All sorted for our 4 year old but I'm really struggling for ideas for our 8 year old son this year. He has already pretty much grown out of playing with actual toys, but then is still young enough that you can see he is a bit envious when his younger brother gets all the shiny plastic stuff to open. Family have mostly moved to giving him money now so that makes the disparity even more apparent really. So far he has asked for a switch game, a skateboard and a set of percy jackson books but hasn't come up with anything else so I'm hoping I can steal ideas from other people's lists this year!

my 9 year old is at the same stage, doesn’t really play with many toys (unless he’s playing with his younger sibling). He’s mentioned that he wants FC24 for the switch, match attax cards and some football heroes books for his collection. He loves the “unveiling” factor of treasure x so I’ve got him a few smaller sets from the new range. Pretty stuck for him though.

FLOWER1982 · 19/10/2023 13:23

Lego, football and hoodie.

MouseKeys · 19/10/2023 13:29

My go-to gifts for 8-10 year old boys this year are Lego’s, Bakugans, Nerf guns, Goo-jitzus, jigsaw puzzles and drawing pens and pads.

Forgottenmyphone · 19/10/2023 13:31

Simon Air
Magic trick set
T shirt from Illuminated Apparel
Gravitrax expansion set
Yoda oversized hoodie

I’m waiting for Black Friday to get a science/chemistry set. Grandparents are getting him Pokémon labyrinth game

Topbird29 · 19/10/2023 13:42

Have 2 boys - 11DS and 9DS. Both want minecraft lego sets, both into bakugan - think they just like collecting them rather than playing the game properly. Youngest also getting a cyborg hand - set you build from smyths toys. Both getting a gaming seat and headphones. Last year got snuggly hoodies with among us on (primark). Youngest also didn't want toys as such - but likes nerf stuff, and got him a laser shooting game - you shoot moving targets projected on the wall - think it is called project x or similar. A few books - has been reading percy jackson, artemisia fowl but also finds dog man and bunny vs monkey silly and funny. And read all Harry Potter books. He falls for adverts, so wanted a cat vs pickles plush too.

Topbird29 · 19/10/2023 13:44

And gravitrax was a hit from grandparents- especially as he hadn't asked for it, so was a complete surprise for him!

FKATondelayo · 19/10/2023 13:45

My 9yo wants a typewriter and a walkman (?). He's obviously having a retro moment. He also likes oodies, cuddly toys, playstation vouchers and board games.

A switch game, a skateboard and a set of percy jackson books sound like a great set of gifts to me.

sthonore · 19/10/2023 13:49

My 9 year old has asked for a plasma ball, Mario wonders game and a rollercoaster engineering set from Wicked Uncle.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 19/10/2023 13:49

DS is 12 now. Over the last 4 years he has loved.

walkie talkies
metal detector
Hornby train
Lego
Modelling clay
electric guitar (this has really taken off and he plays very well now)
drum kit
oodie
slipper socks
rock tumbler
badge maker
nerf guns
multI tool.
pokemon cards

evtheria · 19/10/2023 13:50

Those requests sound good! If you have a sports centre near you maybe a voucher for a skateboarding session would go well...? In Greater Mcr we have the Graystone Action centre, it's brilliant.

DS9 is getting:
• a retired Lego set he has wanted for a few years now. Had to find it 2nd hand off eBay.
• a MinaLima Harry Potter book
• fluffy onesie of his preferred football team
• couple of board games
• 2 switch lite games
• national book token
• ticket to a tour of football stadium (I've bought one for DP as well)

Justoveranhour · 19/10/2023 13:53

My 9 year old is a particular child(!)- only wants Pokémon cards and designer makeup-

but my nephews around that age like nerf guns, switch games, cards against humanity (the children’s version), football cards and football strips.

Thecomfortador · 19/10/2023 14:37

My nearly 8year old has asked for a VCR (no chance), a record player (probably not but better than an old video player), pop corn machine and knitting craft stuff (??) amongst other things I can't remember. I've ordered an Oodie for each of mine, that will be their main thing from me. I'd love to get him some headphones but it worries me that it would be so quiet we'd forget about him and he'd end up with hearing loss. At least if I can hear it I can ask him to turn it down.

