What same gift could I get everybody at Christmas? A la Nessa in Gavin and Stacey...

So tired at the thought of stress and expense of buying gifts for everyone this year. I know I sound like a tight arse... but wondering what everyone would be a good idea for everyone? I'll buy the DC something more obvs but my parents, sister, nieces, nephew, best friend... I thought of one of those custom stamps with the person's face on? Any other ideas welcome!

Nessa also got everyone a celebration chocolate each in the first Christmas Special 😂

I second secret Santa - I’m one of 4 siblings, all with partners, so we just do a secret Santa. Miles cheaper and everyone gets something nice.

GoogleWhacked · 10/09/2023 20:51

Buy a box of Celebrations and divvy them up between everyone, then it's a nice surprise as to which one each person got 🤣

As I currently have a broken bathroom sink tap and have to wash my hands in the bath, I'd love a tap 🚰😁

There is a section on this in my favourite ever Christmas book, The Perfect Christmas, published in 1932. Have taken a photo of the relevant page, hope it is readable!

Love this.

Fancy bookmark

@Loafbeginsat60 How do I get to be on your list? I'd love to have these.

DP would hate it though Grin

The gift of secret Santa for your family

for your best friend suggest that instead of exchanging gifts you go out together for Xmas drinks or dessert or whatever and sone quality time

Rainbowshit · 10/09/2023 21:01

I once bought my whole family lightsabers for Christmas. Was very funny.

Honestly I'd just buy them each a lottery scratch card.

justasmalltownmum · 10/09/2023 21:04

Crocs! All the same colour with one different pin for each family member depending on their interests/ your relationship with them.

My Gran once gave everybody a fiver and a toblerone

Great choice, who wouldn’t want to receive this?

Vegans 😂

If it was replaced with a vegan chocolate bar I'd be chuffed though!

Again, I don't think @BlurpBlorp is thinking of this kind of budget. It's for little 'stocking filler' type gifts for people other than her children. (And very sensible she is thinking about doing this!)

Edited

Clearly not based on the price of stamp my face.

ColeslawSandwich · 10/09/2023 21:14

@Marsyas i love that! A pineapple for everyone is a great suggestion 😆

FoodFann · 10/09/2023 21:15

A donation in their name to the New York City ballet? (Friends fans!)

Very tricky to get one thing everyone would like. I wouldn’t appreciate any of the suggestions above to be honest, particularly a cupcake subscription, pyjamas, stamps with my face on (?!). And definitely no tat like mugs, candles or socks!

Books are tricky, as they’re v personal. My friend loved ‘the boy, the mole, the fox and the horse’ and bought it me for Xmas, but I thought it was utterly bizarre.

Are you crafty? Maybe you could make something, jam? Or how about board games? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Els1e · 10/09/2023 21:25

Wellington boots. Always useful 😁

mathanxiety · 10/09/2023 21:48

Candles from some place like TKMaxx, Starbucks gift cards...

mathanxiety · 10/09/2023 21:49

But yes, secret Santa for the kids only would be a far better idea.

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 10/09/2023 22:12

I mean, a fiver and a Toblerone is great! 🍫💸

Beautiful3 · 10/09/2023 22:12

Scratch card and home made cookies/gingerbread men would be awesome.

FusionChefGeoff · 10/09/2023 22:13

It's the thought that counts... and seeing as you are understandably having to opt out of thinking, it's definitely time to suggest Secret Santa for adults!!

One person to buy for brings the magic back and you can actually get something thoughtful.

This is great thanks @Marsyas ! And thank you to everyone, some brilliant suggestions. The Toblerone (or other suitable delectable alternative) and £5 is sounding more and more perfect!

Yes the stamps are ridiculously expensive for what they are. Might just be a DC gift. And my mum would just refuse to do a secret santa as she likes to buy things for everyone individually bless her. I am crafty but think some people wouldn't really get it...

Nonetheless, great ideas here and I can feel the potential stress draining away already. I might take myself for a christmassy walk and mulled wine in the time I'd usually be sweating about the perfect gift.

No idea what I’d do with a stamp of my face, but cash, chocolate, a reusable water bottle or coffee cup, or iced coffee cup, or books would be great.
Surely most people like a bit of Stationary or Vouchers.
or what about a mini hamper, you could still get everyone the same, some nice jams, pasta whatever. Or You could make a ‘kit’ like a baking kit, a pizza kit or something like that with everything they need for dinner one night.
Socks can be personalised if you’re keen to go down that route.
but I’d get something useful like those things if I was going to get everyone the same I think.

or you could do secret Santa, but all buy individually for your mum. 2 gifts is still better than loads!

NotMeNoNo · 11/09/2023 17:44

One year we were in the middle of renovations and we bought everyone a big jar of sweets from Mr Sims. A bit customized for recipients ie nostalgic ones for older people and more luxury ones for SIL/ jelly beans etc for teens. Giant one for whole families. It was brilliant it would just be weird to repeat it.

housethatbuiltme · 11/09/2023 18:24

The ENTIRE point of a gift is the thought behind it... if you remove that you might aswell not bother with any gift.

Gift while standard at things like xmas aren't actually required in most cases (unless your a parent or partner, then by a gift... should likely get your parental figure one too if they where good to you). No one 'needs' to buy their 13 and a half nieces and nephews and 27 cousins and thats wierd uncle you only see once a year who says wildly inappropriate things to you gifts.

A gift without thought (especially an obvious one like this) is just passive aggressive warfare though lol, it pointedly says I'm making a big open statement of not caring about any of you.

Hibernatalie · 11/09/2023 18:28

Last year we bought most people scratch cards lolGrin
