I picked up one of my favourite things to put away for Christmas in my shopping today. It was a stollen - I absolutely love it!

What are your favourite Christmas foods?

We will be doing the same. It’s just me and 2 teens Christmas Day, everyone seems to want to stay at home on their own these days, I don’t really like my mums new partner/husband so I can’t invite them over. Christmas use to be quite a big family occasion when I was a child but it doesn’t seem to be anymore. We will probably just have a roast chicken.

I have friends that have their Christmas dinner on xmas eve, thus freeing up Christmas Day with presents and children. Then they eat the left overs on Christmas Day, as you would Boxing Day - cold meat, jacket potato and pickles

redjoker · 03/11/2023 14:37

Mince pies (sainsburys bakery 4 pack ONLY)
CHEESE, all the fancy cheese
Homemade sausage rolls (I add stuffing to mine and make them for my neighbors)
Honestly just all of it

this year someone is cooking a xmas day dinner for me for the first time in 12 years (!!)) thats the best gift of all

Nuts in their shells. It feels like I’m doing a bit more work if I crack them myself!
Walnuts, Brazil nuts and monkey nuts especially. Pistachios don’t last long either.
I sit in the corner, listening to the chat around me and systematically demolish them. People occasionally put out their hand and get whatever I’ve just opened.

A huge xmas memory I have is of my grandad in the corner with his bag of mixed nuts, only time of year he had them, can remember the sound, smell of it everything, glorious

that would be my perfect xmas cake, do you make your own or buy it? If you buy it where from? If you make it, can you share the recipe :) thanks

@anoldcharter I keep saying I’m going to make my own then never get round to it 😅
Still haven’t found that perfect one yet unfortunately 😅 Co-op one is alright but still not perfect lol

Vettrianofan · 03/11/2023 14:49

Christmas use to be quite a big family occasion when I was a child but it doesn’t seem to be anymore. We will probably just have a roast chicken.

My parents died almost 9 and 6 years ago and my siblings all live over 200 miles away, have their own families and in laws that they do things with.

DFiL is 300 miles away in a different direction and, due to failing memory (awaiting formal diagnosis but expecting it to come back as dementia), prefers not to travel anymore plus has 2 other children and grandchildren in the area so will go to them. DMiL lives locally but will go to DH’s sister for Christmas dinner as she lives over the road; we would in it’s her but the answer would be likely no.

DH had 2 older children - DSD in London with her own life and working all round Christmas so won’t have the time off for a trip down to the West Country. DSS lives with his ex partner and their 4 children (plus some random friend of his) not to mention a cat & dog; they’re only about 25 miles away but it takes an hour each way and the only driver in the family is me so, if they were to come to us, I’d have to do 2 round trips to get them to us and back home again so no drinking Buck’s Fizz while I’m cooking dinner not to mention the disruption to our family day - and we’d never get an invite over there for Christmas (and with one of our twins having cat and dog allergies, it’s not a nice visit for them!)

I’ll get used to it be a quiet day with just the 4 of us and not being worth cooking a traditional Christmas dinner it’s just a shame my kids will never experience the christmases I had as a child where there were so many people to fit in for dinner that the youngest sat on a step stool step with their plate on the top of the stool and there was a table in the hall as well as the dining room!!

I love the Christmas turkey roast, with chestnut stuffing, and I always cook a ham to have on boxing day with leftover turkey, stuffing, salad and jacket potatoes. We have fish pie on Christmas Eve, and I love to make a lemon cheesecake to have after the turkey. The chocolates and nibbles are lovely as well, but I prefer the main event.

TeaMistress · 03/11/2023 19:16

It will be a very small quiet Christmas for us. Just me and my Mum and our beloved felines. We will have a proper Christmas lunch and a glass of something sparkly. We just need to buy a small fresh turkey crown at some point in December and all the trimmings.

Christmas cake
Iced mince pie
Roast potatoes and gravy
Parmesan and bacon sprouts
Trifle (no sherry)

I love an iced mince pie! And trifle is my DS's favourite - we always have it on Boxing Day.

Loads of cheese and biscuits, especially Brie. Loads and loads of Brie with different chutneys. Not food, but love mulled wine too.

Brie with cranberry sauce is my favourite!

Where to start?! Another vote for nutroast from a non veggie - DM makes one with chestnut stuffing & red wine sauce which is to die for!
I find turkey a bit boring but love all the trimmings & roast veg.
Homemade bread sauce ( BBC Good Food has a really easy recipe & it’s delicious)
DM’s St Stephens pudding which is citrus based & a lighter alternative to Christmas pud.
Dundee cake
Cold roast spuds with double Gloucester & chive cheese - discovered by accident & an absolute taste sensation!
Smoked salmon & creamcheese bagels
Posh chocolates.
M & S biscuits which are really thickly coated in chocolate
Aldi stollen bites - DF had to stop buying them as he was becoming addicted!

The highlights of my Christmas feeding are:

  • Our signature turkey casserole made from the leftovers of Christmas roast dinner
  • Panettone in various forms
  • Morning coffee with Bailey's added
  • Evening mulled wine

Bailey's coffee - yes!

Newberry Fruits.
They're only made twice a year in a factory in Poland. My Dad loved them so I buy them up when I see them 🙂

Wolvesart · 03/11/2023 19:32

Lebkuchen 💕

FloweryFlump · 03/11/2023 19:34

I absolutely love mince pies! I have to steel myself not to buy any until December 1st because otherwise I'd be eating them from now until February!

Why is it that if you don't buy them super early you can't get hold of them?!

I get a big posh chicken and do extra fancy stuffing with smoked bacon and shallots, lots of roast veg. Sometimes add Yorkshires as they go down well.
I always manage to dry out turkey so I don’t bother anymore.

Fridge cake - usually have to make a couple as DS1 can inhale them.

Stollen (I’m the only one that likes it, all the more for me).
