Pies for Christmas dinner

We're probably hosting my MIL & FIL this Christmas. We have a tiny kitchen and my FIL is also celiac. My husband and I are vegetarian. So all the different dietary requirements isn't easy in such a small kitchen.

We have had pies from Pieminster before which are delicious and I've found out they now do Gluten free ones.

How would you feel if you were served a pie for Christmas with all the trimmings? I have a small oven which could cook the 4 individual pies (I'd get us all GF to avoid cross contamination) and then my bigger oven could cook the veg.

Sounds great!

SkirridHill · 27/09/2022 18:50

I'd honestly be delighted but then, I bloody love a pie.

ProlifiInProfanity · 27/09/2022 18:51

I think it’s fine.
As you & DH are veggies I don’t imagine your PIL would expect a full on roast Turkey. Presumably they will just be happy to be with you to share the day, if they really want Turkey then they have the option to decline the invite.

usernamenotaccepted · 27/09/2022 18:52

Pies are an excellent idea. I've been wondering what to do that makes a nice change so I'm going to do the same.

Timeforabiscuit · 27/09/2022 18:52

Sounds great especially with all the trimmings, braised red cabbage would do it for me!

RagzRebooted · 27/09/2022 18:53

I would definitely eat that. DD has chicken nuggets for Christmas Dinner, as she hates roasts!

chilliesandspices · 27/09/2022 18:53

Their gluten free pastry is delicious. I eat gluten but there was a nice sounding GF veggie one in Sainsburys so I tried it then bought it every couple of weeks. Sadly they haven't had it in stock for well over a year Sad

gogohmm · 27/09/2022 18:53

Not for me, I would do a coeliac friendly veggie roast meal . All the trimmings are gluten free anyway (obviously with correct gravy) if they wont accept veggie, do a meal for 2 roast and similar for you.

Pies are for After Christmas in my mine, just me

MarshmallowsOnToast · 27/09/2022 18:54

I would be over the moon!

princessbear80 · 27/09/2022 19:03

Sounds lovely. Turkey is the worst bit of Christmas dinner!

ProlifiInProfanity · 27/09/2022 19:07

Just been off to Google these gluten free veggie pies, pretty pricey! So, if they are anything like my IL’s, I’d have to drop it into conversation that they cost more than a Turkey. They do look nice though.

CPL593H · 27/09/2022 19:08

I am a turkey lover and I think it sounds like a great idea.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/09/2022 19:11

I'd be ecstatic. I'm vegetarian and I don't like sprouts, and my Christmas main course is usually carrots and peas.

BeanyBops · 27/09/2022 19:12

We do exactly this every year and it started when I was vegetarian! I only came on this thread to say don't bother with anything less than pieminister too. We love it. Serve with all the trimmings.

Only thing I'm not sure about is whether they have a gluten free and vegetarian one, but you could check their website and order direct if it's available but super niche (although you might need to buy lots of pies). Alternatively they have a shop in Bristol if you are nearby.

lookingformyleopard · 27/09/2022 19:12

Pieminister gluten free pies are genuinely delicious, I wouldn't want one for Christmas dinner though! There are gluten free nut roasts available, would that not be better? The thought of pastry as well as all the rest of a big roast just seems a bit much to me.
If you don't cook meat and they have to have meat, then I guess it will at least be tasty.

Chewbecca · 27/09/2022 19:15

I would be disappointed, you can have a pie any day of the year but Christmas Day is the day for the best roast of the year.

Floralnomad · 27/09/2022 19:18

I’d be hugely disappointed with a pie for Christmas dinner - I’d rather stay at home and cook my own roast - not necessarily turkey .

BeanyBops · 27/09/2022 19:19

OP I think people are missing the part where you say you are hosting and vegetarian.

Perhaps you could tell your guests that you are serving some delicious pies with traditional trimmings but if they don't want that they are welcome to bring their own meat item (and cook it)?

CollieWobble22 · 27/09/2022 19:20

Sounds amazing!
You enjoy!

We're having homemade cornish pasties for Christmas Dinner x

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/09/2022 19:20

I'd love a Christmas pie.

Erictheavocado · 27/09/2022 19:29

Apart from the veggie aspect, I don't see this as much different to serving up a beef/turkey/salmon wellington for Christmas dinner. I would not have an issue with this at all - I would be grateful that someone else is hosting, to be honest. Have fun OP.

Onionbhajisandwich · 27/09/2022 19:39

We had home made chicken pie last year for Christmas dinner and will most likely do it again this year.

FrankTheThunderbird · 27/09/2022 19:42

The trimmings are the best bit of Christmas Dinner (especially pigs in blankets). I love pie. What time shall I be there ? (I'm happy to bring my own pigs) Grin

SalviaOfficinalis · 27/09/2022 19:44

Sounds excellent. The whole point of Xmas dinner is all the trimmings and being together.

They can have a normal roast dinner any Sunday (or indeed any day) if they feel they’ve missed out

QuietYou · 27/09/2022 19:48

I'd feel swindled of my Boxing Day leftover Christmas dinner pie, however I'm not coming so that doesn't matter.

What do you and PIL usually eat for Christmas dinner? Are they expecting meat?
When I was vegetarian I just had everything except the meat with more cauliflower cheese/cheesy leeks than everyone else. It could all be gluten free if you use cornflour.
