Desperately in need of ideas for DD 8

Finally agreed with EXH the Christmas schedule with the kids and it got DD(8) and DS(3) asking if Santa would still come if they're at Daddy's house and not at home. All good, reassured them that in special cases he can deliver twice as I'm hyper aware it's probably one of the last years of DD believing.

Which leads me onto planning their gifts. DS is easy; if it's Spiderman, paw patrol or anything vehicle based he's happy as Larry. But DD doesn't particularly want or need anything. She's still got her Barbie dreamhouse and all the associated kit but seems to not be playing with toys as much, preferring to do crafts, write stories and practice her gymnastics.

So... what are you getting your 7/8/9 yr old girls this year? Please help give me some inspiration!

A gymnastics mat and/or beam that goes on the floor. I got my daughter a mat that she used loads.

My kids are all grown up but I remember when the youngest 2 were around your dd's age roller blades went down a treat. For months afterwards they went to the local roller disco on a saturday afternoon with all the other kids. Great for keeping them active and social.

Crumbcatcher · 31/08/2023 15:10

Leotard and matching scrunchie!

BarbiesWorld · 31/08/2023 15:16

A gym mat and beam would be amazing but we don't really have the space and, if I'm honest, I can imagine the borderline feral DS launching himself off any kind of equipment and us spending the day in a&e!

@Wherethewildthymeblows rollerblades are a great idea! We've actually got a roller rink fairly close by too 😊

Mine loves squishmallows. She also got her ears pierced for Christmas last year. Bath bomb kits and tye dying have also been big hits.

I got my dd a box and filled it with loads of new craft bits try the range they have loads of cheap craft bits and that's what my dd has asked for again this year aswell x

Mine will be just turned 9 this Christmas. Last year she got roller skates, a new helmet, and some Barbie stuff which she barely played with tbh, so shouldn't have bothered with those! The skates are going strong (buy knee and elbow hads and hand and wrist guards if she doesn't have them already 😬 - they've saved dd from injury a few times)!

Mystro202 · 31/08/2023 16:25

My dd sounds exactly like yours! Gymnastics - mad & loves crafts. Doesn't play much with toys anymore. I plan on getting her some gymnastics equipment so that she can practice at home. I think they will have to go outside though due to lack of space in the house so I'm not sure if they will last too long.

We've bought our dgd (7 1/2 at Christmas) a joint family gift of a trip to the Harry potter studio in London and a griffindor hoodie. Are there any events, theatre tickets or places you could book that your dd would like to do/go to? I know that dd and sil have bought her roller blades (she had a new scooter last year) and a trolley from IKEA they are filling with art supplies (posca pens, canvases etc). And an alexa controlled colour light bulb for her bedroom. She got an alexa owl dot for her birthday which has been a big hit so they thought the light bulb would be a good add on. They're also buying her a new purse and putting a few gift cards in there for her favourite places which they'll buy closer to the time. We've sat in the garden whispering about Christmas this evening!

My eldest GC is coming up to nine. She still uses the light up tracer. We got the acrylic paint pens and the proper paper to go with it. Smiggle outline pens etc. She was very into Baby Yoda/Stitch, so got themed stuff. Resin craft sets and stuff to just take art/crafts to a higher level. As said Squishmallows. She likes lush and pamper sets. Any toys have been a waste of money. Roblox vouchers, don't buy cheap, go better on hobby stuff. Although the set of graded pencils from B&M are good value.

BarbiesWorld · 01/09/2023 09:30

It looks like rollerblades (and the knee pads!) could be a big contender 😊would absolutely love to get gymnastics equipment but am really conscious that we don't really have the space for it.

I think I might need to adjust my thinking on how i do her gifts this year as up until now there's always been a 'main' showstopper type present. Maybe by getting one of those giant squishmallows and doing thinks like grouping the craft/art supplies together in big boxes it won't be as noticable.

Thank you so much guys

Dd1 will be 7.5 at Xmas, I've not brought anything yet but am keeping a list of ideas

So far my last has on it:

  • lego set - I assume this will be the main thing she asks for so will just wait to see which one she wants the most nearer the time
  • globe - not sure if to get a simple standard one or an interactive one as a joint gift with dd2(5)
  • chess set
  • rubix cube
  • fun Lockets Secret Journal- both dds want one after seeing the adverts
  • melissa and doug secret message decoder
  • puppets their Puppet Theatre
  • tamagotchi - the classic 90s style one

She also mentioned sylvanuan family reindeer family earlier but she goes through phases with playing with them so will wait and see nearer the time

Are there any artists or bands she likes? Any favorite characters? You can go from there and get her clothes with them or plushies, maybe something to decorate her room with, like a calendar poster or a big framed collage of her favorite characters' pictures and quotes, etc.

kenadams86 · 02/09/2023 07:25

I'm finding my DD7 tricky this year too.
She said Barbies but doesn't know what else she wants.

I will stick up on the usual socks pants PJs
Maybe some converse trainers
Hair supplies
Bath bombs

But I will be looking forward to reading more toy related ideas here

BarbiesWorld · 02/09/2023 07:57

Funny enough, I've got something similar on the list for DS, fully expecting that she'll get in on the action and they can have a lovely couple of hours playing/fighting together.

You can get foldable gymnastics beams/mats etc.

I guess everyone is different but my 3 year old got a lite bright board, my 7 year old wouldn’t want that.

DresdenDoll · 02/09/2023 08:17

My DD will be 8 soon and recently presented me with her birthday wishlist:

Go Ape voucher
Hoverboard
Robo Alive frilled lizard
Rubiks mega gift set
Brain box animals
Bug box with magnifying glass etc
Katherine Rundell books
Lush bath bombs

ChristmasJumperz · 03/09/2023 22:40

My 8yr old dd has asked for some Simbrix after seeing the advert. They're like a cross between lego and hamabeads. They look really good for crafty kids
