This year I’m patting myself on the back - almost all Christmas food has been eaten and it’s the last day of the holidays.

Leftovers as of today:
A sliver of Red Leicester
A big chunk of Gouda
An unopened Brie
A box of crackers
A few Bendicks bitter mints

It will all be eaten in the next 1-2 days, except the Gouda no one wants - I’ll chop it and put it out for the blackbirds.

I’m counting this as zero waste 😊

What helped massively was hosting a little neighbours’ get together on the 28th (hot drinks and all uneaten sweet stuff laid out) - worked like a charm.

Our xmas pud had bb date of June 2021 - had it xmas day, it was delicious!! Sainsbury's TTD Hidden Cherry Centre Christmas Pudding.

I've got a fruitcake from 2019, I made six, this is the last one. Wrapped each in baking paper then tinfoil, unwrap once a month and feed more brandy then rewrap and back into tin in understairs cupboard. Fabulous! Mrs Beetons recipe, one slice will put you over the driving limit!

I totally agree regarding best before dates but didn't want to upset Mumsnetters who throw perfectly good food away because it's reached an arbitrary date (mainly used in stores for stock rotation) 😁

No, still have -

Mince pies
Stollen
4 Ferrero Rocher
Half a Christmas cake
Honey roast peanuts

will buy far less next year!

I hate threads like this because I am now about to have a warm mice pie with some Baileys extra thick cream and I would not have done so, and all because of this thread
So thanks from my ever expanding waistline to all who posted🙎

We have a cat on the thread 😸

RedToothBrush · 04/01/2023 18:32

Ooo I properly fancy a Bailey's now....

mastertomsmum · 04/01/2023 22:12

Why not savour stuff over a few months - why rush at it?

GettingStuffed · 04/01/2023 22:19

No we were both ill and didn't want to eat

Howmanysleepsnow · 04/01/2023 22:21

I have…
3 pannetone, 1 of which is massive (all gifts)
10 mince pies (will have to check dates)
1 tin of quality street (forgot about it till yesterday)
1 tub of brandy butter, unopened.
1 Stilton (will use in risotto)
1 Brie and 1 smoked cheddar
1 box of crackers
2 packs of chestnuts

We’ve got a handful of chocolates left and a small hunk of cheese.

I have been really mindful this year about not over-buying and over-eating so I bought modestly.

We also had piles of family stay which helped us eat out way through our Christmas haul.

WickedSerious · 05/01/2023 17:09

We've got a mountain of chocolate and enough booze to float a battleship.

Mirabai · 05/01/2023 17:11

Some Christmas cake, 1 helping of Christmas pudding, some Mozart chocolate marzipans and some frozen parsnips.

Many of the Christmas present food and booze hasn’t been started yet.

NeedWineNow · 05/01/2023 17:53

DH has started his Metre of Jaffa Cakes - I might have to provide assistance.

mickandrorty · 06/01/2023 06:40

I've now got to the point where i have gathered it all up, open bags of crisps, nuts and half eaten chocolates, put it in a box on the side, told everyone this needs eating by this time next week or I'm binning it! Its now being eaten.

Personally at Christmas I eat whatever I want, whenever I want it, and buy indulgent food I don’t regularly keep in the pantry. It’s fine for a week or two but more than that isn’t good for me.

Also it’s better for my preschooler’s routine to get back to normal healthy eating when Christmas break is over.

I’ll be planning amounts carefully next Christmas too. It helped that I decided to buy only expensive stuff - it really reins in the greed, and makes it more special.

I've just found and devoured some malteasers which is the last of the sweet stuff. Just some cheese left which will be used up throughout Jan in normal meals.

I feel like I got the right amount this year...no real extras but enough to fulfil the need for picking on lovely bits and tasty leftovers for a couple of days after Xmas day.

AdoraBell · 06/01/2023 10:47

No. Stocked up on things DD1 likes, I do too but wouldn’t buy for myself. She had to go back to Uni city on Boxing Day. So I still have panettone and Stollen, plus mince pies. Also bought biscuits that DD2 likes, and she’s gone off them🤦‍♀️. She took other things back to Uni. Fancy cold meats and smoked salmon are in the freezer, along with sprouts. Supermarket messed up with the sprouts, I ordered 0.5 kilo and they sent 5 kilos. I offloaded about half to my neighbour, DD1 took about a kilo and the rest will be used stealthy 🥷 this month.

Essentially we are on the same page here if you think about it. We don’t eat many biscuits in this house so they last being occasional treats over a long period of time. Eating the odd biscuit isn’t really deviating from a healthy diet. Regarding pre schoolers - my 17 year old didn’t eat any chocolate until he was 5. A box of chocs bought at Christmas and with each of us eating one anytime over time, kinda follows this

7Worfs · 06/01/2023 12:39

Ah, but that level of self-control isn’t possible in our house - if it’s in the pantry, it will be picked at often and with enthusiasm.

hmm Just hoping your pre schooler isn’t allowed in the pantry 😀
