What are you getting your husband?

My husband made a comment that he gets the same stuff every year and I should try to think a bit more about what he'd like and he's right. He's very creative and always puts a lot of thought into his presents. I tend to get him new clothes, shoes etc nothing too exciting. We have a 3 year old and a 1 year old so it's always been quite rushed but wanting to make the effort, so maybe if I saw what you're getting your husband I could get some inspiration?

@HikingforScenery, fair enough. Maybe I interpreted it differently, but I would be offended by a comment like that.

But then my DH and I have had conversations in the past where I realise we're quite different in terms of gift giving and receiving. I was brought up to be grateful for whatever was given to me, whether it was genuine or not. It was just good manners. Whereas my DH has always been very honest about whether he likes something or not, to the point where he thinks nothing of asking for a receipt so he can take it back which I find excruciatingly embarrassing! I'm not saying one is right and one is wrong...just different! I would rather sneakily put something in a charity bag than tell someone their gift didn't quite hit the mark 😂 That's just me!

Arguably, even better communication from the OP's husband would be him making clear what he would actually like for Christmas rather than the guessing games!

ghd mini straighteners. He has a mod hair style and I’m sick of him using mine lol

photo processing kit
a nice black folder and the plastic wallets to hold negatives
joules socks
joules pants
bothams Whitby coffee
a coffee maker

no idea what else to get him

SicParvisMagna · 05/12/2022 21:41

I originally had intentions of not buying much this year, but as ever it proves difficult to stick to that 😅

So DH is getting
Tickets to see Iron Maiden at the O2 in July (and one for me to or he'd have had to go alone lol)
A couple of film books (Tarantino's newest book and another with interviews with anyone who's anyone in Hollywood going back to the golden age)
Blu-rays (new top gun, the batman)
Also upgrading a couple of films he has on DVD to blu-ray so they will go in his stocking.
Also in his stocking will be a new diary and the obligatory chocolate orange, smellies, new socks and pants 😅

I'd love to get him a new coat, he tried a nice one on in Zara while we was away last week and he looked so lovely in it but I'm really at the end of my budget now and anything else would just be buying for buyings sake.

Illumicrateme · 05/12/2022 22:05

I've been stumped for ideas this year, but so far, I have purchased a curry cookbook, a spice tin, and pestle and mortar. Oh, and a meat thermometer at his request.

gemloving · 05/12/2022 22:08

@Illumicrateme I habe now got him really nice sheepskin slippers (tkmaxx) & a really good quality backpack from stubble&co.

My DH is easy to please as he dosnt ever want much 😆

We haven’t done gifts much in the past other than socks and undies from the DCs. Last year we followed a thread I saw I bought our own stocking gifts for each other to give, it worked well, this year we have done similar including main gifts, his Christmas gift is also his birthday gift a PS5 which he’s already got now.

Ive also got him a Star Wars book, Star Wars droids, a bracelet with a nice inspirational saying and some meditation candles.

He likes Lego, but specific ones, the ones he wants are too expensive to think about buying. He dose like to read but he buys what he wants usually.

33goingon64 · 05/12/2022 22:15

He sends me an email with links to Amazon. I order it. Not Romantic but he gets what he wants and saves me having to think. This year it's mainly drill accessories.

MissMarpleRocks · 04/12/2022 04:02

Casino game for Boxing Day as we are hosting so he can set up for everyone once we’ve eaten

Galileo thermometer inspired by another thread

whiskey tasting for a weekend when we are away but that’s for both of us

Amazon fire stick

electric wine bottle opener

slimline portable charger from tech charge - think this will be his favourite

Pinching the idea of the thermometer! Mine will love it!

I completely get where you’re coming from @CoffeeChocolateWine :)

lightisnotwhite · 06/12/2022 07:32

I was going to get DH a back pack but a company he works with gifted him one last week. Perfect one with a built in charging port for his laptop and other features. He bloody loves it.
I mean great he’s got a fabulous freebie he loves but really annoying from a present buying perspective.

