Buying for my DF
budget up to £80
Always impossible to buy for as he tends to buy all he needs/desires as soon as he needs it
Also a low-key gift hoarder - very sweetly tends to keep any gifts from kids (though we’re all in our 30s) or GCs on display or in a drawer, no matter what they are! This drives my mother mad as she sees it as clutter.

I’d quite like to get him something that is actually good/useful/fun so it doesn’t end up being most obviously deployed as clutter.

Likes:
porsches (previously we have bought Porsche brand clothing - not to my taste but he has loved it)
Apple products (last year we bought him some apple tag things - big hit)
Flying (he has been bought several flying experience gifts)
Motorcycles (has many themed items)
Star gazing (have purchased him a star map of the day he was born - into the gift storage place it has gone)
weird novelty gifts (blue plaques, anything themed around his profession)
starwars novelty items
opera (I bought him and my mother opera vouchers a few years back- still unused)
etc etc

Reticent to do an experience gift as I find they don’t tent to be used

has anyone seen anything in their travels that would fit the bill? Also keen to get something “cute” from GC - GC is not yet really old enough to choose something for my DF.

any bright ideas gratefully received!

Something consumable like luxury food or alcohol you know he'd enjoy? Electronic photo frame with lots of cute pics of DC? Perhaps buy a plot of land so he can become a Lord: www.highlandtitles.com/

Does he enjoy walking/outdoor activities? From experience with men in my family, nice branded wooly hats tend to go down well. Also branded but practical walking jumpers.

I second the luxury food idea. What about posh chocolate/whisky/lager? Something he wouldn't usually buy himself.

What about Porsche Lego?

You would have to chip in with somebody else.

soap on a rope and socks. That is all men expect and want.

I was just going to say to buy him some socks. They're actually useful and you could get some warm ones for the winter.
Just because you can spend up to £80 doesn't mean you need to or should.

Indoor / outdoor thermometer. We get a lot of updates on the relative inside/outside temp from people we’ve given one to..!

Wifi connected wildlife camera for the garden?

Cute from GC - some sort of Xmas tree bauble thing that they painted / hand printed/ has a photo of them with grandpa in it?

National Trust or Historic Houses membership?

Lego.
#TopTip

Buy it from lego.com, free p&p over £50 but before hitting the buy it button, join the free VIP club, you might get a small freebie depending on how much you spent.

Bird House/Table/feeder/feed

Bird water bowl/fountain.

A gift for him and a gift for nature.

InTheFourthAtMalloryTowers · 11/12/2022 03:28

You say he likes star gazing how about naming a star after him. No chance of that cluttering up the house 😂❤️

Remains a legacy forever too.

KangarooKenny · 11/12/2022 07:48

I’d go with food/drink, then your mum won’t bat mad about the hoarding.

A velvetiser from hotel chocolate 🤣
Seriously i buy my dad books and food and toiletries

illiterato · 11/12/2022 08:02

Alpaca socks and a nice shower gel. Everyone uses shower gel.

Also, and this depends on the person, “Being Mortal”, a book to encourage you to think about end of life but in a non depressing way. I have got for DF and know he will like it but some people might think you’re trying to get rid of them, which would put a downer on Christmas lunch.

bravotango · 11/12/2022 08:08

The surprise hit last year was a set of boules - we've also got Finnish skittles and both of those have been used in the garden whenever we're all together and the weather is dry

God I’d like a nesting box with webcam

How about an event that you actually buy the tickets for ? Liaise with your mum and agree a performance / event and then purchase the tickets. ( I’m terrible at using vouchers too). Bought my DH tickets to an American car day at Brooklands - they have lots of different car events there as it’s an old race track. There’s Festival of Speed at Goodwood etc. I’ve also bought tickets for various singers / ballet for my mum who’s taken a friend to them.

CuriousMama · 11/12/2022 11:31

@LazJaz does he have really good binoculars? Dh has telescopes but the good binoculars are amazing for stars and planets. I've managed to see Jupiter's moons. We have the tripod too as they're heavy and need to be steady.

Iwontbecomeher · 11/12/2022 11:36

I’ve bought my DH the Ancestry DNA kit
