Last minute present needed for DH. Usually buys what he needs, so hard to buy for, but he does like walking. Local walks or up hills. Any suggestions ?

Walking poles
Hat with Bluetooth headphones built in
Nice thermal base layers
Gloves that allow you to use your phone
A book of walks (ideally that are local to you)

KangarooKenny · 16/12/2022 07:19

I like the idea of base layers and the gloves, is there any you would particularly recommend ?

Does he have proper walking/hiking shoes? They make a huge difference.

Thick socks and thermals too.

Yes, he has boots.

You can never have too many base layers, I've got at least 6 of them some thicker than others.

Millets are good, they do them on several colours and they're good value. They sometimes do deals like Buy One, Get one Half price etc.

Sealskin brand gloves are great for weather like we're having at the moment in UK

KangarooKenny · 16/12/2022 07:45

I’ve ordered the base layers, thanks.

I like a hat that keeps the wind out of my face but is warm. (So has a visor at the front) A decent rucksack with lots of pockets. Posh socks that are warm. Decent waterproof gloves. A navigation course. A gps device. Power bank and cables.

HowmuchcanispendatChristmas · 16/12/2022 08:05

Oh my eyes 😂. Didn’t put my glasses on and read this as DH likes wanking! Thought people were going to suggest different lubes or tissues 😂😂😂

Roselilly36 · 16/12/2022 08:08

DH loves his thermal gloves and hat, 2-3 tog rated, really warm.

Saucery · 16/12/2022 08:08

Bit short notice for Christmas but a future idea might be a personalised OS Map. You can have the centre of it fixed at a favourite spot, or to cover a favourite walking area/ new walking area. You add your own photo and cover title.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 16/12/2022 08:09

Personalised Ordnance survey map centred on a special area, it could be your house at the centre if there are decent walks nearby. They can be personalised with a photo and your own description on the front cover.

Even if you don’t have great walking country on your doorstep, these are great for dog walkers to try out new local routes. shop.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/custom-made/
Last orders by 20th December.

MagpiePi · 16/12/2022 08:12

I’m hoping for some good quality gaiters.
How about a flask for hot drinks?

PennyJosephineMercury · 16/12/2022 08:12

Proper wool walking socks would be my tip. There’s nothing else like them.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 16/12/2022 08:15

If he likes a good long walk consider Barbour jacket, tweed cap, socks, scarf, flask.

If he's a bit more serious then walking poles, decent compass, whistle, caribiners, boot bag.

Or if you have anything local a membership, for example

I love walking and there is nothing finer than really good walking socks. They cost £20+ a pair so a few pairs of those would be really appreciated.

I also covet waterproof ankle gaiters.

Long and short sleeved wickable base layers are also great.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 16/12/2022 08:20

I was at a carol concert last week and my friend was wearing one of these, I could not believe how warm it was. Would be ideal for winter walking.

tanstaafl · 16/12/2022 08:22

If they’re the types of walks that involve rucksack for food and water then a fold up seat like this?

Wherediditallgo · 16/12/2022 08:23

Merino wool base layer

DreamingOfAGreenChristmas · 16/12/2022 08:39

I second a folding foam sit mat. They weigh nothing, fold up small and easily tuck into your rucksack and make a huge difference when sitting on a cold damp rock or even a cold park bench.

RainyDaysByTheFire · 16/12/2022 09:05

What about some re-waterproofing stuff for his coat? Nothing says love like a bottle of Nikwax... 😂

But seriously might be one of those fun and not too serious but actually really helpful when the time comes presents!

PositiveLife · 16/12/2022 09:14

Things I've got that I love and would make good presents:
Thermal mug with a lid that locks (mountain warehouse do them)
360dry socks
1000 mile socks (a lot of people like bridgedale but they don't seem to suit me)
Snacks - trail mix, protein bar, Kendal mint cake
Hydration pack (holds water, drink from a tube, this assumes he has a compatible backpack)
OS maps
Subscription to OS maps app
Whistle
Pacing beads
Emergency bivvy
First aid kit
Tick remover
Smidge spray
Navigation cards from Shaven Raspberry

RegularNameChangerVersion21 · 16/12/2022 09:44

Smartwool maximum padding socks. Stupidly expensive but my husband loves his and it makes him so much more comfy.

SuperstarDJsherewego · 16/12/2022 09:44

Sealskin gloves are great, warm and wind proof . I’ve just lost one of mine and am very upset!

MrsJoker · 16/12/2022 09:49

Combined mobile battery charger/hand warmer. I love mine

CoffeeChocolateWine · 16/12/2022 09:50

I've bought my DH some Sealskinz waterproof socks. He's a mountain biker but I can imagine they would be useful for walkers too.
