Pies for Christmas dinner

We're probably hosting my MIL & FIL this Christmas. We have a tiny kitchen and my FIL is also celiac. My husband and I are vegetarian. So all the different dietary requirements isn't easy in such a small kitchen.

We have had pies from Pieminster before which are delicious and I've found out they now do Gluten free ones.

How would you feel if you were served a pie for Christmas with all the trimmings? I have a small oven which could cook the 4 individual pies (I'd get us all GF to avoid cross contamination) and then my bigger oven could cook the veg.

Mmmmmm

heidi pie!! Best pie ever invented!!

BanannaSplitz · 27/09/2022 19:56

I’d be disappointed

Craftybodger · 27/09/2022 20:19

Sounds lovely for any other day but that wouldn’t be a Christmas Day meal for me or mine, sorry.

QuebecBagnet · 27/09/2022 21:13

I’d do a nut roast. Gluten free and vegi.

Dilbertian · 27/09/2022 21:22

Would there be gravy? Lovely, rich, flavoursome gravy? That's the important thing, really.

Excellent pies, with roasties and greens (red cabbage counts), and lashings of lovely gravy. Star

If be perfectly happy with that.
Better check with your guests though - people can be funny about Christmas 🥴

Sounds great especially with all the trimmings, braised red cabbage would do it for me!

That's my Christmas sorted!

FairytaleofNewHampshire · 27/09/2022 21:36

It sounds lovely, but I'm vegetarian so no turkey wouldn't bother me.
This year, I'm making a Cauliflower cheese filo pie for us.

Always4Brenner · 27/09/2022 21:38

Great idea as might be having Christmas dinner would you believe with stbx Christmas Eve (lunchtime) can I borrow this idea pie and get a lovely steak one.

Arenanewbie · 27/09/2022 21:57

I wouldn’t like it much but I don’t like pies but I would happily compensate with roasted potatoes and carrots. However the question is what expectations your in laws have. Do they still expect you to serve them meat? it’s rude of course but some people still do. Do they consider pies as something unusual/festive or do they have them often? I know my parents would be very disappointed with pies and would comment openly.

Plump82 · 28/09/2022 10:33

Thanks for all your responses.

I really don't like nut roast and know my FIL wouldn't be impressed with that.
For the pies, I'd get them meat ones. I'd just make sure all were gluten free - good to know the GF are tasty.
My PIL aren't overly fussed with no turkey. Past years she's done Salmon En Croute and similar.
There will definitely be braised cabbage along with all the traditional trimmings. And tonnes of gravy!!

2 years ago I did a veggie and meat Christmas dinner for us and there just wasn't enough room in my oven for everything. So I think pies will be a good alternative.
@Mykittensmittens the Heidi is amazing isn't it.

Sounds great! But we don't eat turkey and id much rather have a pie than a nut roast!

Malleus123 · 29/09/2022 16:22

Pie with all the trimmings !!!! Thats it....im DEF doing this !!! 🎅

Summertimesunshineandfizz · 29/09/2022 16:45

I’d be very disappointed with a bought pie, but a really special homemade one packed with Christmassy vegetables, chestnuts, Stilton and beautifully decorated so it seemed special’ not just something I could have bunged in the oven any day would be different and very much appreciated.

Trinity65 · 29/09/2022 17:00

Don't see anything wrong with this

Jellybean23 · 29/09/2022 17:06

Just being invited by our kids for Christmas lunch would be treat enough for me. As long as there was Yorkshire pudding too😁

NoDairyNoProblem · 29/09/2022 19:08

It’s lovely that you are trying to cater for everyone regardless of the restrictions. I bet it’s a great day!

Greensleeves · 29/09/2022 19:10

I'll be honest, I'd be gutted to be served a bought-in, gluten-free pie for Christmas dinner. It's a meal we look forward to all year and it's important. If I really couldn't manage to cook fresh turkey, I'd get some good-quality sliced meat and have that with the hot gravy.

GettingStuffed · 30/09/2022 18:28

These aren't your bog standard pies so I think they have the luxury you normally get with a turkey

Plump82 · 30/09/2022 19:19

I agree. And the fact thy sell it them in their restaurant, you wouldn't describe that as a shop bought pie.

In my opinion a pre made pie sounds a whole lot nicer than sliced meat and gravy, which besides anything my husband and I couldn't have due to being vegetarian.

I'm sure I could rustle up Yorkshire puddings. Although my attempt at gluten free ones were awful!

Oh yummy! A Chicken and cranberry pie with walnuts or chestnuts rolled into the pastry with a couple of pigs in blankets and stuffing and roast potatoes sounds amazing. I might do pie now, but make my own 🥧

TheProvincialLady · 30/09/2022 19:29

We are vegetarian and have had home made Christmas pies in the past. Chestnuts, cranberries, roasted parsnips, Stilton, hot water crust….delicious!

InFiveMins · 30/09/2022 19:39

I'd love a pie for Christmas dinner. In fact I might suggest it this year Grin sounds delicious!!
