Christmas food ... where are you food shopping?

Where's everyone doing their Christmas food shop?

Last year I ordered online at Morrisons (just meats, desserts, sides etc., then I do the rest at the supermarket) and remember being a bit disappointed with a few items.

The previous year I did M&S, I've just gone on to do a comparison and the prices are massively higher than Morrisons, though I guess I don't mind paying if it's a lot better quality.

Where's your recommendations mumsnetters?

I get our meat from the local butcher, some bits from M&S usually deserts and party food and the rest just in our normal Sainsburys order.

Tiredmumno1 · 13/10/2022 10:23

We will be going to M & S for most of it, with top ups from Tesco/Sainsburys.

Moro93 · 13/10/2022 10:55

We tried M&S a few years ago but were quite disappointed, but we did continue to get our desserts from there. The selection isn't great this year though.

We normally just buy some type of roast from from whichever Supermarket (normally beef, we don't like turkey).

This year I'm considering food to order from Morrisons, as I wanted something a bit nicer but not hugely expensive, so I'd be interested in anyone's experience with it. Which items were disappointing OP?

Queenofheart · 13/10/2022 11:17

Yes same here, will do an order online for pick up and do the rest at the supermarket.

@Moro93 I found cauliflower cheese a disappointment, bit watery, the spiced red cabbage wasn't great, can't remember what else. Though I was happy with all the joints and veggie dishes so I think I will order from there again, though there doesn't seem to be as many options this year, sides and desserts so might do M&S for those but get joints from Morrisons.

Pork shoulder from our local butcher and everything else from Aldi. Ive had no complaints about quality yet!

Highamite · 13/10/2022 11:24

Ocado as usual I am a hopeless sucker for them plus they delivered week in week out through the pandemic and for that they have my undying loyalty 😁

gogohmm · 13/10/2022 11:26

Lidl, as always, nearest shop

grayhairdontcare · 13/10/2022 11:26

I've ordered my food from M&S.
I save for it throughout the year

SquigglePigs · 13/10/2022 11:32

We get the meat from a butcher (beef is already in the freezer!). Then a main delivery from Waitrose and topping up from Tesco and/or Sainsbury's - whichever I can face going into!

mrchandlerbong · 13/10/2022 11:43

I get my party food from M&S
Turkey from butcher
Then cheeses and other bits normally Tesco or asda

newfence · 13/10/2022 12:00

We get our meat online from Farmison.

RobertaTheRobot · 13/10/2022 12:13

Aldi or Lidl for the bulk of it. Especially cold meats and cheeses, the veg, lebkushen, mince pies, any alcohol ect

Iceland for a few freezer staples for the xmas period (stuff to make fakeaways for quick easy dinners when we're out and about and one or two buffet type bits- the breaded chicken strips are especially good, 100% breast fillet and lovely cold!)

And then probably m&s for a few more special nice treat bits that we fancy.

CamdenLurker · 13/10/2022 12:29

DH was telling me he read an article where someone compared last years M&S Christmas food bill to the same this year and the prices had increased by 43% 😵

I'll buy our meat from the Butcher and everything else from Aldi, I will go a good few days before Christmas Day though in the hope of picking up everything in one shop rather than trotting around several supermarkets, DD1(17) will help write a menu soon and she will also help with the cooking and prep, I'll make my own cauliflower cheese, braised red cabbage and pigs in blankets.

In the past I've tried deserts from Sainsbury's and M&S BUT they are usually disappointing so I'll bake/make some this year. As long as I can get organised it should be fine.

What's everyones thoughts on the 19p veg the supermarkets have offered over the last few years? I'm wondering if that'll be on offer this year or if those days are well and truly in the past!

NCAutumn · 13/10/2022 12:33

The rotten turkeys from Aldi were enough to make me avoid them forever at Christmas. Wasn't some of M&S meat rancid the same year?

I stick with Asda now

MissyB1 · 13/10/2022 12:35

All meat from the butchers. Then some bits from M&S and some from Aldi. We don’t tend to buy ready prepared stuff so I make my own trifle, cake etc…And Dh likes to prepare the Veggies.

gretr · 13/10/2022 12:36

Waitrose as I can always get a delivery. We get meat/seafood/cheese locally, but I’m a sucker for their party food!

caringcarer · 13/10/2022 12:49

I get turkey crown from Aldi, chocolate stuff from Morrisons, I buy a couple of things each week in December and pofiterole stack and Shortbread from M&S. Large gammon for Xmas Eve I just look about until I see a nice shaped one. Hot snack food for Boxing day buffet from a mix of Aldi, Morrisons and Asda. DH is veggie and insists on getting 1 or 2 of his food items from each shop.

Mrsfussypants1 · 13/10/2022 13:04

@NCAutumn Asda had rancid Turkeys last year too, I remember the headlines I think all the other supermarkets had a horror story about their turkeys last year.

Dh has 2 weeks off for christmas, I have 3 days off starting 23rd so we devide the shopping. Dh will go and get the veg and other bits probably from Asda or sainsburys, we also have an Aldi and M&S in out town but he's not a fan of the ques in there. I'll pick up the meats, park food and deserts on the 22nd after work (I bit the bullet and ordered this morning). I'll probably pop into all of the other stores over a few evenings after work to pick up bits that catch my eye. Once the Christmas food like pates and cheeses hit the shelves they normally have good dates on so I pick them up as I see them and put them in the fridge.

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 13/10/2022 13:16

I'm going to Asda this year only because I have £60 in vouchers from helping in a covid research programme. I'll put that towards my Christmas shop

TheWoollybacksWife · 13/10/2022 13:32

I'll get my meat from the butcher and I usually freeze part cooked veg and roasties sometime in November along with some sausage meat stuffing balls so they are ready to just cook on the day.

I'm hoping Aldi will be stocking their giant Fererro Rocher style ice cream bombe again because we've had that for the last two years and it's been lovely.

I'll be making our Christmas puddings and cake next week and once I have room in the freezer I'll make either a Yule log or a chocolate chestnut cake.

We buy 3 or 4 boxes of party food but no particular brand loyalty - I'll see what takes our fancy from any of the supermarkets.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 13/10/2022 13:38

I like Morrison's for their fruit and veg and for their fish and red meat. I wouldn't buy poultry, desserts, fancy side dishes etc. from them though. That's not where they excel.

DevaleraSpawnOfSatan · 13/10/2022 13:44

Farmshop

Tesco

Sainsburys

Waitrose

Possibly M&S though it is a bit of a schlep.

I thought that when I looked this morning, sky high and I won't buy there now out of principle!

I'll defo be making my own Cauli cheese this year. Won't be baking though, just never seem to be able to make it work haha.

Never heard of the 19p veg ??

Wow I will definitely be looking out for the FR ice cream bombe when I go in now :)
