Board games for 15 yo?

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 21/10/2023 21:31

We always get a new board or card game at Christmas - any suggestions for ones a 15 year old would enjoy? Needs to work with 3 players. We already have and enjoyed

Ticket to ride
Carcassonne
Pandemic
5 second rule
Monopoly
Five second rule
Throw throw burrito
Exploding kittens

Any suggestions for this year?

Look at catan and risk
Rummicub is also very good 👍🏻

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 21/10/2023 21:48

Thanks @Landlubber2019 I don't love Risk, but I will have a look at the other two!

My 15 year old asked for "King of Tokyo" for his birthday, but I have never played it with him.

LeanIntoChaos · 21/10/2023 21:53

Second catan! Definitely fits with the selection you've already got. I also think takenoko is a similar level!

Pradder · 21/10/2023 21:53

Catan is great.
Love letters is a nice easy card game.
Dominion is a favourite of mine.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 21/10/2023 21:54

Not quite a board game but the one my DS has had the most use from is a poker set.

EasterMummie · 21/10/2023 21:54

I can't believe you don't already have Catan on your list. It fits perfectly with the other games you have, you'll be hooked!

beancounting · 21/10/2023 21:58

Another vote for Catan, and also Snakesss is good fun

Tinkhasflown · 21/10/2023 22:31

Rummikub!

MotherOfCrocodiles · 21/10/2023 22:48

Settlers of Catan for sure.

Also it works best with 3 players (though you can have 4)

GettingStuffed · 21/10/2023 23:14

Labyrinth, it's for all ages, it can get complicated if you're playing all adults

HelpNeededBeforeIHaveABreakdown · 21/10/2023 23:49

Azul

Digimoor · 21/10/2023 23:52

Quirkle

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 22/10/2023 05:29

Codenames is fun

YireosDodeAver · 22/10/2023 05:44

Our teen enjoys:
Puerto Rico
Istanbul
Azul
Oceans
Powergrid
Splendor (available in "normal" and also in "marvel comics superhero" versions if your teen likes mcu stuff)
Ark Nova
Terraforming Mars - also available in several versions, the Dice Game version is our teen's favourite

GrandHighPoohbah · 22/10/2023 06:01

Forbidden Island. There is also a desert and space version.

Philandbill · 22/10/2023 06:10

My teens love Rummicub. Excellent mix of luck and skill so it's not the same person winning every time. Great for three players and a game lasts for 20-30 minutes.

GoodVibesHere · 22/10/2023 06:24

Jaipur is a good card game

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 22/10/2023 13:47

Great suggestions, thanks everyone. We do have forbidden island and labyrinth already, I'd forgotten about those! I think we'll go for Catan and Rummikub this year.

Chameleon is great for that age.

CocoPlum · 22/10/2023 14:01

I would advise not Forbidden Island (fun but too similar to Pandemic) or Jaipur (great game but is for 2 players only).

Mysterium, Camel Up, Jaws would all be good but my top pick would be Pan Am. Although if you've enjoyed Pandemic and TTR, there are legacy versions of both - TTR not out yet but the Pandemic ones have been wild rides!

YoDood · 22/10/2023 14:38

In order of increasing complexity I’d recommend:

Galaxy Trucker (https://www.board-game.co.uk/product/galaxy-trucker-2021/) - chaotic tile builder, but loads of fun.

Lords of Waterdeep (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wizards-Coast-5513165-Waterdeep-Dungeons/dp/0786959916?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE) great, and not overly complex, worker placement game. It has a D&D setting but is very much a thinky resource management game rather than rolling dice and fighting.

Race for the Galaxy (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rio-Grande-Games-Race-Galaxy/dp/B07J9TDZXL) - really highly regarded card game, runs 30-60 mins.

Clank Catacombs (https://www.board-game.co.uk/product/clank-catacombs/?campaign=pmax23&gad=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwkNOpBhBEEiwAb3MvvUmhXs5oUKEzjUynsNed0tm4KYKLkgHCXjLk1i-OMpSLMt28jDdA-xoC97EQAvD_BwE) is a fantastically fun deck-builder in which you’re on a mission to explore a dungeon without waking the dragon - both my boys love it.

Scythe (https://www.board-game.co.uk/product/scythe/?campaign=pmax23&gad=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwkNOpBhBEEiwAb3MvvaGFZbFhP2-d47_f0n6E-w2Gg32vr3yznJFX1Ce4UjuS-Xk2gLuEkhoCOMcQAvD_BwE) is good but more complex engine builder.

I realise that I’ve picked mainly sci-fi/fantasy themes which was a bit limited of me. Actually my 14 year old’s absolute favourites are totally outside this category. He loves:

Calico (https://www.board-game.co.uk/product/calico/) surprisingly brain burning tile-layer about piecing together tiles to make a quilt in patterns which cats will find so attractive they will come to sit on it (!)

So Clover (https://www.board-game.co.uk/product/so-clover/?srsltid=AfmBOorDdw9NgZH3pkKSXWjN8bvyeKCye5VKiygo93Aj8rKCeodSsL98Ay8) a fun word-based party game. Universally accessible - great for Christmas etc.

Catan is great. We also like Agricola and love Puerto Rico- in fact, my under 10's play Catan well, so Peurto Rico would be top of the list for a 15 year old.