APurpleSquirrel · 06/12/2022 07:47

For DH I'm getting:

T-shirts - he needs some as his current ones have developed holes & it's all he wears
Pants - see above
Board games - he collects them
Vouchers for archery equipment - has recently taken this up
Chocolate

BearSoFair · 06/12/2022 10:54

Subbuteo - he recently found an old photo of him and BIL playing it and he's been wistfully reminiscing ever since!
Beer bread kit
Chilli jam 3-pack

@CoffeeChocolateWine I really am happy with his communication. We have an incredibly happy marriage and two young kids (3&1).

I find it strange to lie to my husband saying I love the present and am so grateful because that's what I've been taught to do. It's ok to rethink your values and actually make a conscious choice what is right for you no matter what values you were taught as a child.

Lying to my husband telling him I like the present and am so grateful but then give it to charity in secret because actually I don't like it? Each to their own but I personally find that very odd.

Sorry @gemloving. I didn't mean for you to take offence to my post in any way, and apologies if you did.

And to clarify, I wasn't saying that I do the 'acting grateful when I don't like something' with my husband...that was just a general example of how people do things differently. My DH and I have been together for 18 years and we've missed the mark present-wise enough times that we now ask each other if there is anything in particular we'd like for Christmas. If yes, we will buy that thing; if no, we take that as 'a surprise would be nice'.

But I just meant that I personally would find it quite frustrating if my DH told me that my presents weren't quite hitting the mark and that I should 'try harder'. I would feel patronised and slightly put out. SAnd I also think if there's something that he wants he should ask for it rather than expecting you to be a mind reader and then being unsatisfied that you haven't got him what he wanted! But as you say, each to their own and if you're happy with the way it works then that's all good.

I think the rucksack and the slippers are a lovely gift.

VictoriaClaire28 · 06/12/2022 14:03

Some trainers and tickets to the rugby.

He also loves cricket and coffee, so a couple of bags from here:

I’ve just bought a set of games from Jaques of London - 2 for 3 so I made a good saving which is always nice. Bridge set and Double 9 Dominoes, each in a mahogany case, plus Chinese chequers. We don’t have any TV channels or streaming services anymore so I thought he’d like some games that we can play together in the evenings. And it’s sentimental as I gave him a Chess set from there many years ago which he still has. 😊🎄

ItsRainingTacos79 · 06/12/2022 17:13

DH does a lot of international travel so a Rimowa trolley case seemed apt 🧳

We decided earlier this year not to buy much for each other as we have 4 little darlings to buy for. I have bought him his favourite perfume and a box of ferrero rocher. And he will probably get me the same just different scent and chocolate 😅

EmpressoftheMundane · 06/12/2022 21:51

I bought DH a carryon suitcase. Not sure what else to get him. He doesn't drink much, or particularly like coffee, or star wars, or cooking, or vinyl.

He’s very particular about his running and biking gear…so dangerous to puck for him. He is old enough to have acquired most of the tools he could want.

NortieTortie · 09/12/2022 20:10

3x games he's mentioned as his main present.
Gravity salt and pepper grinders.
Norse Mead and xmas t-shirt
Wallet as his old one is falling apart
Beer and scratchings set
then stocking fillers like handwarmers, choc etc

Was going to get him more cologne but I've spent enough. That can wait for his birthday haha

DeedlessIndeed · 09/12/2022 22:26

This year it is a particular vintage whisky he mentioned and a crystal cut old fashioned glass. Also have a few smaller bits that he's mentioned through the year - thermal socks (bit boring), some chocolate, an unusual liquer he wants to try, some cocktail bitters.

In the past gifts that have gone down well are a pizza oven for the garden and a Meater (meat thermometer probe type thing).

Weekends away always go down well too as it's a bit of a surprise, and I try to plan it around an event such as a concert for a band he likes or a sports event.
