If you can't fit a Christmas tree...

We have moved to a new house this year that has a tiny living room. I mean tiny, we can't even get a 3 seater sofa in here. I'm really struggling to think how we can shoehorn in a Christmas tree. We do have a small Kallax unit that a (very) small tree could stand on top of, and there's a fireplace for a nice garland, but definitely not the lovely tall bushy tree we're used to having.

No space in the hall for a big tree either and we don't have a dining room here. Very first world problems but it's really going to bother me.

Wondering if anyone is similarly afflicted with a ridiculously small living room and what you do, be it tiny trees, pencil trees, something hung on the wall etc.

Lighted twig tree or twig bundle. John Lewis has a LED lit twig bundle for £35. I've got something similar and it's great as an alternative for Xmas.

Have you got wall space?
Google Wall Christmas tree and there are lots of flat options

No wall space really. Unless we took out the kallax but then we'd be able to get a tree in. Maybe that's the answer. There's nowhere else for it to go though!

I would take out the kallax. We have to do similar with a footstool that moves up to our bedroom for December.

lasangya · 16/11/2022 06:15

Mini tree?
Upside down tree from the ceiling?

Greytea · 16/11/2022 06:25

Can you get a small tree that will stand on a table or the Kallax unit?

wewishyouamerrychristmas · 16/11/2022 06:45

Sell the house and move! Only joking. Do you have space for a corner tree?

Yeah I could - no table (and no room for one) but we could put one on the kallax. Is there such a thing as a really nice, actually festive/not depressing looking little tree? I just imagine this sort of thing which doesn't fill me with joy.

I'm leaning towards trying to find a different home for the kallax but struggling to think of where on earth it could go. It's not exactly a big house.

You can get really slim trees, I saw one in M&S last week. Or you can get 'half trees' for the wall.

I've got this one that I put on a chest in the kitchen. It's a decent size.. big enough to put lights and a few baubles on. Small enough to go on top of a unit. Looks pretty real.

I wish we could! Hoping we'll only be here a few years, and never ever again will I buy a house with such a tiny living space.

No usable corners, unless the kallax goes. Even then it would need to be a pretty slim tree to fit in.

Right here is a very badly drawn on floor plan. The thing with a "K" is the kallax. The triangular thing near the door is a corner cabinet that we definitely can't move, and the door is actually a bit further up that wall and just wouldn't leave enough room for a tree. The thing on the other side of the chimney breast is the TV at an angle on a unit that pretty much fills the chimney breast recess. The chimney breast itself is a lot wider than it looks here. The square thing in front of the window is a storage pouf thing. Can't put a tree there as it would block the TV. The kallax corner really is the only place it could go I think.

I would love to strangle the builder, it's such a badly designed house.

We had this in our last house. We had a mini tree on top of a side board and went all out on other decorations. Lots of fairy lights and Christmassy touches round the house.

A few years ago I was given a tiny Christmas tree in a pot. This year it's big enough to decorate so we'll put baubles and lights on it but it will be in the garden outside the kitchen door so we can see it from inside - we have a very small kitchen diner.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 16/11/2022 06:58

Do you have a car? Stick the Kallax in the boot for the month of December.

😂I do have a car, but surprisingly I need to be able to use the boot.

I think your options are;

  1. A small tree on top of the Kallax
  1. Move the Kallax elsewhere (bedroom? The DC's play kitchen has to move every December, to make way for the tree)
  1. Do you need to get into the storage triangle unit? Would it be possible to move the second sofa at an angle, so it was in front of it, creating some floorspace to the left, between the Kallax and the sofa?
SpacePotato · 16/11/2022 07:04

Could you move the pouf elsewhere, turn couch two round so it's under the window then either put tree by the door or move kallax next to the door so tree can go in corner.
Pouf could maybe go in middle of room like a coffee table.

Greytea · 16/11/2022 07:05

I’d get a real tree, a small one, and put it on the Kallax. I do it myself, out of choice, even though we could have a bigger one. We get a small real tree and stand it on a table.

Snoken · 16/11/2022 07:05

The Kallax will have to go I think, and then get a smallish tree in that corner. You can alway just take it apart and store it under a bed. If that's not possible, move the Kallax to where the foot stool is under the window, and have the footstool in middle of the room as a coffee table, that will free up space where the Kallax was, but it might be too crowded.

Vebrithien · 16/11/2022 07:05
  1. Get a half tree and put it on the hearth, against the chimney breast
Overthebow · 16/11/2022 07:06

Kallax in your bedroom for a bit then tree in Kallax space?

We couldn't see the TV unfortunately if we put the sofa under the window. You can only see the TV from one side of the other sofa as the chimney breast protrudes too far (more so than it looks on the floorplan).

The triangle storage unit is the drinks cabinet. It's VITAL we have access to that 😂

This was going to be my suggestion. It can be a bit cramped for Christmas, its part of the fun!
