What do you wear on Christmas Day?!

I was chatting with my coworkers earlier about what they wear on Christmas Day and it got pretty heated!

I personally enjoy wearing PJs for pretty much the whole day, even if people are coming round. I appreciate the stretchy waist band (more room for treats) and I'd rather be comfortable when there's so much going on.

I'm really intrigued to know what everyone else does and what's normal in your house

Something smartish-casual and a bit festive. Definitely not pyjamas - I only wear them in bed. I associate nightwear during the day with being ill, not with special occasions!

PurBal · 01/12/2023 16:42

Dress up. But SIL prefers Xmas PJs so if we’re together there’s a bit of a mismatch.

Papayahd · 01/12/2023 16:46

Normally a pair of baggy shorts and a Christmas jumper or T-shirt.

Carouselfish · 01/12/2023 16:49

A velvet dress! Have several, rust coloured, teal, red and black.

I'm with you. And in real life I con't know anyone who wears pyjamas all day. Its another MN 'thing'.

A nice matching loungewear set to wake up in and do stockings, presents, breakfast. Then we all go off and get dressed into sparkly dresses and DH wears slacks and a nice shirt. I wear heels every day anyway but I bring out my sparkliest on Christmas. We love dressing up.

BarbedButterfly · 01/12/2023 17:25

We go to lovely PIL. I suspect they have got matching pjs for us all this year and then we dress up for dinner. I just got a lovely red dress with embroidered sleeves

I buy myself a new Christmas dress every year. So would my Mum, Granny, Sisters and aunties. Men would wear smart shirts and jackets. I’d have to be terminally ill to sit and eat a meal at the dining table in pyjamas, I’d feel like such a slob. My children would have new clothes for the big day. Daughter would have a red tartany sort of dress, matching tights etc. We have very big family and see a lot of people on Christmas Day, so that’s probably why, even if it was just my immediate family, I’d still dress up.

Those of you who wear PJs, do you just stay in the pjs you slept in or do you do your usual morning routine and then put on clean pjs instead of getting dressed?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 01/12/2023 18:30

I used to get semi-dressed up - mainly following traditions of the older generation who are no longer with us. Last couple of years I've worn joggers and a Christmas sweatshirt . I may wear a sparkly jumper dress this year .

Cumulonimbusincus · 01/12/2023 18:42

When I was married to ex-DH it was always maximum glamour for Christmas Day. Now I’m married to wonderful DH and we have small children, so it’s PJs all day. When the DCs are older I’ll go back to glamour but for now comfort is where it’s at.

I don't wear PJs to sleep in, so mine are clean on! 😬 (Although technically I wear lounge wear/ath leisure) Ditto DH. I turn a blind eye to what DCs do, but encourage a clean pair to be worn Christmas Eve...

Presumably you wouldn't come across us IRL, as we're the ones who spend the day not going out or letting anyone in? 😂

Hibernatalie · 01/12/2023 18:48

Varies, this year we're going for lunch at my mums and I'm going to wear a dark red velvet jumpsuit.

ThreeRingCircus · 01/12/2023 18:57

Comfortable and festive so that's usually leggings and a Christmas jumper. Something I can relax in but wouldn't be embarrassed about if guests dropped by.

Ladypugs60 · 01/12/2023 19:03

We go out to a restaurant for our Christmas lunch so I like to go a little dressed up. This year I will be wearing a winter white pencil midi skirt with a winter white light knit
jumper with a little gold sparkle and nude heels.
Thank God I'm not a messy eater!!! DH wears a smart jumper and shirt, and the rest of my family make a smart/casual effort.
Once we are back home, we are back in our joggers and Christmas t shirts.

pollyglot · 01/12/2023 19:05

Shorts and tee. Hat too if we have a barbie.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/12/2023 19:09

Comfy bottoms, smarter ones, and a Christmas jumper.

notahappybunny7 · 01/12/2023 19:10

I’ll be home just me and my daughter from 23rd evening till Boxing Day and it’s pjs all the way. We see family and do Christmas events all December and over new year, so I will cook us a lovely turkey dinner and we will chill, craft, board games, tv for 2 whole days! Can’t wait!!

User0000009 · 01/12/2023 19:15

If we go out/round to family I’ll dress up. Something spangly. We always had new clothes to wear on Christmas Day as children. If I’m cooking with just the 4 of us at home I’ll wear comfy bottoms and my black and gold top

NonPlayerCharacter · 01/12/2023 19:22

Anything loose or with an elasticated waist.

MythicBish · 01/12/2023 19:26

Pjs until after presents, then shower get dressed into something nicer but comfy as we go out for a walk etc (leather look leggings, nice red high neck blouse and christmas earrings)

Then fresh PJ's in the evening about 7pm

Tribblesarelovely · 01/12/2023 19:33

After years and years of hosting it’s now just the two of us for Christmas Day, so it’s new PJs for us . Just comfortable chilling out.

Coffeeandcatsforlife · 01/12/2023 19:35

I really struggle with clothes in general, so I’m always in pjs when at home. Christmas is no different. I want to be comfortable so I wear what I want. Christmas is just my close family but even in the past with extended family I will wear my pjs in my home.

Twilight7777 · 01/12/2023 19:37

Comfortable but dressed up clothing, usually new, but with Christmas slippers
