What do you wear on Christmas Day?!

I was chatting with my coworkers earlier about what they wear on Christmas Day and it got pretty heated!

I personally enjoy wearing PJs for pretty much the whole day, even if people are coming round. I appreciate the stretchy waist band (more room for treats) and I'd rather be comfortable when there's so much going on.

I'm really intrigued to know what everyone else does and what's normal in your house

We go for a meal, so for me (31 mum of two young DS's) lightly sparkling black jumper dress tights and ankle boots.

RaraRachael · 01/12/2023 19:42

It's usually just me and OH or a few close family. I hate getting dressed up for anything and really can't see the point of doing that in my own house. I'd probably be wearing a jumper and jeans. I always find it a bit odd to see people all dressed up to the nines to eat dinner in their own home but each to their own.

We usually wear our normal clothes but this year we're doing 1980s Christmas, so I'll be wearing a velvet dress and a cardigan with shoulder pads.

Brilliant idea - that sounds like great fun :-)

I wear pjs. Always have. Long before I came on mumsnet!

I get a new pair of pjs to unwrap Christmas morning, and I put those on. So always clean and fresh. Same for my DS.

Even if we got to FILs for Christmas day, I still wear pjs. Though DH frowns at this.

DH wears jeans, tshirt and hoodie.

StampOnTheGround · 01/12/2023 20:10

100% pyjamas - and that wouldn't change even if people were coming round, always have and always will - comfy, cosy and it just feels christmassy

Those of you who wear PJs, do you just stay in the pjs you slept in or do you do your usual morning routine and then put on clean pjs instead of getting dressed?

Obviously everyone showers and changes into clean clothes (pj’s) - in our case we have three generations staying with us from both sides of our family. No christmas pj’s but everyone puts a lot of effort into their choice. I think my DMIL has Barbie ones this year - she’s nearly 80!

Mine are gorgeous - can’t wait to wear them.

I like to dress quite fancy on Xmas day!
Usually a skirt with tights and a nice top.
Or a dress with tights.
Usually heels! I think this is because my mum and sister usually do the same. And we're usually at my parents house who put on quite a posh small, table is fully decorated etc. it's also nice to get a photo of us all to look back on.

Would I like to dress down on Xmas day - hell yeah! I imagine that would be so much more relaxed!

pinkfongg · 01/12/2023 20:15

Did not mean to say usually x 3 there 😂

Heels indoors? At this time of year we’re in snow boots and all outdoor footwear is left by the front door.

Running clothes to start with for a 10 mile run with dogs and then a sparkly top, skirt and boots for lunch with change into trainers for afternoon dog walk.I don't own PJs and even if I did I'd never wear them during the day, there is too much to do outdoors.

Beaverbridge · 01/12/2023 20:29

Green velvet dress from charity shop, £4!. Boxing day which is granddaughters birthday, black top with red sparkly Robins and red and black skirt, also from charity shop £5 and £3 respectively. Back home following day old joggers and sweat shirt.

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 01/12/2023 20:31

Depends if we are eating in or out, we often alternate. This year eating in, I think I'll wear my festive but comfortable Joe Browns Christmas wrap dress. If eating out often something with some sequins, last year my silver sequin skirt, black top and red suede boots.

Mumofmarauders · 01/12/2023 20:46

We get dressed up-ish. I wear the same silvery grey dress I've worn on Christmas Day for the last ten years, kids wear smarting shirts/jumpers and my husband wears a shirt and a new jumper. It's all comfy stuff because I absolutely agree how rubbish would it be to not be comfortable? Specially as we do a long walk in the morning. But it feels right to make it special by wearing special clothes. And our four parents all come for lunch and dress similarly too.

Frenchfancy · 01/12/2023 21:16

I love getting dressed up on Christmas day. I don't go to any Christmas parties so it's the only time I get to put on a frock.

I dress up the house and the table, why not me?

oohyoudevilyou · 01/12/2023 21:36

Just jeans with a christmassy top, but with make-up, perfume, jewellery, hair done etc
Can I ask the folk who wear PJ's all day... Do you wear undies with them? I don't wear bra and pants in bed with PJ's but can't imagine feeling dressed without underwear downstairs all day. And do you get showered, put on deodorant etc? And what about your partners...do they wear boxers underneath or just hang loose? The only time I've ever worn pyjamas in the daytime is when I've been quite ill...I'm obviously very uptight!

User93993993 · 01/12/2023 21:41

Same as I wear every other day.

LuckySantangelo35 · 01/12/2023 21:47

All those people saying they will be wearing pyjamas all day cos they want to be “comfy” - can’t you be comfy in clothes?!

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 01/12/2023 21:50

I like to dress up a bit on Christmas Day. Last Christmas we travelled 100s of miles to SIL/BILs and on the day I wore a black cashmere sweater, black sequin midi and beautiful suede boots. There's no way I would have turned up on Christmas Day to someone else's house having made zero effort.

They were all in tracksuits looking as if they'd just rolled out of bed. It didn't feel special at all!

FelicityFlops · 01/12/2023 22:08

Very much depends where I am.
In the tropics, generally beachwear during the day and something smart in linen or silk for the evening.
Skiing, obviously skiing kit during the day and then something suitable for dining and dancing in the evening.
At home with nobody around, just normal clothes, so cashmere jumper and velvet or cord trousers.
When visiting I take my cue from whoever has invited me, although this year I may very well wear almost exactly what I wore 10 years ago, which will be a cashmere jumper and some jacquard-like trousers (the same trousers, but not the same jumper).

3amShopper · 03/12/2023 16:15

I think I'm going to go with a short black velvet dress, sparkly tights and (new because I'm going to order them but they'll be my Christmas present off DH) doc martens. I've lost quite a bit of weight over the last year (nearly five stone!) And will hopefully be my dream goal weight by Christmas day. I'm also having new perfume and will wear a bit of make up.

DS will have a new set of trackies and t-shirt. DH will wear whatever is clean.

RandomnMe · 04/12/2023 17:04

Jeggings and a Christmas jumper. First thing I exercise on my Peloton as I feel better, in which case I put gym gear on. Yoga too. I even put make up on!

MrsCarson · 04/12/2023 18:05

Comfy jeans, a decent top and a Christmas pinny as I'm in and out of the kitchen and I'm good at splashing stuff on my tops.

Frenchfancy · 04/12/2023 18:47

Congratulations on your weight loss @3amShopper . That's amazing. Definitely need a lovely dress to show it off!

Hadjab · 04/12/2023 19:25

Sequins. From Christmas Eve to New Year's Day, and the weird bit in between.
