & you can use fitted sheets etc. To make it warmer, put a duvet on at a topper.

I absolutely will do this I think.

I'll show DMIL how to turn the heating on the living room if it gets chilly!

Thanks for all the wonderful advice.

DMIL only lives 20 min drive, but thought it would be nice for her to stay at Christmas since she lives alone!

And I don't fancy her driving back in the dark when it's cold and icy!

Sorry, typed before reading through!

In your case op I am sure the sofa will do as she’s sounds happy just to be with you 😊. Can you put a duvet on the sofa and then bedding for her? should be absolutely fine for a night or two like that.

The Intex double height airbeds are great.

Come with a built in pump.

I got one from the Range and spent last four months of pregnancy on it as my hips couldn't take anything else.

As PP said, they can be colder so put a blanket or throw on it then then fitted sheet.

I think double height is easier than a mattress on ground and they store more easily.

She's in her early 60s however doesn't have the best knees, so this is very useful thank you.

We have a huge corner sofa she can take, my DP has been sleeping there since me and DC have been co sleeping, but it isn't the comfiest to sleep on. Either way we need something else!

Will look into this.

Thank you!

@justanothermanicmonday1

I'm 54, I'll take the sofa please.

when I was younger I'd sleep on anything.

My knees are now fucked & I can't get up from something like an air bed or now off the floor.

I don't care how 'comfortable' the sofa is compared to a bed. But I do care about being able to get up!!!

Coukd you look at putting a single bed in the baby's room? (One the baby will eventually move into)??

JMSA · 03/12/2023 23:14

Hi OP. I had an Aerobed years ago, and it was fab! It self-inflates (if memory serves me right) to the height of a normal bed. And it had a flocked surface so didn't feel too cold.
Otherwise I'd look on Gumtree for a Z-bed or similar. Better to go good quality secondhand than cheap new. Many people have these things in spare rooms and they barely get used. Alternatively, is there no-one you can borrow from as it's only 1 night?
Good luck!

Calmdown14 · 03/12/2023 23:14

If you can get one at this price you are on a winner

We have something similar and it's comfy. But also quite bulky to store. If your MIL is happy to use the sofa this year I reckon that's probably the easiest solution.

Yeah we will get her a double duvet to make sure she's lovely and toasty and some nice pillows! She definitely won't be uncomfortable in the slightest! X

I'm in my sixties and my knees are going. I'll sleep on anything, so long as it's raised a good bit off the ground. Personally I prefer the fishing bed-chairs, but a fold up bed is fine, or the sofa. Just please, not a floor-level air bed. I'd never get up again!

Beamur · 03/12/2023 23:16

My reply was to the fold up memory foam bed..

EeesandWhizz · 03/12/2023 23:16

We ended up buying the Jay-be Crown Premier - it was quite expensive, about £200 + cover, but it's really comfortable and we don't have a spare bedroom so it spends a lot of time in the living room, folded with the cover on like a table behind a sofa. Far better than an airbed and a lot less faff.

This. Particularly if elderly. Is a no brainier for a night or two, or even a few nights.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 03/12/2023 23:23

@crumpet how about you stop being so judgemental and read the comments.

I have a 4 month old baby who is currently in the middle of a sleep regression.

We are co sleeping.

She won't settle in the night with her DF.

So me sleeping in a blow up bed is a sofa is not safe.

Piss off.

I have spent many nights on an airbed and have been comfortable, but in a sleeping bag which is warm underneath and doesn't fall off when zipped up. I've also slept on a variety of sofas, which are definitely more comfortable! All while visiting children and over the last 22 years.

KatBurglar · 03/12/2023 23:25

With bad knees there's no way an air bed is going to work. They are a nightmare, even the double height ones. (when my knees worked I was happy sleeping on anything).

We bought a trundle bed - a single bed on a frame with legs that collapse down flat so we could store it under our double bed when not needed. It worked for my father with arthritis really well.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 03/12/2023 23:27

Thanks everyone for your helpful recommendations and tips.

We will give DMIL the sofa to sleep on. It's huge and she's tiny so I'm sure that'll be more than fine for her. We will ensure she has a duvet and pillows etc and it's nice and warm in the living area too.

Thanks again.

Have you got a spare room you could put a proper bed in, your child will eventually use it

Grumpynan · 03/12/2023 23:32

I know I’m late to the post, but thought I would mention we bought this last year, my 65 yr old DH has slept on it and said it’s very comfortable

Do people just like to leave bitchy comments without context?

I have a small baby who is going through a very rough 4 month regression who won't sleep in her cot. Therefore we have to co sleep. So a blow up bed for me won't be safe for the baby. The baby won't settle with DP in the night.

Jesus.

Over-reaction much.

thebestinterest · 03/12/2023 23:53

If you’re inviting your MIL to leave her comfortable bed to come to you, you should consider letting her have a real bed or getting an in expensive, quality mattress (nectar, Casper, the options are endless!). Blowups are not comfortable.

and these mattresses can be directly placed on the floor.
