How much do you spend on your Christmas Day Turkey/Joint/Nut Roast?

Every year DHs friend brings us a bird. Apparently it's oraganic, has been raised in good conditions and I suspect it even had a name. I'm not even sure how this arrangement came about now, but it's happened for years and we have the same as our friends are having for Christmas Day, they just double their order. They don't tend to tell us what it is, and I have always presumed it's a turkey so the year we had goose was a surprise (it was cooked before I figured out it wasn't a turkey!) This year I've asked what it is, and asked DH how much it cost. Apparently it's a 10lb (organic) cockerel and cost £35.

I actually have no idea if this is normal or expensive Blush It sounded really expensive, but DH says he usually gives his friend about £40.

DH ordered a wildly expensive Kelly Bronze turkey this year. More than £100 Shock

It'll be delicious and will feed 8 of us for a few meals, so I'm trying not to be too outraged.

Mushrooms0up · 23/12/2021 19:28

That seems cheap! A supermarket turkey is about £20 or so. Butchers up to £100 or more

dementedpixie · 23/12/2021 19:29

Our turkey this year was about £35 I think.

SockFluffInTheBath · 23/12/2021 19:30

Not bought turkey but our butcher’s organic birds start at £70.

Abcdefgottago · 23/12/2021 19:43

Mine was £36 from M&S, serves 6-8. Only 4 of us so enough for turkey, stuffing & cranberry sandwiches on Boxing Day. I did think the prices had crept up a bit from last year, I couldn't afford the one I'd usually get so will be adding my own butter/bacon etc.

mam0918 · 23/12/2021 19:43

I spend £1.75 for cheese pasta as per our tradition.

I did try a nice 'wreath' the other day made out of chestnuts and cranberries (sort of like a veggie sausage roll) and big enough to serve 6, think it was designed as Xmas main but it was reduced due to being on its last sell-by date... think I paid like £2.50 but it was probably around £10 originally and it had been double discounted (usually half then half again).

LethargeMarg · 23/12/2021 19:45

Many years ago I bought an organic turkey from the local farm (first time I hosted a proper Christmas think it was 2006) and it cost £65!! I've always bought a supermarket one since which is usually about £25. I would love to have kept buying local and organic (I don't eat meat anyway but everyone else does) but it's just to expensive with everything else at Christmas

Theworldisquiethere · 23/12/2021 19:49

Quorn roast, I think it was about £2

SomebodysMum · 23/12/2021 19:50

We are having 2 extra large chickens for about £9 altogether and about 743,000 pigs in blankets for at least double that. Yum yum.

MaryAndHerNet · 23/12/2021 19:50

Honey gammon £3.50

LtGreggs · 23/12/2021 19:54

Local farm shop - local-raised turkey for 8 (will have leftovers), pack of sausagemeat stuffing, pigs in blankets etc, and a Xmas day veg box = £70 all in. It feels expensive, but I suspect it will feed 8 of us for 2 hearty main meals.

LtGreggs · 23/12/2021 19:55

We have hosted Christmas the last few years - makes me realise how much £££ it must have cost my parents in all the years before that!

Familyfallout · 23/12/2021 19:57

Free range Turkey crown for DH £20 from Tesco, my home made nut roast £1 for the mixed nuts, rest of ingredients (red lentils, veg, tomato puree) from the cupboard

bigbluebus · 23/12/2021 19:59

I once bought a Kelly bronze turkey from a local farm shop and didn't dare tell DH how much I'd paid. It was £90. This year I've only bought my pigs in blankets from there at £4.50 a pack!
This year we're having rib of beef bought direct from the small holder. It cost £30. We've had meat from them before and it is always excellent. Our veg was bought at the indoor market in the local town this morning. 2 supermarket bags of veg and salad cost £28 but it will actually have flavour and will keep for at least a week if not longer.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 23/12/2021 20:01

Large organic chicken, £20

pradavilla · 23/12/2021 20:08

I don't think that seems too expensive. I think £35-40 for a large Turkey or large Turkey crown is quite normal.

It's only dh and I with 2 pre schoolers this year. We have half a leg of lamb it cost £16.

Rantyrantason · 23/12/2021 20:11

£50 Jimmy’s farm turkey from Costco. Will be all lovely except we’re now catering for 50% less people so will be eating turkey for breakfast, lunch and dinner for weeks!

DementedPanda · 23/12/2021 20:14

Free range turkey butterfly from the butchers for £22.

OwlNChips · 23/12/2021 20:16

£20 beef joint
£15 turkey pie
£12 vegetarian alternative roast

onedayoranother · 23/12/2021 20:21

I've just paid £60 for a stuffed turkey crown from Sainsbury's.

Skyeheather · 23/12/2021 20:32

Turkey Crown feeds six £14.50 (frozen).

Chasingsquirrels · 23/12/2021 20:38

The last few years DP has got one from his local butchers and brought it over with him. He won't tell me how much it costs.

Late DH & I got a bargain turkey from Waitrose om Christmas Eve afternoon a few years ago, I think we paid £17 reduced from about £75.

If I was buying it would be a frozen supermarket one, I have told DP this.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 23/12/2021 20:40

We've got a stuffed turkey breast wrapped in bacon for £10 from Sainers. Will easy do us a couple of days, for starter, main and dessert it's cost us around £30 to feed 3 adults and a toddler.

Clarabellawilliamson · 23/12/2021 20:43

Yeah sounds about right for a cockerel. That is what we were meant to be having at my mums this year - enjoy!

TwinkleToppy · 23/12/2021 21:14

Frozen turkey crown, £11.99, feeds 4-5. It's brining in a big pot of stuff now.
