Food that is not Christmas food but that you only eat at Christmas

So not your typical Christmas pudding, mince pies etc but what other things do you only eat at Christmas? I’ve just had a double decker bar from a selection box and it was so delicious it’s made me wonder why I never buy them throughout the year, but always eat one at Christmas!

I have also spent the last few days working my way through a big bag of honey roasted cashew nuts - so good! But only really ‘allowed’ at Christmas according to the weird rules about Christmas food I seem to have made up in my head for no apparent reason Grin. Any others to add to the list?

Are most of these not indulgent treats? I don't eat them, except as indulgent treats, and I don't buy them except at Christmas. My supermarket trolley is austere.

Walnut whips and Turkish delight (but not at the same time).

keeprunning55 · 29/12/2022 20:32

Advocaat, baileys and stilton.

Florentine biscuits. I usually get them from M&S but they were greasy this year.

Surprisingly easy to make your own. Did it years ago & got a lovely authentic smell & taste from them.

Pickled onions

Gala pie, the pork pie with egg through the middle and with a jar of piccalilli.

I think pickles (onions, gherkins, etc) are much healthier as a snack, part of your 5 a day, i should eat them more often. Better than crisps or biscuits.

Branston Pickle. Any other time of the year I wouldn't bother or I'd get a lovely fig chutney type thing.

Bought an amazing Fig and Shallot chutney - Bonne Mamon range - from Waitrose

Dates & figs. IDK why, I bloody love them. I've mostly given up added sugar (including totally giving up chocolate) over the last few months, I might buy them more often.

We've had dried figs this week too, our local middle Eastern grocer does lovely pale ones, soft and delicious - not like the hard dark brown ones we've had before.

dutysuite · 29/12/2022 21:52

Mini frozen sausage rolls
Baileys
Jarred pickles - which then don’t get eaten
A good piccalilli
After Eights
Mulled wine I’ve still got a bottle from last year and this year still haven’t touched it
Sausage meat
Port
Stilton
Cranberry sauce

LemonDrizzles · 29/12/2022 21:54

Reese's peanut butter cup treat.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 29/12/2022 22:03

Turkey, sprouts, panettone, mulled wine and Baileys don’t count, as they are all official Christmas food as far as I’m concerned. They belong with the mince pies and the Christmas pud.

@Itsonlymeeee
Dying to know what dog cheese is though

Sorry, force of habit. MuttDog has a sprinkle of cheese on her kibble and I only buy the cheapest grated cheese for it (Creamfields I think it is in Tesco). She’d definitely climb over me to make friends with the burglars if they offered the good stuff though.

We also have “Dog ham” which is that awful 50p for a million slices chicken roll that we use for treats/training.

ODFOx · 29/12/2022 22:31

Bubble and squeak
Pickled onions
Mushroom pate
Wensleydale with cranberries

Bellarose53 · 29/12/2022 22:35

Twiglets

Timeforsinging81 · 29/12/2022 22:47

Errr mine are quite random

Whole milk (instead of semi)
Kellogg's Crunchy Nut Cornflakes
White bread

These are special Christmas things I remember from my childhood that still continues today! Along with opening a tin of quality street once school had finished for Xmas.

SoShallINever · 29/12/2022 22:54

Port
Lagavulin
Bucks fizz
A million varieties of cheese.
Ginger in syrup (that I never know what to do with).
Milk roll bread, couldn't find it this year!

Jingleoverthatway · 29/12/2022 22:57

Cheese & Crackers, and more specifically getting a plate of cheese & cracker at 9.30pm ish when I'm watching TV. Ordinarily I eat my dinner and that's it for the night but always have a little night plate at Christmas time.

shinynewapple22 · 29/12/2022 23:00
