Every room and outside at Christmas ir is it just in the cheesy Christmas films currently on Netflix and the like ? I mean poinsettias and wreaths in the kitchen and huge displays outside ? In many ways it's amazing but is it just in the films ????

That was dead interesting, @RLScott !

My family don't drape their entire houses in exterior lights but do put some seasonal decorations in most rooms. Our decorations definitely aren't single-use, many have been in the family for decades and we treasure them!

TenoringBehind · 06/12/2022 07:14

Christmas decorations in America are amazing. The best I’ve seen are in Washington - huge and stunning wreaths on front doors.

I hope not, so much single use of plastic isn’t good for anyone. It’s like going shopping at Walmart, buy 10 items and you get them packed in 10 single bags..

Single-use plastic what??

Christmas decor lasts years.

Morestrangethings · 06/12/2022 07:43

I had no idea. Thank you for your post @RLScott (I rarely @ posters but I just wanted you to know I really liked your post). I love the rebellious spirit people show when traditions and culture are attacked. I had no idea that this included Christmas celebrations - songs hymns. Wishing you a happy festive season.

"You feel better now Karen?"

Vile. The consumer rant wasn't ideal but this comment is disgusting. Why do you think that's ok?

Agree. Mumsnet is not the place for sexist insults, thank you very much.

@2018SoFarSoGreat
????
Stop with the misogyny.
'Karen' as in insult is not acceptable.
Never has been.
You're on Mumsnet, largely frequented by women why on earth do you think it's ok to be sexist?

FuckabethFuckor · 06/12/2022 08:16

Poster posts a bilious diatribe generalising a nation of 350 million people.

Someone else calls poster Karen.

And that’s what’s unacceptable here?

’Gnats and camels’ springs to mind…

Anti-American sentiments and prejudice is past for the course on threads like this.

Exacatky how many Americans do you know, because I don't know a single one that this description would fit. Some Americans may be like this. So are some Brits, and if you don't know this then you haven't been around many shops to view the British version of single-use plastic crap that is sold - most of which, like the American stuff, actually comes from China!

What is revolting is your nasty charicature of all Americans.

Or you bring your own bags and get no plastic bags at all. It's a choice you make.

We're in Canada and yes, there's a lot of decorations

So are we (Toronto), and while there is loads of stuff in public areas (as there is in London), people’s houses just look normal to me… Trees, lights, decorations. Have not investigated anyone else’s bedrooms but the kids’ rooms and kitchens have been normal.

The Toronto Christmas parade is in early November though. That is weird. I think they get it out of the way before it gets too cold?

Was going to say at least in the US it looks well thought out and attractive.
Any excuse to bash "the Americans" though.

i only joined mn a few months ago, and in that time I’ve seen growing numbers of critical posts about America. The posts are just rude, and often full of ridiculous generalisations.

Also, just like to add, what some people forget is the US is amazing geographically. You can go from huge desserts to somewhere like Montana and the California coastline and so much more. I’ve only been there briefly, but my Dad who travelled a lot, said he’d never seen such extraordinary, changing landscapes.

It's not just the US, it's any part of the world other than the UK, some of the utter rubbish I have read on MN is astounding, it's hard to believe people can be so ignorant, and yes, rude.

Coxspurplepippin · 06/12/2022 09:48

We were lucky enough to have a holiday in New England in December a few years ago. The small towns looked absolutely beautiful with garlands and trees and millions of tiny twinkling lights, lots of beautiful houses with huge door wreaths and ribbons and lanterns. It felt proper Christmassy.

Not so fond of giant inflatable Santas and lots of neon but that's just personal preference.

This kind of thing - just beautiful

monsteronahill · 06/12/2022 09:58

Quite a few of the cities are super well decorated too - not just buildings, but flowerbeds are filled with greenery and baubles / decorations etc, it's beautiful!

The only American people I have on my social media to see the inside of their houses are either influencers who do, or my friends who also do so I'm not sure my sample size is representative.

I'm in the UK and I decorate every room - trees in most rooms (apart from bathrooms), lights everywhere, garlands etc. It's like a hallmark movie!

Soonenough · 06/12/2022 10:13

Originally from US , so all the decorations came with us when we moved. It was a real novelty then as the shops here had not yet started to feature the huge amount they do now. Friends and relatives used to bring their come to see .
I still do it now as an adult . Love Christmas, love decorations, every room is done downstairs. Would like to think it tasteful. When DCs were young , their rooms were decorated with all sorts tinsel , foil chains to appease my inner garish wants .

I couldn’t/wouldn’t put in all that work, but I love that some people do.

AlwaysLatte · 06/12/2022 10:35

I have a wreath and Christmas bunting in my kitchen! But I don't go crazy and I only have a small tree in my porch with lights, and a reindeer head on the house wall.

CousinKrispy · 06/12/2022 11:35

Your house sounds great @monsteronahill !

pleaseandthankyou45 · 06/12/2022 11:39

I'm American and while we do it have more decorations generally it is not like in the movies. I don't know anyone who decorates their bedrooms for Christmas!

CoolShoeshine · 06/12/2022 11:57

I’ve recently been to New York at Halloween and many of the houses had lovely decorations of autumn coloured flowers and shrubs plus pumpkins and a few other decorations, all very tasteful. Way less tacky and plastic than my local city in the UK.

Cantstandbullshit · 06/12/2022 12:27

I’m a Brit living in Chicago and always wanted to go see this house.
