Christmas Eve boxes? When did this start?

My DS is 23 and my DD is 20 - we've done them since before they went to school , so probavly 19=20 years here .

I used to buy a box from HomeSense /TKMaxx then they'd use them all year to store toys/cards/Sylvanian Family bits etc

We moved from Christmas Eve to Dec 1st a few years ago . But the CEH were a lovely way to prepare for Christmas Day and get them bathed , dressed for bed and ready to sleep (hopefully )

Lets stop the faux naivety about Christmas Eve boxes. Yes i do them for my children which is fine. If you dont, that's fine too.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions 🎄

They weren't a thing when mine were young (now young adults, only saw boxes maybe 8-10 years ago (along with that elf thing) but we did new pj's, made cocoa and read the night before Christmas when tiny, from 5 ish we added the crib service at church (4pm) then from 8&10 they were choristers so midnight mass as well (we went out for dinner between the services) then opened the pjs at 1am!

Christmas Eve boxes? When did this start?

People are so bloody awkward about the word 'box' but the tradition has been going since WW2.

Paper wasn't rationed so it started as a campaign throughout europe to encourage reading since it was one of the few things still easy to do and a lot of europe open gifts on the night of the 24th not the 25th.

People who say 'this didnt exist until a few years ago we just did hot chocolate, PJ, a book but no box' just make themselves look a bit silly because thats exactly want it is regardless of if its in a 'box' or not.

I must have been in a time warp as never heard of it nor done xmas eve presents, ever.

Faberge egg, monogrammed silk pyjamas (pair for each family member), chocolate truffles from Fortnums, original leather-bound editions of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, couple of Diptyque candles and an organic chanteray carrot.

I don't do Christmas Eve boxes, we do a stocking that's opened on Christmas morning.

Christmas Eve it's tradition in ours to get to open a present and officially open the chocolates that have been taunting us, as well as homemade sausage rolls.

I must be a grinch as the thought of all opening Christmas Eve boxes wearing matching Christmas sleepwear makes me cringe 😂 the word PJ's makes me irrationally angry too

Totally agree with you re "PJ's"
It irritates the hell out of me

Poor children - no matching PJ's? They'll be so disappointed

Pjs, hot chocolate and a board game!

I think it’s important to set them up for the harsh realities of the world. Christmas or not.

CloudPop · 26/11/2022 18:21

@amprev

good point. You can't start distilling resilience early enough.

I have a 15 year old, 12 year and twins who are 7, I have been doing a Christmas Eve box since the older two were small, in it I usually put pyjamas, Christmas colouring book and pencil crayons, Gingerbread House making kit/Christmas cookies kit, reindeer food and some snacks for the evening while we watch a Christmas movie together.
