I am just about to put some home made items in bags for people in a class I attend- just had a last minute wobble.
Do people like such things?

It depends what it is, and whether it's well made. If it's well made and either tasty or useful, then yes, I like receiving them.

thelobsterquadrille · 13/12/2022 16:54

speakout · 13/12/2022 16:17

thelobsterquadrille don't you cook though? Surely the risk to your cat is the same?
So the answer is some may like it others may hate it😂

Fair enough.

If I'm cooking, I'm in the kitchen supervising though. I also don't leave stuff that's potentially toxic to my pets out on the side.

The ingredients in your gift are toxic to animals so I wouldn't want it out anywhere.

Reugny · 13/12/2022 16:25

In regards to home made things from adults I like food, drink and plant cuttings/plants. From children I will accept anything.

Simmer pots - no. A sachet to put in my drawers/wardrobe of herbs you had grown yourself - yep.

Agree with this.

I'm probably not the target market for a simmer pot though.

LadyPoison · 13/12/2022 17:04

Well I would love one and I’d use it.

Blip · 13/12/2022 17:04

Food is a big yes from me if it's something I like. Homemade alcohol I wouldn't want.

Other homemade stuff I'd probably only appreciate if I'd previously seen something and requested it.

Some of my friends and family make gorgeous things that i would love to receive and others make stuff that they like themselves but that I really don't want to receive, either because I have no use or desire for it or because it's just not to my taste or poorly made.

A smelly thing to simmer on the cooker isn't something I'd ever use.

wibblewobbleball · 13/12/2022 17:07

Lovely idea OP. Give the gifts and if people want to use it they can. It's not like you're giving them an ornament they will have to display or anything!

wildthingsinthenight · 13/12/2022 17:20

I'd love to receive one OP

Thehawki · 13/12/2022 17:23

I think a simmer pot mix is a great idea! I'd love it and use it. Even if it wasn't something I used I would still be very grateful for the amount of time and thought put into it.

Floralnomad · 13/12/2022 17:23

speakout · 13/12/2022 16:05

Floralnomad this isn't a food item, it's an air freshner.

AnuSTart thanks

I know , I said I wouldn’t like that and also didn’t like home made food gifts .

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 13/12/2022 17:24

I would not want this. I don't need an air freshener and am suspicious of them - I open a window (yes even in this weather) if eg I am frying onions so the house doesn't smell.

I also don't want my kitchen to smell of anything, and wouldn't want to waste energy simmering weird stuff on my stove. Have never heard of a simmer pot!

Homemade edible things YES as long as it's from someone whose hygiene standards I trust.

NonagonInfinityOpensTheDoor · 13/12/2022 16:07

If you’re giving them to people who have no issue with pointlessly having the hob on for 10
minutes during a cost of living crisis I suppose… I usually love homemade gifts but sorry this is trash. It’s really inconvenient to do, doesn’t even leave a lasting smell… sorry it’s just pointless to me.

Well aren't you a treasure ? I bet your the type that would open a gift and tell someone to their face how shit it is !

I love handmade gifts OP , sounds great to me 👍

GremlinDolphin4 · 13/12/2022 17:36

People are very judge/ungrateful!

The fact that you wanted to give me a gift and had actually made it yourself would be lovely.

What I then did with it and Whether it fits in with lifestyle/hygiene etc is neither here nor there!

OtterInABox · 13/12/2022 17:41

People just have such crass manners on here. Were some of you dragged up?

OP - I would very much appreciate you thinking of me and I think a yoga friend is the perfect person to gift something like this to

coldec · 13/12/2022 17:41

Some people are mean!!

I would love to receive this

speakout · 13/12/2022 17:43

Thanks for all the lovely comments. x

It depends really. I got given 3 jars of chutney last year and still not eaten them all - dreading getting given more! Something to eat straight away would be fine, like fudge.

I wouldn't want something I had to simmer .. that's just giving me something else to do tbh!

GarlicSauce · 13/12/2022 17:45

It's very thoughtful OP. I'd much prefer it to anything that's edible. My SIL is forever gifting chutneys etc that she made and they go straight in the bin. I feel bad but I don't trust her levels of hygiene. She is forever licking her fingers while she cooks.

CornishGem1975 · 13/12/2022 17:46

Doubtful I'd use it, but you know your audience.

I wouldn't want anything homecooked though, that's for sure.

lightand · 13/12/2022 17:49

hmm

simmer pot from a classmate fine

homemade gifts fine if occasional.

Fleurdaisy · 13/12/2022 17:50

I’d love it. I’ve had one of these going in my house ( on and off, obvs) for the last week. Smells lovely.

Wibbly1008 · 13/12/2022 17:50

Really thoughtful and I would love this! Ah OP..you kind Christmassy thing you! X

Cassillero · 13/12/2022 17:50

I've never heard of a simmer pot, but I want one now. It sounds lovely and a lot healthier than the scented candles I use. I have a yoga teacher friend who would adore this, so I'm sure your friends will too.

There's some quite awful comments on this thread but I'm guessing (and I may be way off base here) that these snide rude fuckers are not yogis.

Quveas · 13/12/2022 17:51

I'm weird. I judge people not gifts. If someone gave me a gift I'd be grateful they thought of me, even in passing. If it wasn't the most brilliant of things, I wouldn't care. They say it's the thought that counts. Apparently I'm weird in believing that. I'm happy to be weird.

And I'm looking up simmering pots right away. They sound so much fun!

TheLadyOfHay · 13/12/2022 17:52

Simmer pots sound intriguing, I would be pleased to be given one and would appreciate your thoughtfulness in making and giving them.

My aunt used to make piles of hideous tat to sell at craft fairs. Oh the pleasure to open your Christmas present each year and receive an item that had not sold. I am still scarred by the memory of a malevolent looking duck made of toilet roll inners.

Yup!

My next door neighbour gives us home-made chutney, jam, salted caramel sauce, fudge. My DC have looked forward to that parcel so much over the years. I'm crap at that stuff so try to think of something she'd use in the kitchen/ an experience she'd not buy herself. I keep trying to get her to apply to bake off! Her home-made cakes left on our doorstep regularly get devoured! She's a neighbour to die for.