Coldinscotland · 19/10/2023 14:43

Ds9 has asked for a new bike... Apparently the cycling proficiency teacher said his was too small. I did suggests he give the man my bank details for the money...

DidntHaveTheLatin · 19/10/2023 14:43

My 10-yr old is also quite particular, @Justoveranhour - Cards Against Humanity will be perfect for him, thank you! Other than games like that, he's generally only interested in Lego and books, and he has more Lego than I've had hot dinners so I do try to keep that to a reasonable minimum 😳

He has a simple stepcounter watch which he's quite pleased with, and isn't remotely interested in clothes. I did wonder about a lava lamp - he would like that kind of thing at nighttime. He has an Echo Dot in his room so doesn't really need more music options. I did see Cheaters Monopoly recommended by someone a here a few weeks back so have bought that as a general family present.

Actually if anyone has any good art supply recs, that would be good? He has loads of watercolour pencil crayons but some good drawing pens would be popular I think.

anormalperson · 19/10/2023 14:44

Football shirts
Lego

Longwhiskers · 19/10/2023 14:51

Same boat. Just turned nine and a hit this year and last etc

slackline you put between trees, good for walks in the woods
hammock
magic 8 ball
magnetic dartboard
games / just got headbanz and that’s a fun family game as is the sock game, a hit from Xmas last year
pocket microscope
klask - massive hit, it’s like a kind of magnetic game where you move your player around to score goals, hard to explain but all ages like it
hes been given a build it yourself spiral drawing kit and that looks fun
a kind of Rubik’s cube called a Gan speed cube
books!

DidntHaveTheLatin · 19/10/2023 14:55

@Longwhiskers can you please tell me which slackline you got? Was it the Ninjaline one?

nickievans1987 · 19/10/2023 14:57

Thanks so much for all the ideas. I feel like I now have something to work with! Though more ideas always welcome so keep them coming!

Longwhiskers · 19/10/2023 15:19

@DidntHaveTheLatin the brand is called trailblaze. You can get it on amazon

also a past hit - fancy marshmallow roasting s’mores kit thing which comes with a Burner for toasting

NegativeCreeep · 19/10/2023 15:51

Metal Detector, Perplexus, Treasure X, Bakugan, new Walkie Talkies, Pirate Dig kit, Fugglers (I think he’d happily have just Fugglers TBH 🙄). He also really wanted an extendable back scratcher and a spud gun (will be in his stocking).

ThelmaBorden · 19/10/2023 16:32

will be 10 mid November - here is his definitive list so far -

Swiss Army knife (basic one)
metal detector (from grandparents, so they can go off together seeking treasure)
Mr Potato Head?!
his own ‘old fashioned’ box of chocolates
Davy Crockett hat
lava lamp
guinea pigs (two)
books
Gruffalo slippers

DresdenDoll · 19/10/2023 17:02

DS10 has asked for an electric guitar, nerf gun, grow your own crystal set, wood whittling knife and some clay.

DD is really hard, she turns 8 just before Christmas, and she hasn't asked for much so everything she has asked for we've got for her birthday. She loves making things and can follow quite complex instructions so I think we might go for the cyborg hand mentioned upthread, and lego chess.

As stocking fillers they'll both be getting:
Bath bombs
Shower gel
Bubble tea kits
Slushie cups
Books
Slinkies
Pokemon cards
Crystals
Card games (Zuuli and Sushi Go, I think)

Someone else asked about art supplies...

This 3D pen is awesome

Acrylic paint pens are so vibrant, especially on black paper.

And there's a book called Learn to Draw Cool Stuff, by Elizabeth H Taylor, that's been brilliant for both my DC, especially learning to shade effectively.

Big hits over the last couple of years have been:
Roller skates
Keyboard
3D pen
Gravitrax
Table top pool table
Table top air hockey
Giant jenga

Sorry that was so long - but hopefully some ideas for you there!

I'm also looking for some decent junior headphones with some sort of volume control.
It seems to be either cute and colourful headphones for toddlers, or the full adult-type, no vol limit, with a microphone (I don't want this).

NegativeCreeep · 19/10/2023 20:10

@DresdenDoll excellent suggestions. I am definitely getting DD9 the art book. That would be her dream!

Favouritefruits · 19/10/2023 20:24

Treasure X
lego dreamz
x rocker
switch games
turtle lair
’fun’ clothes
