Over 30 years ago my aunt. (Who died a couple of years later age 42) bought me and my siblings a child size porcelain mug. They each had a cartoon drawing on the front and a small corresponding teddy inside. So mine said "I'm a little Angel" and had an Angel doll. The other two said Vampire and Monkey. They all fit our personalities too. I was very quiet.

My dd's would definitely not appreciate them as much as I did however I've looked and cannot see anything similar. I'd love to see a photo of one again.

What's your story?

My roller boots. I never had them off my feet. The sense of freedom I got, whizzing round our village on them, knocking on for my friends, knowing where all the smoothest bits of pavement were. I dream about roller skating these days and always wake up happy when I do ❤️

I got a bottle of Matey bubble bath every year Smile

Us too — until someone spilled an entire bottle of it on a new beige (it was the 80s 😂) carpet. No Matey for us after that…

I remember quite a few of my presents - I adored Christmas. One year my younger siblings got bikes (I already had one), and I got a big box filled with lots and lots of small presents. I definitely thought I had the better end of the deal! I remember it included a crystal growing kit which was a huge excitement.

I actually preferred the little but interesting presents more generally. I remember lots of the quirky little things my mum put in stockings - puzzles, a gyroscope, lollipops with fruit preserved inside them, little soaps, stuff like that. My parents didn’t go overboard with Christmas (no Mr Frosty or Teddy Ruxpin for me) — but we always got really nice thoughtful things. “Big” presents were usually something like a big Lego set; I remember getting books, craft kits, things like that.

Mine is also a bike.
I loved it and rode it hundreds of miles. I was in my early teens at the time which means technically it still fits me now. It’s in the shed as I can bear to get rid of it but it really needs some love.

Ponderingwindow · 08/11/2022 14:34

A loom
it was fairly small and made of plastic, but I was so excited and did so many projects.

The A la carte kitchen 😍

I remember wanting one so badly….I thought I’d actually be able to ‘cook’ on it and had visions of going in to my mum and dads room on a Sunday morning having cooked them a full English 😂

needless to say it didn’t quite work out like that but I loved it all the same!

Radox bubble bath. Hard to imagine it's so cheap now

I remember getting a Girl's World.

I was convinced that I wouldn't get one but there it was under the tree on Christmas morning so probably the best sort of present.

Have gone on to have absolutely zero interest in hair and makeup though - obviously traumatised by the blue and green eyeshadow crayons.

That's hilarious! My mam told me that Santa wouldn't give me girls world because it would give me nightmares! She told me that Santa didn't approve Shock I saved up and when I had enough money the local Argos had sold out..... Shock

Mr frosty, then a fame make up kit another year. Then as a teenager my dad got me an Elizabeth Arden make set in a beautiful carry case and it was such a surprise as so unlike him!!

Lmgify · 08/11/2022 14:49

A hot wheel set. Me and my sister absolutely loved it

Longwhiskers · 08/11/2022 14:51

The big yellow teapot toy! From the 80s made by the bluebird company I think. I’m eyeing them up on eBay for my daughter’s Xmas present. For a few years on the trot I got a lovely flat cardboard sweet shop, you made it yourself by slotting in the shelves etc. And it had tiny jars with hundreds and thousands type sweets.

A boy cabbage patch doll. The original type with the hard head. I still have him at 43 years old with his original clothes but no shoes. I won’t part with him. He’s got to be at least 35 years old.

Redambergreenforgo · 08/11/2022 15:21

My great aunt bought me a Terry's chocolate orange and a satsuma every year it was a lovely tradition that meant alot and I missed when she passed in my teens.
Roller skates were a big hit we didn't have much money and so I didn't expect them. Unfortunately it snowed that Christmas so I spent ages clearing the snow so I could actually use them in our tiny yard. But it was worth it.

I got a pound puppy. I'd wanted one for ages. I was so happy to get it.

emptythelitterbox · 08/11/2022 16:06

A microscope and a horse

Flutterbybudget · 08/11/2022 16:07

Got a few
A Grumpy Carebear - that my mother hunted for weeks to get
Lord of the Rings paperback - age 10 from my uncle - read it in 3 days and still my favourite book ever
and a golfing umbrella, which was the only thing I wanted that year

oldperson1 · 08/11/2022 16:11

I remember one year I had a tiny tears doll ( yes I’m pretty ancient) and my dad had bought me lovely wrist watch and put it round the doll as a belt .
We wasn’t very well off so it’s was a lovely surprise

GoldenPineapple88 · 08/11/2022 16:14

A Sony Walkman, c1988, with loads of tapes.
I was utterly thrilled with it and it had a belt clip so I made sure I clipped it to the front of my jeans to look cool and so people could see it at all times - looking back, it was bloody massive so you couldn't have missed it 😂

I loved it so much. Even the terrible battery life and even worse fast forward/rewind.

A remote control robot that was nearly as tall as me. The robot itself was inflatable and you stood it in a stand on wheels. . I used to hide behind a bush and send it along the pavement after people when they got off the bus Grin
This was in the early 80's. I never saw another one or heard of anyone else who had one. My dad bought it me but god knows where from.
Another good one was a coke bottle radio.

JennyForeigner · 08/11/2022 17:15

An igloo.

My dad was always very clever about building things, and we lived in a house with a lovely long garden stretching down a hill.

One Christmas it snowed hugely and collected to 3-4 feet at the bottom. He built a proper igloo with bricks made by packing snow into a washing basket, a window made of ice and a tunnel entrance under the snow.

Absolutely magical.

The joy this would bring my son!
