Board game for adults which fits these criteria

MogTheForgetableCat · 14/12/2022 22:25

I'm after suggestions for a board game for adults please.

Criteria:

Good for two players
Not anything really obvious like monopoly or cluedo
But also not something really obscure for extreme enthusiasts with a million rules
Something that can travel fairly easily so not a massive board or big components - maybe something based around cards, but not cards against humanity
Preferably around a tenner, maybe £15ish max

Any suggestions?

Probably too obvious but I'm gonna say battleships!

CountdownCat · 14/12/2022 22:27

Backgammon? We have a set that rolls up very compact

Gronkle · 14/12/2022 22:28

I've just bought Richard Oman's House of Games Game, it's just a buzzer and some cards, easy to play and carry.

Arboretum is an absolutely fantastic 2-player card game. Light rule set but really sharp and competitive.

(As is Mindbug but it’s not widely available yet)

Kingdomino and Patchwork are not card games but very very good tile laying games in small boxes.

All usually around the £15-£20 mark.

UNO.

CaptainMum · 14/12/2022 22:30

Dominion card game 😊

Individewl · 14/12/2022 22:30

“A shot in the dark” - not so much a board game but its a good one!

Allsnotwell · 14/12/2022 22:31

Yatzee - waterstones have a compact one

CuteOrangeElephant · 14/12/2022 22:32

Was going to suggest Patchwork!

Skiphopbump · 14/12/2022 22:33

Love letters - we have an original version and a star wars one too.

Monopoly Deal is good. Or how about Pass the Pigs? It’s very portable!

Ubbee · 14/12/2022 22:36

F**k the game. Meets all your criteria plus hilarious

Namefortodayandtomorrow · 14/12/2022 22:40

Skyjo - card game for 2 or more players. Very addictive!

TheSmallAssassin · 14/12/2022 22:41

How about learning cribbage? I used to like playing it in the pub in the olden days, and have been meaning to get the crib board out again. Not great if you're looking for a present rather than just a game to play together though.

This book's quite good

Parlour Games for Modern Families

I'm not really fulfilling the brief!

Colourbrain is good fun

Rosalindisafuckingnightmare · 14/12/2022 22:43

Jaipur
Citadel
Duel (Seven Wonders two player version)
Boss Monster
Century Spice Road
Monopoly Deal (surprisingly good!)

SanFranBear · 14/12/2022 22:45

Yahtzee... Yahtzee... YAHTZEE! It is the absolute best game and you don't have to be good at Maths..

It's my favourite and played with my DB over Zoom for a lot of lockfown (both on our own on opposite sides of the country!) There's even a world championships held in Vegas which we lightheartedly joked about entering (and we will one day!!)

So Yahtzee is everything you're looking for - cheap too!

Bigbus · 14/12/2022 22:46

I’m another one to recommend Monopoly Deal. Also we like Mind the Gap and Ludo is surprisingly brutal!

carefulcalculator · 14/12/2022 22:46

Port Royal
Seven Wonders Duel
Fluxx

Another vote for Yahtzee, DH and I always take it on holiday and have had some rather lively games in the bar of an evening Blush
