Icing made me violently ill, can I still eat the cake?

DM very sweetly made me a special gluten free Christmas cake this year. She made Royal icing with raw egg white on boxing day, she and I and DC had some that afternoon. Boxing day night DM and I both violently ill, just feeling better today. DC only had cake, not icing, and no-one else had the cake so am confident icing is culprit.

Question is now what to do with cake. DM says just take off the icing, cake fine dont waste it. DH says 'are you mad just chuck it and the panettone in the same tupperware, it's all contaminated'. I am veering towards chucking but feeling guilty. WWYD?

Throw it out. And don’t trust the judgment of someone who just made you ill!

Givemeallthegin8 · 28/12/2022 15:27

Bin it obviously!

DingDangMintyBells · 28/12/2022 15:27

I wouldn’t risk it.

Dartmoorcheffy · 28/12/2022 15:27

Are you sure it was the icing. That's a very quick recovery from salmonella.

Madeyoulook · 28/12/2022 15:28

I don’t see how you would even feel like eating it. Chuck the whole thing!

MadamOracle · 28/12/2022 15:28

God, just chuck it. Why would you risk it? Team DH all the way on this one.

NoSquirrels · 28/12/2022 15:29

It’s a shame, but I’d certainly throw it. And I’m fairly relaxed about food.

NoSquirrels · 28/12/2022 15:30

Or offer it back to your DM so she can decide whether or not to ‘waste’ it.

bloodywhitecat · 28/12/2022 15:31

If they were shop bought eggs and Lion stamped the flock is vaccinated against salmonella.

purplecorkheart · 28/12/2022 15:34

I would bin. It may not be the cake or icing but no way I would risk it. It quite possibly some kind of stomach bug but wouldn't fancy seeing 2023 in on the loo!

Iamnotalemming · 28/12/2022 15:44

@Dartmoorcheffy it was the only thing that no-one else ate and we were the only ill ones.

@bloodywhitecat one of the eggs was from DM's hens 🙄

Bin it … why would you risk it!

Iamnotalemming · 28/12/2022 15:49

OK guys, it's going in the food bin. If I take the icing off it will just stay on the side for the next 2 weeks while I can't stomache eating it. Thanks for the responses.

If in doubt, chuck it out x

astralpiano · 28/12/2022 16:40

Don't risk it. And don't feed it to the birds either

Blossomandbee · 28/12/2022 16:47

I wouldn't risk it no, it's not worth it. Presumably the same eggs are in the cake, albeit probably more 'diluted' in the cake mixture.
Offer it back to your DM if she thinks it's ok, otherwise bin.

Orangesare · 28/12/2022 16:49

It’s unlikely to be salmonella as you recovered quickly. I suspect the egg was just off, as in a bit old and it was used raw.

And also cooked in the cake mixture, hence the children being fine.

Then you need to bin I'm afraid

Bluekerfuffle · 28/12/2022 17:36

I would just chuck the icing and eat the cake as your DC had the cake without icing and were fine.

Rhaenys · 28/12/2022 17:59

Bin it. Although I thought raw egg was safe to eat?

Silvercatowner · 28/12/2022 18:11

I'd bin the cake just on general principles. But it sounds far more like noro or some other stomach bug - it's unlikely to have been the cake icing.

IET · 28/12/2022 18:13

Yes, bin.

CheesesandWines · 28/12/2022 18:39

Put the salmonella cake in the bin.

2reefsin30knots · 28/12/2022 18:48

I don't know how you can even look at it if it made you ill. I got 'food poisoning' from a pizza of a particular flavour many months ago and still cannot even smell that type of sauce without feeling nauseous.
