Gift idea for 13yo and 17yo non binary girls

Help dh not sorted friends dc gifts and seeing them this weekend. We always spend £30 or so. Up to £50 max.

No idea what to get them both. They like pc gaming. They are both quite "cool" but their taste is individual. The younger one likes Wednesday (netflix) so something goth could be good.

Has to be to order quickly!!

This is impossible right?

OP posts:

Do Forbidden Planet do vouchers? So many cool manga, graphic novels and merch in there - ideal for teens with non-mainstream tastes.

coldec · 13/12/2022 11:21

oh dear, OP you've opened a can of worms with all the Mumsnetters posting terribly clever "stuff and nonsense comments" about your NB young people.

I said it was nonsense. A poster suggested OP was referring to AUTISM. Fuck that shit.

Stuff so 'non-mainstream' that it's actually mainstream now.

I think the person referred to ASD because a much larger proportion of ND people also call themselves NB. IME when you always feel very different from other girls due to being ND, with all the chatter about trans and NB, it could lead you to thinking perhaps you're just different to everyone else because you have a different gender to boys or girls i.e. fluid or NB.

I don't think there's any such thing as ND/ASD interests, everyone has very different interests, since we're all human and stuff :)

Please, don't try to explain or excuse what that poster said.

They aren't the OPs kids , so I presume she said non binary girls because, clearly, they are girls. But she's been informed (by the girls/ parents) they are 'non binary' and is therefore stressed about what to buy.
It's also very possible the OP thinks that this is nonsense, but it's not her place to say or do anything.

I would personally just go with cash in a card at that age!

Do they like makeup? Got a non binary generally gender-wibbly child and they like doing weird makeup, so vouchers for Boots or somewhere they could get makeup and more?

I would get them vouchers for somewhere. If they are into gaming you probably don't know what games they already have so it's difficult to choose. Or you might buy a game they don't like. Same for music or books.

I'm as gender critical as they come but also read the situation this way.

YouHaveAnArse · 13/12/2022 12:17

This is a thread for present advice, not a thread for posters to talk about their personal feelings regarding non-binary identities.

Maybe the original Addams Family films if they haven't seen them?

YouHaveAnArse · 13/12/2022 12:19

Or, yes, Forbidden Planet or your local comic book shop vouchers is a good shout. Heartstopper is very big with teens at the moment.

Marcipex · 13/12/2022 12:22

Vouchers, honestly, that’s what teens like.

aSofaNearYou · 13/12/2022 12:26

I disagree with the "teenagers prefer vouchers" thing that people always say tbh. Maybe the 17 year old but at 13 my mum was still paying for most of my stuff so this would be a total non gift for me, as money wasn't a major concern. I'd have much preferred something physical.

YouHaveAnArse · 13/12/2022 12:33

@aSofaNearYou Depends how much money of your own you have - at that age I was expected to buy things like music and entertainment out of my own pocket money, so getting a voucher for a CD etc was a really nice treat, especially if it was for a shop where I'd have to go to the Big City to spend it because I could save it and go out with my mum for the day in the holidays. Obviously I am ancient, though.

I agree, I'd just be careful about it because it really depends on the family in question and whether the kids are expected to buy their own stuff. If you buy a voucher for a child whose parents comfortably give them money for things they want then it's basically meaningless.

Strange. I'm autistic but I know I'm a woman.

Withholdingvitalinfo · 13/12/2022 13:28

Lol this is blue for boy pink for girl merch gone postal

Best to describe them another way - I always find it best to ask parents what they are into - gets away from the gender stereotyping etc

I have teens that age that both like Costa vouchers, chocolate, skincare stuff and trainers and accessories for them.

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 13/12/2022 13:39

'Non-binary girl' is a bit of an oxymoron. Why couldn't you just say girl?

OriginalTheory · 13/12/2022 13:47

I mean honestly it doesn't have to work with the same software as long as it just doesn't somehow conflict. Biggest danger is if they already have one - but that's what gift receipts are for.

But if gift receipts aren't an option for some reason, I can't see that steam vouchers would ever be a miss for a PC gaming teen (of any gender).

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 13/12/2022 13:47

I really don’t understand what non-binary means. I mean, I looked up the definition and I understand the words written there but I don’t understand how it differs from “being a human being”.

OriginalTheory · 13/12/2022 13:48

MrKlaw · 13/12/2022 10:28

danger zone though. Does the RGB keyboard work with the same RGB software they use for their mousepad/fans/mouse etc - total minefield.

(My post above was attempting to quote this...)

Lovemusic33 · 13/12/2022 13:49

I wouldn’t order from Emp, my last delivery took over 2 weeks to come and when I tried to track it I realised it was coming from Germany. If you order from them it’s unlikely to get here for Christmas.

I would just go for vouchers or cash so they can chose something they like, teenagers are fussy and hard to buy for.

Lheuredubebe · 13/12/2022 13:50

Why couldn't you focus on the actual point of the thread? - Gift ideas.

OP I would've loved a diary at that age with a fancy pen. Other ideas I would've loved

  • Voucher for a new phone case
  • New wireless earbuds / or money towards them
  • A good book series if they like reading (the Gone series is fab for teens and young adults)
  • Voucher for a case for a Kindle (if they have one)
I think I'd focus more on easily personalisable stuff (like a phone case etc) that most parents probably wouldn't want to buy repeatedly throughout the year if their taste changes.
