Some new trucks for my skateboard.

HewasH20 · 15/09/2022 08:23

Shauna I do like the new lighthouse...

Hellohello1233 · 15/09/2022 09:13

I would recommend something useful, that they can use everyday..especially as we approach winter! or an experience!

  1. cashmere lined leather gloves
  2. Pottery class/painting
  3. afternoon tea
  4. massage
  5. kindle (if they like reading)
drspouse · 15/09/2022 09:29

I walk but would absolutely detest a water bottle and sling. We have a million water bottles and the slings are uncomfortable and scream "old lady".

KalaniM · 14/09/2022 18:18

What are they interested in?

generic gift would be cashmere scarf/ gloves in a safe shade of blue!

I would hate that.

I'm your target demographic and there's very little for £75 I will like as I have pretty much everything that I want (and my cashmere scarves, leather gloves etc cost a lot more than £75!) and if I don't have it, I probably wouldn't want it. So experiences are better, such as:

Afternoon tea somewhere decent (such as the Mandarin Oriental or Claridges)
A speedboat trip on the Thames
Walking with alpacas in the Lake District
A reflexology session
Donation to a wildlife rescue that I support

No to alcohol or chocolates or candles (yawn). And a dressing gown or slippers wouldn't end well for anyone.

I like the speedboat trip idea! Very James Bond feel!

Oh wow, if you don't mind me asking, where are your leather gloves from? They must be super nice at that price point!

Solosunrise · 15/09/2022 09:43

I've wracked my brains, because I don't really want anything. But if pushed, pot plants for my patio, a composter, book/s from my wish list or an attractive large notebook.

Don't get a DNA kit.
My first cousins have just found out they are not sisters because they got them as gifts.

did they grow up as sisters?

Then they ARE sisters, its not about blood... half sisters, step sisters, foster sisters, adopted sisters etc... are all still sisters, its your bond not your blood.

PileofLogs · 15/09/2022 10:04

Yes, this. Also a scarf is so personal and has to be exactly right- it's a really bad generic gift.

Generally I am quite easy to buy for as a genuinely like really nice candles, perfume, cook books, olive oil etc so for me these are not thoughtless presents.

Are either of your recipients walkers? You could buy a book like this www.amazon.co.uk/Times-Britains-Best-Walks/dp/000820070X/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1663232161&sr=8-7 plus a couple of pairs of very good walking socks.

I'd like some lovely mugs eg Emma Lacey.

Personally I would absolutely hate to receive vouchers or cash- to me these are gifts for adults to give to children. Particularly pointless if the other person also gives you money back.

PileofLogs · 15/09/2022 10:05

Definitely don't do an ancestry kit- there are so many issues with these, from not wanting to give your DNA away to risking uncovering truths nobody wanted to know.

polmnlj · 15/09/2022 10:23

A good olive oill. Dh brought from Italy an expensive bottle of olive oil and it was gorgeous.

Cyclingforcake · 15/09/2022 10:50

Fucking hell. I’m in your target demographic and I’ve still got kids in primary school. It was my birthday yesterday and I got a Pokémon (thanks DS), some Lego, a book about running and tickets to a rammstein gig next year. I would kill anyone that gave me a cashmere scarf or heated throw.

but other people do have different tastes.

Im over a decade younger than you and also have kids in primary bar the rammstein gig tickets I would hate everything you got, Im the youngest of my friend group and non of them are into pokemon or lego either.

Its not an age or steriotype things its the fact that people are wildly different.

My mother LOVED a heated throw that she got at 45.

Horses for corses.

Needmorelego · 15/09/2022 11:03

@mam0918 that's why these threads make me laugh. Everyone is so different.
"What can I buy for....." is the question that's up there with "how long is a piece of string".
(But they do kind of keep me amused in the run up to Christmas 🙂)

ReadyForPumpkins · 15/09/2022 11:08

I'm late 40s and I don't want an ancestry kit. I'd rather have pokemon. I think it depends on the person. If you don't know the person well, then a John Lewis voucher will work.

spagbog5 · 15/09/2022 11:13

Champagne/chapel down English sparkling wine

Craft gin

Massage voucher

Aromatherapy associates bath oil

Charbonnel and walker rose and violet creams or champagne truffles

Elemis frangipani body scrub

I'm 50 and would love any of the above .

sashh · 15/09/2022 11:20

I'm 55 I'd like some new New Rock boots, a bit out of budget but a voucher towards them would be nice.

Needmorelego · 15/09/2022 11:24

@ReadyForPumpkins the "just get a John Lewis voucher" thing always makes me laugh too. Unless the person lives in a big city there generally isn't a JL nearby.

Sweetener12 · 15/09/2022 11:24

2023 wall or desk calendars with family photos? Shutterfly does that or you can use calendar creators like Photo calendar maker or Canva.

KalaniM · 15/09/2022 11:34

The rocketbook and flexions is a nice suggestion, I’m keeping that one! I’m also interested in the stylish umbrella and water bottle sling, I totally don’t discriminate against anything that “screams old lady” as I love old ladies. But are they universally considered uncomfortable? Would love recommendations for stylish water bottles, I have dry eyes and Am always lugging water around with me. this thread is great for ideas.

Fortboyard · 15/09/2022 11:47

I often go for smallish thoughtful gift (I always shop independent to find something a bit special) and then give them the rest in cash. That way, you’ve done some thinking, which they’ll appreciate, and they have an item that will remind them of you, but you haven’t splurged on something expensive that maybe they won’t like/need. It’s important to support small businesses, especially if you can actually buy in a real shop (but online if not). They all need every customer they can get right now.

ShowOfHands · 15/09/2022 11:48

I agree re just asking the person.

I wouldn't want any old lady shit, pampering stuff, alcohol, chocolates or "gorgeous" anything whether it's oils or gloves.

I'm really easy to buy for actually. I can always name a book I'm after, genuinely like socks, have lots of hobbies for which I always need various small things, like biscuits, history, puzzles, reading, craft and so on. You just need to ask me or know me well enough to make an educated decision.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 15/09/2022 11:57

I’m mid 40s

I love cashmere scarves and gloves, books, nice chocolates, theatre, afternoon teas, quality (but quirky) jewellery, decent quality candles and skincare, orange, lemon or olive trees

I loathe alcohol, novelty gifts, costume jewellery, ancestry kits (love genealogy but don’t want to give my DNA), dressing gowns (I have 5 that I never wear), things I have to display eg wall art, budget anything and I wouldn’t want olive oil.

I’d much rather have one nice thing than lots of smaller items. I’d also rather people noticed my quirky style as buying me a simple pair of stud earrings wouldn’t go with it for example. I’m more into consumables or experiences than stuff.

hattie43 · 15/09/2022 12:07

I'm mid 50's and would love a Wonder and Chase candle . They are beautifully presented and packed , smell gorgeous and the ceramics holders are useful for use afterwards . I currently have one on my desk holding pens , another in the bathroom holding make up brushes .
Not all the £75 would be spent on the small candle so please use the extra for a lovely book and a toblerone

NoDairyNoProblem · 15/09/2022 13:15

One hundred stars short kimono (£75)
Jo Malone candle or perfume (orange bitters) (£50+)
White company winter and fireside candles (£40)
Wild island sacred tree gin (£40ish)
JL cashmere jumper (£80)
