I am just about to put some home made items in bags for people in a class I attend- just had a last minute wobble.
Do people like such things?

I love making, giving & receiving homemade gifts. I love how much thought people put into them.

hattie43 · 13/12/2022 15:43

Edibles yes , twee ornaments not so much . The trouble with a lot of home made stuff is it's just not very good . Controversial I know but we've all seen the empty craft stalls of home made knits and pots.

CoQ10 · 13/12/2022 15:44

Yes definitely.
It shows talent and care and thoughtfulness.
Would love to know what you are making!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 13/12/2022 15:45

Depends in who is giving and the quality of the item.

If it's food, I want to be able to trust basic hygiene standards have been adhered to. I'm not terribly fussy but there are some people I would not eat anything they gave me.

If it's something else, it depends in what it is, whether I would have use for it and the quality.

speakout · 13/12/2022 15:46

I just thought it's maybe a bit of a proud thing to do!
It's a simmer pot sachet for home fragrance, with christmassy herbs and spices- cloves, cinnamon, orange etc.

Is it something you just leave on the hob, simmering all day? I wouldn't know what it was, would probably bin it so rather wasteful. I don't like home made gifts though, would rather have nothing.

SantaBakula · 13/12/2022 15:53

Can you explain what it is , I have never head of one.

hattie43 · 13/12/2022 15:53

Simmer pot , hmm

Sparkletastic · 13/12/2022 15:54

I wouldn't be at all keen but different strokes for different folks.

christmastime11 · 13/12/2022 15:56

I'd love that OP. Makes the house smell amazing and Christmassy!

ThatshallotBaby · 13/12/2022 15:56

I’d love it. Love anything like that.

speakout · 13/12/2022 15:56

A simmer pot is a collection of natural herb, spice, dried fruit or resin, you simmer only for 10 minues or so to release the aroma.
An air freshner, but in natural form. You can use things you already have in the kitchen, but this is an easy sachet form.

( not my video btw- it's just to explain)

Sorry video didn't work.

A simmer pot really is a thing, tons on yt, pinterest etc.

Depends what it is an the talent level of who gave it.

I have a friend who is lovely but super into 'arts and crafts' EVERYTHING she makes looks like it was made by a two year old, I have 3 kids of my own who make that same stuff (and honestly I dont even like it when my kids make it, I have a house full) so I have no energy or space to be storing art sculptures made from sweetie wrappers made by an adult.

I had a friend in school that was an INCREADIBLE artist, their portraits looked like actual photographs... just a pure talent. If they drew a picture of my kids of something I would totally hang it on the wall.

The way I look at it is if someone is talented enough they could 'sell' that item then its 'gift' level... if not theres probably no value to it being a gift.

I pretty much never want homemade food though between my allergies and not knowing the hygiene or storage info I just would chuck it straight out.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 13/12/2022 15:59

What's the class you attend? That would probably give an idea of how well they would go down.

I wouldn't be willing to simmer something on the hob but would be happy with similar as a pot pourri in a net/satin sachet that I could hang somewhere or maybe a drawer sachet. Non christmassy spices for the drawer though.

Stuffthisstuff · 13/12/2022 15:59

Do you leave it in the saucepan all day and reheat it every so often? Wouldn't it leave a lingering smell in the saucepan when you wanted to use it for food?

MardyMincepie · 13/12/2022 16:00

If a small child makes something even if it looks terrible well I love the effort. With adults the thought is nice but very variable.

Floralnomad · 13/12/2022 16:00

I wouldn’t use that at all , sorry . I also don’t like home made food / drinks gifts either unless I am very close to the person and know the standard of hygiene in their home .

AnuSTart · 13/12/2022 16:02

I love homemade gifts as long as they are done with care and because that person wants to show me they care.
I then keep it forever if I can. It means a lot.
Even if it's just a matchstick picture.
Homemade gifts done on mass not so great.
I would definitely use your gift OP!

speakout · 13/12/2022 16:03

No the pot is not left to simmer all day, just a short 10 minute burst.
I don't think the smell would linger, it's all edible food type materials.
Pots get cleaned if you cook a curry or fish and the small doesn't linger.

They are yoga clases- so possibly a little more receptive to this kind of gift!

yoshiblue · 13/12/2022 16:04

I only give homemade items to my mum as like me, I like anything my child makes. I make high quality things but wouldn't make more widely, I generally don't think people appreciate the time involved.

bananaboats · 13/12/2022 16:04

Not something I would personally use, i would just stick to a box of chocolates if I was you!

Whataretheodds · 13/12/2022 16:04

Youve made them - may as well give them. It's the thought that counts
Surely noone sensible is going to be offended.

Do you just heat them in a saucepan on the hob?

speakout · 13/12/2022 16:05

Floralnomad this isn't a food item, it's an air freshner.

AnuSTart thanks

I wouldn't use something like that as I'd worry about my cats getting up on the oven and knocking it over or ingesting something toxic.
