Now these were real selection boxes

Just seen this picture on FB and had to post. These were the selection boxes of my day, better than the crappy ones available these days.

Every year we’d get a selection box/stocking each, a big jar or Quality Streets and Roses for the family and a box of the sugary orange and lemon slices. They lasted us ages, well it felt like it anyway.

Who else remembers these?

There was something so magical about the stocking ones with the netting, such a treat.

What has a hazelnut in every bite ?
Squirrels;' droppings Grin

We were easily pleased back then !

I remember getting one of these every Christmas. My dad told us very sternly that one of his friends broke his tooth on a crunchie bar as a kid so we were not allowed to eat them. I never tried one until I was 30 in fear of breaking a tooth.

They were his favourite 😂 the silly sod told us that one year as a joke, but the following year we all just handed them over without him saying anything so he went with it 😂

Plainandsimple · 20/08/2023 20:31

There is a mystery bar that only I seem to remember - it was a rounded shape (think like a tube of Smarties) wrapped in dark brown cellophane, and the centre was kind of fudgy, coated in thick toffee and then coated with peanuts - I used to eat it by picking all the peanuts off first, then biting into it! Anyone else remember it?

Oh the old days 😊

I begged and begged for that selection box for my 6th birthday as it looked so nice in the pictures. What a let down when my birthday came - so much crystallised fruit yuckiness 😡

Nothing tastes the same any more 😔

Parmalat violets do...revolting!

I wasn't allowed selection boxes. As a teacher my dad used to be given loads so he'd open them and share them with me & my sister.

chosenone · 20/08/2023 20:49

Oh I miss these 😩 loved the stocking shaped ones!

Also the big tins of chocolates Roses and Qualkty Street unbelievably amazing compared to the shite they churn out now!!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

That was a Nutty Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/08/2023 20:55

I remember those Week-end chocolates
The only ones DSis and I would eat was the one in the red paper (solid chocolate with tiny nut bits) and the two chocp;ate covered nuts .
Otherwise nope !

AlwaysGinPlease · 20/08/2023 20:57

@FutureThroughLensOfThePast oh no! 😂

Plainandsimple · 20/08/2023 21:01

Oh my god @70isaLimitNotaTarget that’s it - ‘Rowntrees Nutty, peanut, caramel and fudge’ !! Thank you, no one else remembers them and I sometimes think I’ve imagined it! Could just eat one right now!

Gatekeeper · 20/08/2023 21:02

I bloody loved Texan Bar..
You coould stretch them arms length and were responsible for everyone of my fillings Grin

Tulipvase · 20/08/2023 21:07

Those selection stockings are so evocative.

I also loved the liqueur chocs in the shape of a bottle and something I think was called Edinburgh rock? A sort of fruit flavoured chalk type sweet.

Razberryberet · 20/08/2023 21:10

I saw that on fb too! Pure nostalgia! Nothing tastes the same anymore and opal fruits should have always stayed opal fruits, starburst indeed!! I'd forgotten all about those fruit jellies we used to have them at Christmas.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/08/2023 21:29

Matchmakers:

Used to be in a long thin box that the inside bit slid out . They were thinner than they are now and about the size of a match .
Not like the current ones that started as Extra Long then took over and booted the small ones out into the confectionary wilderness .

Orange
Mint
Coffee (which were the nicest)

Or there was a mixed / 3 flavours but I think only at Christmas

(None of your Gingerbread/Homeycomb/Salted Caramel -and I hope I dreamed this ....Lemon)

AristideBeauvoir · 20/08/2023 17:16

Yes, bring back Opal Fruits, ditch the daft Starburst label. And while I'm on why ever did anyone think that Snickers (meaningless cross between sniggers and knickers) was better than the superbly named Marathon with all the implication of energy-giving, long-lasting iconic deliciousness!

Ruined DHs favourite joke

"I entered a marathon once
My knob was covered in peanuts"

Sorry

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 20/08/2023 17:57

Ah, such a lovely blast from the past!

But where are the Spangles?

Ohhhh
I LOVED spangles

Ohmylovejune · 20/08/2023 22:14

My Nans house had York fruits on the side, always!

Bubblegum20 · 20/08/2023 22:19

Going back only a few years you used to be able to get a tin of Mingles too, they were one of my favourites

Charrington · 21/08/2023 06:20

I am salivating looking at those photos. What I wouldn’t give to taste real chocolate again!
What a strange dystopia we ended up in!

AgnesX · 21/08/2023 07:24

Elizabethwalton · 20/08/2023 20:39

Parma.

😁 I'd forgotten about those!

AlwaysGinPlease · 20/08/2023 18:51

Oh the old days 😊

Those Weekend chocolate/sweet selection weren’t at all popular in our house!

Does anyone remember Mingles?
or Mint Cracknell (I can still remember a bit of the advertising song for it)
or Terry’s Wafer (available in milk or dark chocolate) they were gorgeous!
