Now these were real selection boxes

Just seen this picture on FB and had to post. These were the selection boxes of my day, better than the crappy ones available these days.

Every year we’d get a selection box/stocking each, a big jar or Quality Streets and Roses for the family and a box of the sugary orange and lemon slices. They lasted us ages, well it felt like it anyway.

Who else remembers these?

Mingles were vile As was the lime Weekend chocolate i remember trying it as a very young child and i remember it to this day, thats how rank it was. Same when i remember trying a date from my dads box of them as Christmas when i was eight Yuk

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 21/08/2023 16:20

Anyone remember Fry’s Five Centres? I used to love that. Nibbling off the chocolate and seeing the different colours of fruit cream.

Also when I was super young Dairy Milk made a bar of chocolate which was like individual chocolates but all joined together. Fascinated me and it was a very rare treat

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 21/08/2023 16:27

Sorry I meant it was Milk Tray that did the chocolate bar

ChessieFL · 21/08/2023 16:32

Selection boxes also used to consist of full size bars, whereas nowadays the bars are a sort of halfway size between full size and fun size. The size you get in multipacks.

Habreathmint · 21/08/2023 16:36

Oh rip Topic..gutted. I remember all of these with great fondness. Cabanas, Treets, Counters, Bitz bars, Secret, Biarritz, Texan bars and the magnificent Banjo (blue milk choc, red dark). I miss those days.

Habreathmint · 21/08/2023 16:37

Oh and Golden Cups and chewy Texan bars...

Beaverbridge · 21/08/2023 17:04

Golden Cups, why did they stop making those?. Devine.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 21/08/2023 17:07

Selection boxes were a real favourite and much looked forward to. Now, the chocolate is appalling and the bars require a microscope to find in the oversized packaging!

Oh Lord, I not THAT old am I??? 3d...... 1p in this new fangled currency😅

I raise you Motoring Chocolate (actually fruit and nut). We had a grocer's van come round every week and DM would buy (among other things) bottles of Corona and above mentioned choc. We were only allowed sweets on Wednesday, which might have been the day the van came round

Used to love those selections stockings at Christmas.

Those selection stockings are so evocative.

I also loved the liqueur chocs in the shape of a bottle and something I think was called Edinburgh rock? A sort of fruit flavoured chalk type sweet.

Edinburgh rock was foul. Used to use it to chalk hopscotch grids on the pavement. No-one in their right mind ate that.

I love Edinburgh rock especially the ginger flavour.

Anyone remember Terrys Nutcracker and Terrys Moments? Lovely

DH loved those bars of Peanut Cracknel

Coconut Ice Yuk

Mid 60s we moved to London to live with DGPs after DF died. Every Friday I'd walk to the end of the road to meet DGF coming home from work so we could have a chat and I could see what goodies he'd brought us, like bags of peanut cracknel and big Cadbury's bars.

KomodoDodo · 21/08/2023 17:34

You can still get frys 5 centres. Ive seen them recently.

Meadowflower2023 · 21/08/2023 17:48

@Callipygion my Aunt knows how I loved those coffee creams from years back and got me a load of the Fry's coffee creme bars from B&M last week. I'd never seen them before! Needless to say they are very similar and utterly divine, so much so I've had to go and get a stack more. £1.25 for 3, cheap at twice the price!

MissMarplesNiece · 21/08/2023 17:53

Tins of toffees with pretty pictures on the lids. I used to get one every year at Christmas. Sometimes I see the empty tins for sale at vintage fairs.

Oh flaming heck, in B&M?! I’m going tomorrow! Thanks for the tip!

I saw that on fb too! Pure nostalgia! Nothing tastes the same anymore and opal fruits should have always stayed opal fruits, starburst indeed!! I'd forgotten all about those fruit jellies we used to have them at Christmas.

I loved New Berry fruits. Like a liqueur chocolate, with a sugary centre filled with fruit flavoured liquid. The so-called New Berry Jewels that they sell now are nothing like them; they say it's a liquid centre, but it's just a softer jelly.

Oh the old days 😊

I loved weekend chocolates! I’m sure I remember them in a tall box with three individual drawers that you pulled out to reveal the beautiful chocolates!

LadyVictoriaSponge · 21/08/2023 18:18

This was my favourite as a child, it was huge! and great value for money compared to other chocolate bars.

Fry’s used to be lovely, they had a proper fondant centre, now it’s like flavoured wallpaper paste.

SM4713 · 21/08/2023 18:21

I could never forget those stockings with the chocolates in them. We were living abroad and mum packed them for my brother and I. Come Christmas, we were happily munching the maltesers.

I decided to chew one in half, to see what was in the middle of a Malteser. It was hollowed out and had a weevil type bug inside. They were in ALL of them, so presumably all the ones we'd eaten too 😱

Enoughnowbrandon · 21/08/2023 18:28

Why did they ruin chocolate? Easter eggs are rubbish now.😪

Yes to Nutcracker and now I've looked online I do remember Terrys Moments

I probably had the Peanut Cracknell but I loved Mint Cracknell

Love Coconut Ice but not Turkish Delight (the stuff covered in chocolate . The real Turkish Delight is a delight Grin )

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/08/2023 18:47

Does anyone else remember when Bornville chocolate bars had 2 very thin layers ,cannot recall if they were wrapped individually ? Gold foil.

And when you got a box of chocolates if they were underwight they topped it up with a tiny rectangle of chocolate hidden under one of the others .-which of course my DSis would claim.
