Buying for my DF
budget up to £80
Always impossible to buy for as he tends to buy all he needs/desires as soon as he needs it
Also a low-key gift hoarder - very sweetly tends to keep any gifts from kids (though we’re all in our 30s) or GCs on display or in a drawer, no matter what they are! This drives my mother mad as she sees it as clutter.

I’d quite like to get him something that is actually good/useful/fun so it doesn’t end up being most obviously deployed as clutter.

Likes:
porsches (previously we have bought Porsche brand clothing - not to my taste but he has loved it)
Apple products (last year we bought him some apple tag things - big hit)
Flying (he has been bought several flying experience gifts)
Motorcycles (has many themed items)
Star gazing (have purchased him a star map of the day he was born - into the gift storage place it has gone)
weird novelty gifts (blue plaques, anything themed around his profession)
starwars novelty items
opera (I bought him and my mother opera vouchers a few years back- still unused)
etc etc

Reticent to do an experience gift as I find they don’t tent to be used

has anyone seen anything in their travels that would fit the bill? Also keen to get something “cute” from GC - GC is not yet really old enough to choose something for my DF.

any bright ideas gratefully received!

Presents my DF enjoyed:
a magazine subscription, jigsaw puzzles and a puzzle mat, hip-height garden planters for growing vegetables without having to bend down (arthritis), tickets to the Bootleg Beatles, online escape room he could do with the grandchildren, cashmere machine-washable jumpers, proper wool socks.

If he likes food / cooking etc I’ve found a cheese
making kit I’m getting for DSF

You can get Star Wars Lego head models on Amazon within budget, I know that may be one clutter when made... but it will be cool clutter!

Grab him a personalised star map - https://picturethestars.com/

I bought DH (73) a trail camera for his birthday. He loves it. Captures pics of wildlife in the garden.

I've bought my dad a hamper of lovely things to eat, his favourite whisky and made him some Biscoff fudge.

Something from Elvis & Kresse e.g. a wallet made from a recycled fire hose.

@LazJaz does he have really good binoculars? Dh has telescopes but the good binoculars are amazing for stars and planets. I've managed to see Jupiter's moons. We have the tripod too as they're heavy and need to be steady.

Would you g as be a recommendation for these type of binoculars please?

I’ve found a travel pouch, passport holder from Mulberry, or an equivalent ‘good’ brand has gone down well. Also if he has a phone, something like a nice phone case?

hunpoint · 19/12/2022 10:29

How about an Apple mini pod so he can listen to podcasts/music from his phone.

Or a cashmere scarf or socks?

ArcheryAnnie · 19/12/2022 10:37

Somebody on another thread bought an "older man who has everything" a really good steak, which I thought was genius.

This company is amazing and their stuff is so covetable. And nobody else does it.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/12/2022 11:17

I've been reading this thread as DH is 61 and really has everything he needs/ wants ... nothing on here is grabbing me, not even socks as he has plenty of the types he likes. Confused

FartSock5000 · 19/12/2022 15:23

I'd go for a Lord/Laird Title and a decent bottle of whisky. Something like a Macallan or one of the Islay distilleries. He can sip on it when he feels like a special tipple or keep it as an investment?

paintitallover · 19/12/2022 15:31

I think an experience rather than a tangible item. Dinner out token, theatre etc, or a day out for two at xxx (his preference or hobby related).

butterflymum · 19/12/2022 16:44

A cushion? If he has a particularly favourite insect/bird/animal, google Evans Lichfield cushions. Some excellent choices.

butterflymum · 19/12/2022 16:46

oops, that was meant to say "suggestion for @ErrolTheDragon ".

“Also if he has a phone, something like a nice phone case?”

How about a telescope?

A David Austen rose. Lots of lovely names and hopefully one that will tie in and mean something.

CuriousMama · 21/12/2022 19:54

@Serenitesanta sorry I didn't see your post. Dh says 10 x 50 binoculars are good.

Why is a phone case funny? 🤔 We all have nice ones does he?

Croquet set

Sundial

Hamper with all sorts of small goodies that you know he enjoys

Book of aerial photos or Britain or another country he likes to visit (this went down well with a relative of similar age who likes flying)

ItsDinah · 21/12/2022 20:40

Apple i-phone leather wallet with Magsafe. Room for phone and 3 bank cards. £59.

For gift from GC...Waterstones has A One Minute Paper Airplanes Kit at £12.99. It's ace. Argos have a radio- controlled helicopter reduced to less than £10. Otherwise something else that GC would like to help Grandpa play with immediately. If you have a local joke shop,it might be worth a visit for GC to pick something. Too late for mail order this year.
