Panettone.....just a big dry cake?

What do people do with this Italian fare?

I really want to like them but the only one I ever had, given as a gift, was very dry.

Are you supposed to toast it and add butter?

I agree. They seem to be style over substance. The only one I ever enjoyed was one with chocolate chips in which I put in the microwave for 20-30 secs to melt the chocolate. Otherwise they are dry and dull.

I love Panettone and very rarely have dry one. Pannetonne is lovely dipped in coffee! I buy the mini ones so they dont last very long once opened

You can make fantastic bread and butter pudding if you want to use up dry or disappointing panettone.

Not keen myself, so many other far more delicious offerings to be consumed at this time of year.

They shouldn't be dry. They should be light, fluffy and moist, especially with the little bits of candied fruit in them.

I don't understand them either. Even a posh one is meh and usually dry.

There is a limit to how much bread and butter pudding I want to eat, which is the only use for them.

All dry and boring, sitting in boxes for weeks on end, No thanks

My italian SIL says nobody in her home village eats them, they just pass round the same box round to each other 😂.

I've never been much of a fan, although we were given one with loads of orange & lemon peel in it one year, and I used it to make panettone bread & butter pudding.

I like panettone, I'll take yours off your hands! Moist, light, a little bit of spice - just lovely.

I much prefer a slice of fruit cake.

It's more of a sweet bread than a cake. Good ones are fantastic, and they shouldn't be too dry.

I've only ever had it served with cream. I thought everyone did this.

I always hated them, then I got a chocolate chip one, my DC loved it so I tried it and it was delicious.

You can make THE BEST bread and butter pudding using panettone and, preferably, orange curd (or lemon curd will do). I just realised yesterday that with Wilko having now departed, my ability to stock up on massive amounts of cheap panettone is also gone and I am bereft.

I love pannetone! We go through loads at Christmas. We eat it like a slice of bread with butter.

M&S panettone slightly warmed with clotted cream and candid fruit is a thing of pure joy

I know it's incredibly inauthentic but the M&S triple chocolate one is my favourite thing about Christmas. It has chocolate sauce rippled through it so it doesn't get dry. I have often wondered if I could eat a whole one in one sitting. I think I probably could.

My Italian friend slices them from the top down and stacks it with whipped cream in layers into the shape of a Christmas tree - works with the non round ones obviously- it's lovely with cream. Alternatively toasted with butter or made into bread and butter pudding.

This is the only good use for them, IMO

Oh, this takes me back! Virgin Trains used to serve this as first class breakfast on weekends. You’d see everyone who’d booked 1st getting excited and waiting for their cooked breakfast….to be served a panettone and an apple 😂. They had lots of negative feedback IIRC.

I love it. But I think you get what you pay for with Panettone. Try an expensive, authentic Italian one. With whipped cream.
