Does everyone get their kids advent calendars? We never had them as kids. Does everyone have one nowadays?

Yes, my DC have advent calendars - a chocolate one each, DDs also has a Smiggle one & DS has a Pokémon one.
I had them as a child, though they were the picture ones initially until the chocolate versions became popular in the late 80s.

My daughter is 4 and absolutely loves hers! We had a Playmobil one last year which was great fun, and this year she has a Barbie one! We also all get a chocolate one!!

tunnocksreturns2019 · 15/11/2022 22:38

Yes a chocolate one each, plus we’ve had a Playmobil one on the go for 10 years now, taken it to Scotland three times and no pieces missing! Added a Lego Harry Potter one a couple of years ago, also reused every year. They make me happy. Oh, and the DC 🤣

Openmouthinsertfood · 15/11/2022 23:51

We had one between us 4 when I was little. Picture ones (Alas, was long ago. Lol).
These days I've done a fill your own. Bit of choc, and something small like a nail varnish, or a tea towel, stuff that will get used.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 16/11/2022 01:28

You're never too old for an advent calendar! I still have one in my 40s 😁
The two kids (now teenagers) always still have one too.

imSatanhonest · 16/11/2022 02:29

My eldest DD is 30. I still have to get her a bloody advent calendar every year 🙄😊

sarge89 · 16/11/2022 03:38

We have a beautiful fabric one that my mum made several years ago. We just put chocolate in each pocket every year. DSs usually have a card one too (just pictures, nothing fancy).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/11/2022 03:46

Dds are long grown up. I never had any Advent calendar as a kid, so I buy myself a nice, corny little-pictures one every year.,
Found this one yesterday.🎄

Mine loved the little window one ,and really appreciated the little pictures until mil got her cheap cadburys ones.

Since we branched out into play mobile, Legos..all excellent set's.

This year they have cookies and cream Hershey

bushtailadventures · 16/11/2022 05:56

We have loads 😊

DGD has a refillable fabric one I made for her, has chocolate coins in on week days and lindt bears/smartie things on weekends.

In the kitchen/diner (my room mostly) we have picture ones on all the cabinet doors. I save them and flatten them out through the year, we, dgd and I, take turns to open them. I bought 2 new ones this year though, I found a Thelwell one just for me 😁

DappledThings · 16/11/2022 10:49

Always had one as a child decades ago but one for the family, not one each and it wasn't a chocolate one.

Keep meaning to make my own refillable one so I can have one that actually covers Advent rather than the month of December. Might just make it this year!

reluctantbrit · 16/11/2022 11:59

I alwyas had a. chocolate one until I moved out.

DD got the first one with 18 months, pictures only. I think I bought the fabric tree shaped one the year after.

We did also playmobil, Lego friends, beauty, jewellery over the years and we normally shared the chocolate one.

This year DH and I will get a more posh chocolate one, DD sticks with a Body Shop one and get her own chocolate.

Ive had an advent calendar as long as ai can remember and I'm 54. Everyone should have one.

Dinoteeth · 16/11/2022 12:36

Yes we have advent calendars.

I'm surprised you've never had one, not even a disposable cardboard one with doors that open and a picture inside - how exciting to get a picture of a star or a Christmas pudding 😂

I've done Lego ones and other toy ones, but find the bits are never really played with.

This year I'm doing actual lego sets, one new, one handed down. Print out the instructions, and put it into 24 little bags. And hopefully they'll have something they want to play with at the end of it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/11/2022 12:39

I let DS choose a chocolate one, and I buy myself a beautiful paper one, usually Richard Sellmer.

ShortColdandGrey · 16/11/2022 13:38

Yes we all get an advent calendar. This year me and my husband have the Exit the game one and I can't wait to open it 😀

Ahh my DH had that one last year, really enjoyed it & DD helped.

JenniferBooth · 16/11/2022 14:36

I always had a pictures one back in the 80s as a kid. Open the door and saw a Christmas pudding or a snowman or a candle behind it. Smothered with glitter which would end up everywhere the minute i picked it up

Igmum · 16/11/2022 21:41

We shared a picture one back in the 1970s. It was so exciting opening the doors. This year I've got DD16 a bath bomb one, a mini Christmassy bath bomb every day. It smells absolutely glorious

Dinoteeth · 16/11/2022 23:04

I'm glad I'm not alone recalling the excitement of opening the door to get a picture.

DS was going on about his advent calender, 'I want ....I want' I told him if he wasn't careful he'd get a 1980s one with doors and pictures, he was 'that's sad'

NCcoziwannaNC · 16/11/2022 23:17

Yes chocolate ones, they normally end up with 2 each as an elderly neighbour loves to buy them one. But bless him its always like 4 x barbie ones or 4 x paw patrol. My 17 year old loves it 😂

ShowOfHands · 16/11/2022 23:20

We have them in this house. Picture ones. Nobody here thinks they're sad fortunately. They're a much anticipated and loved part of the festivities.

xalo · 16/11/2022 23:33

Picture ones here always.I always feel so sad looking at the blank empty boxes of chocolate ones.

reluctantbrit · 17/11/2022 06:59

That's why I always close the doors again. Drives DH crazy but I can't stand the open flaps and empty boxes. I prefer the picture on the box.

QuietYou · 17/11/2022 07:09

I had picture ones as a child.
Mine have refillable ones, plus an old playmobil one that we bring out every year.
Last year I sent DD a beauty one to University which she enjoyed.
