TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 14/09/2022 18:15

How are we friends/related?

KalaniM · 14/09/2022 18:18

What are they interested in?

generic gift would be cashmere scarf/ gloves in a safe shade of blue!

midgetastic · 14/09/2022 18:21

Nothing please

MirandaWest · 14/09/2022 18:24

I’m in my late 40s. If someone were going to spend that much on me I hope they’d ask me what I wanted. There are many things I’d love but equally many things I’d hate so it’s much better to ask.

What is a safe shade of blue? If I was given even a cashmere scarf in navy or pastel blue I wouldn't wear it. The donee might even be anti cashmere.
Just goes to show generic presents are not a great idea, OP.
Think about what the person is interested in or likes, we are all different!

Devo1818 · 14/09/2022 18:25

I saw on another thread you can get ancestry kits where you find out your heritage from a saliva sample. I thought that looked really cool.

I'm late 30s so not your target market but I also like the look of those electric throws - Dreamland?

Or an extremely posh bottle of booze.

Tomorrowisalatterday · 14/09/2022 18:26

I am early 40s but I am just in a phase where I hate stuff and am trying to get rid of things and make my house tidy.

I have asked my DH for consumables only - last year he got me truffle mustard and craft gin, I was very happy

YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse · 14/09/2022 18:31

Electric throws and scarves and gloves? I'm in my 40s, not heading into retirement!

Trying to think what I'd like...

Nice make up or voucher for make up
Massage/facial
Necklace or earrings
Bottle of nice champagne which i would never treat myself to

mam0918 · 14/09/2022 18:37

Like anything it depends on the person.

Some of the 40-50 women I know would like:
Good band wellies/walking boots
Outdoor clothing
Nice cheese board and cheese
Resteraunt vouchers
Costa cups
Jewellery

But its all unique to the indervidual, some I know dont like to go out so vouchers and walking gear is useless, others are fussy about Jewellery, some have food intolarence so wouldnt want cheese etc...

lifewithme · 14/09/2022 18:37

My mum she is not into make up, perfume, baths etc candles, jewellery has no real hobbies. Doesnt drink. Walks dog.

My step mum very active like to keep fit runs daily.

jackstini · 14/09/2022 18:39

I'm 50

No 'stuff' - unless consumable and you know they love it and will use it - my best ones have been a quality steak hamper, my favourite wine/candles/hand wash/perfume

Experiences are far better imo:

Spa days
Restaurant voucher
Wine tasting
Afternoon tea
Hotel stay
Activity you know they would enjoy

I'd personally not be pleased with a cashmere scarf - they make me too hot, itchy and are a pain to wash! But get that others might like them

woodhill · 14/09/2022 18:40

Cashmere cardigan or gloves and scarf sound good then or a new dressing gown

Voucher from her favourite shop

I personally love John Lewis ones and I'm a similar age

jackstini · 14/09/2022 18:41

Stepmum - voucher for gymshark or lululemon?

Rainallnight · 14/09/2022 18:43

God some of these ideas are so depressing.

WaveyHair · 14/09/2022 18:43

Your mum - national trust membership for a year or tickets to a show\event she might like?

Step mum - sports clothing of some sort?

TDoginHats · 14/09/2022 18:43

Not a dressing gown ☺️. I have five already.. thanks DH.

That's what I was thinking 😄

30not13 · 14/09/2022 18:50

Posh champagne💜
Tickets for a gig or membership to National Trust etc💜

I'm in your age bracket and not dead yet thanks

Bloody scarves and gloves 😬

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 14/09/2022 18:54

I'm late 40's and would prefer really nice chocolates and a voucher. If not a voucher then actual money. I'm done with people buying me things that I don't really like.

Hoolihan · 14/09/2022 18:57

I'm target market, would love cashmere socks, White Company pjs, expensive skincare, show/gig tickets, a flower subscription, headphones, a set of unusual books, a bag.

TheOtherHotstepper · 14/09/2022 18:59

I too don't want any more 'stuff', so if you're not going to buy me something you know I need, like replacement gardening gloves, then very fancy chocolate or, even better, take me out and we'll do something together, maybe lunch, maybe something else. Note to the DC, a driving experience would go down v well.

woodhill · 14/09/2022 19:01

TDoginHats · 14/09/2022 18:43

Eventually they get shabby and I wouldn't buy one for myself

I would probably ask them what they would like

evilharpy · 14/09/2022 19:01

I'm only early 40s but I would like:

Wine (not rose)
Other alcohol, maybe related to making cocktails
Wine or gin tasting
Nice glasses, especially if vintage
Mitre saw
Random orbit sander but probably out of budget
A workshop for something like lino printing or upcycling furniture
Plants

I would hate anything outdoorsy like wellies, toiletries as I only use specific stuff, silver jewellery as I only wear yellow gold, or chocolate or rose wine as I hate both.

This is so true. I must admit I had “re-gifting” in mind , if you don’t like it, someone else will, type thing.

of course it’s best to actually know what the person is interested in if it isn’t to be a generic gift.

£75 could get a lovely bottle of cognac and some posh chocolates. Or an air fryer!
Or a beautiful olive tree in a pot. Or a selection of gorgeous cooking oils and olives, sundried tomatoes, smoked garlic, interesting pastas etc from a good Italian deli.
or a box of luxury meats delivered, for a carnivore.
or a splashy deluxe cake and some champagne.

MissyB1 · 14/09/2022 19:03

I’m 54 I’m going to ask my adult dc for a John Lewis gift card.
