How many people do you buy Christmas presents for?

I only have DH & DD to buy for plus DD’s 20th birthday on the 29th of November. And I know this sounds mad but I actually got presents for my hamster Lucy too.

I have heard of people buying for cousins, a dozen nursery or school staff, the postman/woman, binmen…sounds like a lot of work. No judgement on here please stay nice! 🤞

Loads

DD
DH
8 work people that I manage (token though)
4 nursery staff (inexpensive again)
8 adult family members (ranges from £10-£50 each)
2 friends
3 children (family)
Farrier (he does a lot for my daft old horse with hoof issues) - just a bottle usually
Yard owner (also helps a lot with daft horse)- inexpensive
The pets (even the hens get a bag of treats!)

Budget is about £500

silverclock222 · 21/11/2022 09:21

DM, FIL,MIL,BIL,SIL,DP ajd cash for 3 kids. Cut it down years ago - much easier. Don't spend a lot on the adults we do buy for either (if I could stop BIL and SIL I would).

iusedtohavechickens · 21/11/2022 09:22

My 4 daughters, hubby, my sister and her partner, my father in law and his wife, hubby's grandparent, my old foster children who we are still in contact with and all of my close friends children. Oh plus our 2 dogs, 3 cats and guinea pig 😹

AaBbC · 21/11/2022 09:30

My 2 dd's, my parents, brother & his gf, my best friends 3 children & dd teacher

So 9 people

Fluffnotscruffy · 21/11/2022 09:42

In total 4.
DP, DD, secret Santa for sibling and DDs secret Santa for a cousin.

We stopped doing presents for siblings, nieces and nephews around 15 years ago.

We set a fairly generous amount for the secret Santa gifts at €150 - €200 and everyone puts up their wish list.

my friends and I do not give presents either, we arrange a weekend away post Christmas instead.

No teachers, service providers etc. to buy for either.

I’ll begrudgingly take part in a work secret Santa if asked to but I’d prefer not - the passing around of cheap tat irks me.

Garysmum · 21/11/2022 10:03

It used to be 42 - but due to death, separation and also children becoming adults - down to 15

RewildingAmbridge · 21/11/2022 10:12

DH
DS
Parents
PIL
DN X2 dB and I buy for the dc not each other
Grandma - only one left
Friend's DS' 3 in total again we buy for dc now but one couple we usually go out and celebrate at some point over Christmas with a nice dinner etc
DHs aunt and uncle who host us over Christmas.
So 13/14 family and friends.
Work 13 for my team, plus two peer colleagues I'm close to (the latter two I choose to do) the team is tough because it's expected to come out of my pocket but my line management keeps growing and my salary doesn't. I don't HAVE to buy they work so hard and in incredibly difficult circumstances, small gestures are really appreciated. I always do a card for each with a personal message about their work/resilience/support etc too.
DH is an only which helps and only has two cousins. I have twelve cousins if we all bought for each other and each others children it would be madness!

RewildingAmbridge · 21/11/2022 10:14

Forgot nursery and next door neighbour too

Fairnair · 21/11/2022 10:20

17 people

1 DH
3 Parents
1 brother
1 niece
1 niece’s boyfriend
3 husband”s cousins
7 Friends (5 adults, 2 young children)

plus my cat, & two dogs (my parents, & brothers dog).

I have a large extended family on my Dad’s side, but my Mum many years ago made the unpopular announcement that once my cousins got to a certain age (can’t remember what age), we should stop buying presents. Good job she did as I went on to have 12 first cousins, & there were only a couple at that time.

My cat gets new cardboard scratchers which I would get anyway, & a stocking which I fill with bags of treats, a few new small toys such as catnip mice, balls etc. and a new collar ready for when her current one needs replacing.

SallyWD · 21/11/2022 10:38

I haven't counted but my children, my in-laws (including sisters in laws), my parents and 2 brothers, my brothers' 3 children, my brothers' partners, maybe 5 or 6 different friends. So quite a lot of people really! Plus we're hosting 13 for Christmas. It's an expensive time but I do enjoy giving, receiving and hosting.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 21/11/2022 10:38

3 X DCs

Ive bought for teachers/key workers in the past including lollipop man but I think I’m just going to do some token cupcakes for the staff room this year.

Ive also given one of our regular couriers gifts, usually some of DHs beer, but now we have crap couriers so won’t be doing that.

DP, 7 family members (I have a small family), 2 friends and Secret Santa at work. So 11.

FrontDoor · 21/11/2022 11:56

We stopped adult presents in my family many years ago. We are also at the stage/age where we don’t have children younger than teens in the wider family, and we tend not to buy for the teens that aren’t our own (we spoil them enough on their birthdays).

So I’m just buying for my two DC this year, plus wine, chocolates, flowers and food contributions for my Mum who is hosting dinner this year.
