What do you do with your chocolates?

ShufflingHedgehogs · 16/11/2023 14:49

Maybe it's just us, but each year we buy tubs of wrapped chocolates, like Quality Street or Roses - or something a bit nicer Grin

I never know what to do with them. I want to put them out around the house so everyone can just grab what they want but I hate having the plastic tubs lying about.

Does anyone have any inventive ideas for putting out chocolates in a decorative way?

I did think of a large glass jar, like a biscotti jar. I am just worried it might be a bit heavy?

Just keep them in the fridge where they belong 😂😂

I've got this Christmas Tree jar! I love it, it's really big and looks much nicer in person and I filled one jar with a 350g bag of Terry's Segments, a 300g bag of those wrapped mini Cadbury Crunchies and a 400g box of mixed Dairy Milk Chunks, so it holds loads.

Well, I was thinking I didn't need any new decorations this year... I hadn't ever thought of cute bowls for the sweets/chocolate!

So thank you for this thread!

longtompot · 17/11/2023 22:06

We used to tie sewing thread onto them and hang them on the tree. Depending on what size dog you have and what size tree you have, will decide if this would be safe for you to do. You could do it on the top third or half.

Put them straight in your mouth?!
😁

This made me laugh as the first answer I could think of was “I… eat them?!”

grumpycow1 · 18/11/2023 00:09

I like the idea of buying a vintage quality street tin and putting them in there - or the nice M&S tins might do.

ADHDQueen · 18/11/2023 00:43

I just tend to eat the f***s tbh. 😆

Me too.

But I tend to set myself a start date, before which they must be seen but not eaten 😁

Thanks everyone for some lovely suggestions. For various reasons this Christmas is a collection of people that have had a tough year, people I love but haven't seen in a while or people who had a very bad Christmas last year.

I want to make this one extra special. While I realise that doesn't really depend on the chocolates being in the most lovely bowl, I like to think all the little touches go towards that. Even if they only last a day before everyone has eaten them!! Grin

One of those big Italian pannetone tins would be nice to keep Christmas chocolates in.

This is nice from IKEA (26cm diameter) or loads of jats there , if you CBA trekking over there and can resist buying meatballs and 30 wine glasses .
Also you can stock up on mini Daim bars . ...Xmas Grin

Just a tip, go for lots of small bowls then you keep topping them up for a few days

^. This. Chocolate MUST be kept in the fridge. It is the law.

LouLou198 · 18/11/2023 20:06

I use empty Woodwick glass bowls, the oval shaped ones.

Anyone else remember, as a small kid, the utter excitement at Christmas chocolate Santas hanging on their Grandparents' tree?!

<nostalgic flashback to the '70s/'80s>

More lovely ideas!

Those Zara candy cane bowls are sweet. Actually, they have a few nice bits on that page.

Yes, I like the idea of dotting them about in small bowls - and out of the reach of the dog!

We used to hang chocolate Santas on our tree when I was a kid. Maybe the reason I am currently paranoid about the dog eating the chocs is because one year I ate them all off the tree and then blamed our dog Grin

My ruse did not work. I was rumbled.

On a related note, please don’t throw away the tubs. Most schools can use them for pens, felt tips etc. at our school, we use them for taking home stuff made in Food Tech when kids forget to bring a container and many other things.

KitKatsforever · 18/11/2023 22:00

I have never ever heard of this- putting chocs out.

Is this a new thing?

I'm 60. As a child my parents maybe had a box of QS and passed them around us kids or any family over.

As an adult now, I don't buy chocs to leave around the house.
I might buy some nice ones as gifts for people, but it's not something I'd even consider as 'entertaining' .

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/11/2023 22:03

These are nice :

Topsyturvy78 · 18/11/2023 22:13

I just leave them in the tubs. Especially with roses and quality street I like to know what I'm eating. Can't stand the soft centres apart from caramel. I suppose I could just take them out. Nobody in our family likes them anyway.

Nutellaonall · 18/11/2023 22:15

Hide them as my kids would eat them all up till they were sick!

Topsyturvy78 · 18/11/2023 22:21

I'm a pig I usually buy all 4 I just can't pick a couple. I'm trying to cut down though so got 2 this year. Not started on them yet. 🤣🤣🤣

We have a festive plate that was decorated at one of those pottery painting places Grin
