Just me and dd here so I get one as well 😁

We have-
Face masks
Bath bomb
Hot chocolates sachet with a bag of marshmallows
New pjs
New outfit (Xmas themed!) For her favourite bear
She gets a bottle of appetiser and I get a mini bottle of champagne.

A new mug each
A hot chocolate set from B&M
Night before Xmas book
Reindeer food
Santa's tray + key
A quick craft activity to pass some time
Chocolate
A Christmas cracker

Mainly just things they would have had/used on Xmas Eve anyway. I used to put more in but they never got used.

I clicked on this just to see the comments moaning about people doing Christmas Eve boxes. Wasn’t disappointed. Grin

🤣🤣
It really does seem to get some people worked up doesn't it!!

AlwaysLatte · 22/11/2022 20:22

Usually warm pyjamas (sort of Christmassy eg red/tartan), a DVD (or nowadays a Prime movie 'token'), a book, hot chocolate with chocolate 'Bomb', silly mug, bath bomb or shower steamers, tiny box of chocolates. Teddies when they were little. We've done it since they were babies and the pyjamas are ones they can use till they grow out of/pass on, books cherished.Nothing we wouldn't buy anyway but it's exciting for them to have it all together. And the emphasis is on downtime, so the bath and story etc is part of that.

AlwaysLatte · 22/11/2022 20:27

I must be a grinch as the thought of all opening Christmas Eve boxes wearing matching Christmas sleepwear makes me cringe
I totally draw the line at matchy matchy pyjamas. Apart from looking ridiculous I would hate visitors to a) think they've got the wrong night to come and wish us as a Happy Christmas as clearly we're ready for bed or b) think they've arrived into some sort of festive sect.

When do we all think Chrismas Eves eve boxes will become a thing?

They've been a thing for years. I'm 36 and we always had new PJs, some sweets and a book/DVD when I was little on Christmas eve.

Here's a thread from 2009 talking about them

Here's one from 2011

Social media I think has made them more seen perhaps, but they've been going for years as a concept.

GG1986 · 22/11/2022 21:53

My 6 year old has a book, hot choc, cookies, stickers, bath bomb, xmas socks. Might put some pjs in too.

You don't want to be OTT. Yet having boxes on Xmas Eve is OTT. So.
Keep it simple at Christmas. Your kids just want you to spend time with them, and some traditions they love.

This!

kessiebird · 22/11/2022 22:11

Something warm to wear in bed. This year Snuddies from Primark. A hot chocolate bomb. DC choose a film to watch together, usually the Polar Express. They are 11 and 16 but still love to hear the jingle bells to signal the Elves have left their Christmas eve treats.

The Elves also leave breakfast on Christmas Eve. This year DD has suggested they will bring macarons. 😋

Xmas eve boxes have been going since WW2 when paper was one of the few things not rationed so a campaign was started to gift books on xmas eve.

But PP was taking the mick claiming there will be the 'eve' of xmas eve boxes which is just silly.

People have to remember this started during turmoil across Europe in multiple countries and a lot of Europe celebrate xmas with things to open on the 24th NOT the 25th like us so its really not unusual at all.

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 22/11/2022 22:23

My kids are all grown up.

December 1st they had

Advent calendars
Winter bedding (reused)
Card making stuff
Paper chain or other diy decs
Christmas story like Jesus’ Christmas Party or Spot, obviously changing as they got bigger
Christmas socks maybe
Christmas pasta (this has caused a bit of Pearl clutching in MN) 😉

Christmas Eve

Pyjamas mainly so they looked half put together in the photos
Family board game (shared)
Later a family puzzle which we still do, it gets done between Christmas and New Year, recently we had a Jane Austen one as one DC was going through an Austen phase
Hot choc stirrers
Mocktails and later cocktails
dvd in olden days

There was probably more stuff some years. Guess what? Are my grown up kids spoiled, unhappy, selfish, grabby? No. They are happy, responsible, good people who love Christmas.
I don’t doubt people can be happy with different traditions or none. Each to their own.

because nowhere I ever heard of celebrates on the 23rd but many cultures celebrate on the 5th 6th, 24th, 25th of December or 6th January... they are all legitimate christmas dates and traditions.

Try and be a little more culturally open minded, there more to the world than just what you know.

ChocChipOwl · 23/11/2022 13:29

Mine are older - 24 and 16 but I still do this. Along with home made advents and piles of presents. What can I say? I like Christmas and make no apology for that

I vary what goes in the Christmas Eve box but this year it will be ...

Pyjamas each
Dressing gown each
Selection of vegan chocolate for one, selection of normal chocolate for the other
Glass Orb light

AlexTheBird · 23/11/2022 13:43

I used to do a Christmas Eve box for my daughter (now 8) but I find a '1st of December' box works better for us now as I want her to be able to enjoy some of things I put in the box for longer than a week. Then she gets more wear out of her Xmas PJs and a new festive jumper and we get more weekends to do the crafty activities that I usually add in. Plus it's a nice way to bring the advent calendars out (and our kindness elves arrive with the box too).

CoffeeLover90 · 23/11/2022 19:44

New PJs (with his favourite characters on), dressing gown, slippers, chocolate and a book.
I also have a 'welcome elf' box. This is on the 1st of December, he brings a Christmas jumper, Christmas PJs and chocolate. That way the jumper and PJs get plenty of use in run up to Christmas.

Holeinthetoad · 23/11/2022 19:46

We do a December box so everything gets a bit more use; the pjs, Christmas mug, activities, advent calendar etc all goes in there

chris Eve they get a bath bomb and a hot chocolate bomb

WithIcePlease · 23/11/2022 19:52

DD's are young adults and I only started Xmas eve boxes in covid because I reckoned we needed all the excitement we could get back then

They have:
PJ's
Bubble tea kit
Gingerbread face masks
Chocolate
Bottle of Buck's Fizz

DosCervezas · 23/11/2022 20:45

Nothing, never done Christmas Eve boxes and don't even think I've heard of it before!
No harm in it, but Idon't see why it's necessary.

ShortColdandGrey · 24/11/2022 17:41

I don't do a Christmas eve box but my mum does for my DD and my DN. I think she just misses doing stockings for kids 😁 I just leave her to it as it makes her happy.

WordtoYoMumma · 24/11/2022 17:43

We usually just do new pyjamas Xmas Eve but we don't need any this year so I am thinking fluffy socks and a mini hot water bottle each.

Theoldwoman · 26/11/2022 10:21
