How many people do you buy Christmas presents for?

I only have DH & DD to buy for plus DD’s 20th birthday on the 29th of November. And I know this sounds mad but I actually got presents for my hamster Lucy too.

I have heard of people buying for cousins, a dozen nursery or school staff, the postman/woman, binmen…sounds like a lot of work. No judgement on here please stay nice! 🤞

I made a list this year; 26 people. But that includes 5 from my work team where it is very much expected that the manager buys something for each team member. (I get something from my boss too)

myladybelle · 21/11/2022 02:23

Nursery thankfully is not included on that list, I only have to contribute cash to a common gift.

moaninggiraffe · 21/11/2022 02:31

I'm severely limiting things this year. In previous years we have given gifts to nearly every member of DH's family - aunts, uncles and cousins - smallish family but it added up - some we had only seen once the whole time we've been together (nearly 20 years!) He deals with his own side now, I buy for my DM & Stepfather, DF & stepmother, younger siblings and my sisters 3 kids. I've got 2 of my own DC to buy for and that's who I want to make it special for.

sashh · 21/11/2022 03:29

Two.

I don't actually celebrate it. I have occasionally spent the day with family and when I have I have taken presents.

Topseyt123 · 21/11/2022 03:37

I buy for 5 people normally. DH, three DDs and my mother. DD2 has a boyfriend now who spends a lot of time with us, so maybe something for him this year, but nothing further. I'm not one who would ever buy for dozens.

BlackberryCat · 21/11/2022 03:38

I buy for my kids and a token present for mum and dad. I also buy something for myself.

WingingIt101 · 21/11/2022 04:26

19! And that's the slimmed Dow version!

2x DC
4x parents / pil
2x siblings
2x grandparents
4x godchildren
2x friends I've known over 20 years
1x cleaner
1x postie
1x nursery

In terms of how do we do it?
Saving / deals / strict with budgets

We have reduced the list over the years - only children who are our godchildren rather than all kids of all friends, not getting for aunts and cousins etc.

Cleaner and postie would be next to go from the list of needed but they are both so good and we like to give them something small to show we value them.
Nursery is always a big box of chocs for the team to share!

Rtmhwales · 21/11/2022 04:32

I miss the days I used to travel and holiday instead of doing Christmas. Oooh put me on a Thai beach instead.

With Covid last two years we were really limiting ourselves. This year we see a lot of people.

So for me it's

DH
DS
DSS x2
Mother, MIL x2, FIL x2 (DH's parents remarried)
DH Grandmother
Nursery staff x3
Teachers x2
Best friend's 2 DSs
Secret Santa at work
Guinea pics x2 Wink

Thankfully I'm 95% done

starrynight21 · 21/11/2022 04:53

One for DH, then four for our Secret Santa people . That's it.

40 - and I slimmed it down this year!

4 parents
2 kids
7 Siblings/partners - don't buy for 1 sib
8 neices/nephews
7 godchildren/their siblings
Gran
Ex MIL & SIL
2 friends
3 teachers
Partner
3 friend's kids (very close)

The joy of having big families, I'm lucky DPs siblings don't do presents as he is one of 5 too!

I used to buy my friends and their kids but had to scale it back, only buy small gifts tho to keep it affordable and save throughout the year

AuntieMarys · 21/11/2022 05:52

Dh and 2 adult children.
4 great nephews/nieces get cash. Dh is responsible for buying for his 2 grandchildren.
That's it. Stopped buying for friends/ siblings years ago. I'd rather go out with them, than get a toiletry set I will never use.

CandyCaneLane0 · 21/11/2022 06:49

CeeceeBloomingdale · 21/11/2022 06:53

PuttingDownRoots · 21/11/2022 06:56

So 10 people plus a few extra things

CrispsnDips · 21/11/2022 07:00

Dare not count 😳😄 probably 50 people ..yikes

Bestcatmum · 21/11/2022 07:01

Just my three nieces and nephews and my own adult DS. I dont have spare cash for gifts for loads of people.

Mueslikid · 21/11/2022 07:03

Loads!

Between us, DH and I have 4 parents, 5 siblings (and their partners) , 7 nephews and nieces, 3 godchildren, so 19 people outside our own household.

euff · 21/11/2022 07:10

1 x DS
1 x DD
2x DSis
2 x DN

DH and I prefer to do something than exchange gifts.

If my sisters had kids then we would stop giving between siblings or just have token gifts. Don't do gifts for DN's not in the country (do other things). Used to do friends kids when little but stopped that. So much simpler and less of a stress trying to come up with something people will like within budget. Frees up budget to do things as a family and not scrimp so that 10 x gifts can be bought for others who probably won't even like them. Even 10x £10 is a day/ meal out for us as a family.

overgrowngrass · 21/11/2022 07:11

A lot!

DS
DP
Mum
Stepdad
Sister
Grandparent
Uncle
Cousin
3 x stepsiblings
2 x stepsibling spouses
4 x nieces / nephews
1 x secret Santa for a friend
2 x friend’s child
6 x token gifts for my team at work
3 x token gifts for neighbours

29 😵‍💫

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 21/11/2022 07:13

We’ve pared it right back in recent years:-
DH & I exchange presents
DD13
DD’s half brother
DM
DF
Sis in law x 2
Bro in law
DB

Also cut right back on the number of cards I send because of astronomical postage costs & I don’t give so many out either eg at work, I write one to everyone as we have a big staff & it was getting silly.

Pythonese · 21/11/2022 07:13

Immediate family only, the dog and my horse.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 21/11/2022 07:14

Oh & DD’s Secret Santa & sometimes we do Secret Santa at work ( £5 max)
