Pies for Christmas dinner

We're probably hosting my MIL & FIL this Christmas. We have a tiny kitchen and my FIL is also celiac. My husband and I are vegetarian. So all the different dietary requirements isn't easy in such a small kitchen.

We have had pies from Pieminster before which are delicious and I've found out they now do Gluten free ones.

How would you feel if you were served a pie for Christmas with all the trimmings? I have a small oven which could cook the 4 individual pies (I'd get us all GF to avoid cross contamination) and then my bigger oven could cook the veg.

Love pieminster! So I'd be thrilled 😁

I agree. And the fact thy sell it them in their restaurant, you wouldn't describe that as a shop bought pie.

In my opinion a pre made pie sounds a whole lot nicer than sliced meat and gravy, which besides anything my husband and I couldn't have due to being vegetarian.

Yes, I appreciate that YOU will be more than happy with the pie - but your OP asked "how would you feel", so that is the question I answered. Christmas dinner, for me and my family, is important, and a reheated gluten-free pie ain't it.

If you've made up your mind that it's fine because you'll be happy with it, then why did you bother asking for our opinions? Confused

Chill! No need to get so antsy over a pie!

I wouldn't be happy without the full works in Christmas day tbh, however I would not accept an invitation to a vegetarian's house for dinner that day for that reason. I would assume that they are not expecting meat at all and would be delighted with the pie.

twanmever · 30/09/2022 20:53

If it was a Pieminister pie I'd be ecstatic!

Vinylloving · 30/09/2022 21:07

Yes to pie, it's amazing with roast accompaniments!

SmudgeButt · 20/11/2022 15:23

You mean you wouldn't be serving a whole turkey? Or ham??

What time are you serving and can you post me directions please?!!?!?!? Will bring my own GF pie to bung in with the rest.

geraniumsandsunshine · 20/11/2022 21:35

Filling, warm and easy. It's a yes from me

wowsaidtheowl · 20/11/2022 21:38

Anna Jones has some lovely Christmas pie recipes - we make one every year. Yum!

Aftersevens · 19/12/2022 09:40

Bloody delicious. I love pie.

XmasElf10 · 19/12/2022 10:38

Pies are delicious, this would be a great solution for me!

emmathedilemma · 19/12/2022 13:14

I'm happy with a pie any day of the year!!

Taxanimal · 20/12/2022 19:10

Bloody marvellous. Stuff the turkey, I say.

AlwaysLatte · 20/12/2022 19:12

I would be fine with whatever was served, but I'd be even happier with a nut roast!

Pourmeanotherwine · 20/12/2022 19:14

I'd be happy, but I'm not a huge Turkey fan.

Dontsayyouloveme · 20/12/2022 19:14

That’s what we have now every year! It’s basically a Xmas dinner but with pie, even down to the bread sauce 🤤🤤🤤

I'm sure I could rustle up Yorkshire puddings. Although my attempt at gluten free ones were awful!

This recipe has worked incredibly for me after a few failed attempts with other methods.

Saz12 · 20/12/2022 22:59

Honestly, the Big Festive Traditional Meal is v important to me. So if I were being hosted by someone who I thought was unlikely to do that, I’d be buying turkey for later in the holidays. Id then be able to really enjoy my Christmas Day meal & Id not care when I had the Full Turkey (so long as I had it!). I know it sounds rude and ungrateful, I’d never let on you hosts nor think badly, but everyone has the thing they love about Christmas and that’s one of mine.

Therefore Id prefer if my host told me theyd be serving amazing pies in advance, then be very happy with it.

BertaHoon · 20/12/2022 23:07

I'd want some mash with it too! Even if doing the trimmings and roasties I'd still want some mash.

Good choice! I was veggie for many years and would much prefer a pie over a nut roast!

Pie, mash and all the trimmings!

mackthepony · 20/12/2022 23:11

I'd be a happy woman

Twoshoesnewshoes · 20/12/2022 23:22

Sounds wonderful

declutteringmymind · 20/12/2022 23:36

Just put the veggie Christmas pie in the freezer. It's actually vegan if I don't egg wash it.

BCBird · 21/12/2022 07:11

I would ask them. Will they be expecting meat? If so you can cook it the day before. Less stress too. I don't eat gluten, have seen those pies but thought they look a bit expensive. Might give them a go.

icanwearwhatiwant · 21/12/2022 07:20

I'm in, I'd love a pie for Christmas Day, especially if mashed potatoes were part of the trimmings.
But sadly I'm not invited. You've got a real mixture of responses here but at the end of the day only the people who are invited actually count so maybe ask them what they think.

Plump82 · 21/12/2022 07:57

Just thought I'd give an update.
Decided against the pies as the ones I was planning on buying contain barley and my MIL can't tolerate barley.
So I'm making a nut roast which I did a trial of and was delicious and the meat eaters are happy to have. I've ordered some fancy pigs in blankets for them!
@BCBird they're not cheap but they are very tasty.
We've decided to order the pies for just us to have on New Year's day seeing as steak pie then is tradition up here anyway!
