Tangerine in stocking - a must have or bah humbug?

DH thinks I'm "harking back to your own Dickension childhood" when I said that I'd be putting tangerines in the LO's stockings from FC. This is in addition to the plethora of chocolate and plastic that will also be in there of course.

What's the score on fruit in the modern stocking then?

THEHOLLEANDERIVY · 20/12/2007 16:06

I ALWAYS put a tangerine in dc stockings and we always got them in ours as children.

Mine also have a dot to dot / sudoku book and some pencils in the vain hope that they'll let us sleep until at least 7am.

karen999 · 20/12/2007 16:07

IdrisYouaMerryChristmas · 20/12/2007 16:08

Have to have one in your stocking

Pennies · 20/12/2007 16:09

Yes but what exactly is the tradition- is it a throwback to when fruit was scarce?

Perhaps an apple ipod is modern alternative?

Pennies · 20/12/2007 16:11

Or a Blackberry maybe?

merrylissiemas · 20/12/2007 16:11

must have along with hazelnuts (if they are old enough) and chocolate coins

southeastastra · 20/12/2007 16:11

probably harks back to the days when that was all you got (if you were lucky)

No, its a walnut at the very end, then a tangerine. Deffo have to have chocolate coins in there as well.

I remember that when you got to the tangerine it basically meant that there was nothing else in it. Never actually ate it (what's the fun of eating a tangerine at 5am when you also have a mars selection pack?)

Of course. Sometimes I even make DD eat it.

Lucycat · 20/12/2007 16:20

mmj - you go down the route of trying to keep them quiet for a bit longer too then?

moondog · 20/12/2007 16:22

Comic, what a fantastic idea.

Tangerine, absolutely must have. Agree with Anchovy about the beginning-of-the-end signal. At the very very end in the toe is a shiny coin scrumpled in a lot of tissue paper - we used to get a 50p, now it's a £2.

Choc coins also a necessary perennial (M&S are doing bags which inc. NOTES, which has to be exciting).

The other required item is something-to-draw-with - pods of crayons from Muji this year.

AwayInAMunker · 20/12/2007 16:28

Must have. I'm predicting DS1 will be disgusted and DS2 will try and to eat it without peeling it, so great is his fruit-lust.
