Do you send/post many Xmas cards?

I was wondering as the custom is dying out isnt it. I am in my fifties and a few have died over the years. I send to people who live far away in particular. I seem to receive less every year!

Then again I only posted about 12 off and gave 2 to neighbours on both sides.

I think the neighbour next door stopped as she didnt give last year either any longer.

Not that I chat to both sides they are aloof but I am used to it.

Any thoughts? Do you enjoy doing cards every year? I have mixed feelings these days.

I think they are mainly pointless these days and the cost of stamps makes them a waste of money too

Batshittery · 22/12/2021 20:17

I'm also in my 50's. I still do cards. I probably give out about 50, 20 of which are sent in the post to people I don't see all year.

I agree that the custom is dying out. We used to send/receive loads.

I used to enjoy writing them, but now I find it a bit of a pain Xmas Smile

I enjoy the whole process - choosing the cards, writing them, sending them, receiving them, putting them on display. For me it’s a chance to think about each person and family member as I write them. I don’t mind if the specific people I send to don’t send me cards, but I would be a bit upset to receive no cards at all and the house wouldn’t feel very Christmassy.

In the past we’ve had so many cards we’ve needed to string them up with special little silver and gold pegs. This is the first year I haven’t needed to get that out. Partly that’s because the kids received and sent a grand total of zero each.

I reckon I have sent about 25 to 30 cards, and still have to do four or five neighbours. We’ve received maybe 10 so far.

TrundlingAlong · 22/12/2021 20:19

I sent about 80 this year. I slightly dread the process of writing them as it takes so long and makes my hands ache, but I like the tradition and love receiving them. I know it's a dwindling tradition, so as I love it I want to do my bit to keep it going. Getting expensive now that stamps have gone up in price now though, especially international ones!

Cards we receive are hung up as decorations, and then reused as gift tags the following year.

TheSpiral · 22/12/2021 20:19

Oh I should add I am mid 40s

AperolWhore · 22/12/2021 20:20

I love sending and receiving cards, it’s a tradition my grandma instilled in me. All of our cards are posted out first class on the last day of November, I send to 6 neighbours along with friends across the U.K. and of course family.

Guacamole001 · 22/12/2021 20:23

My aunt who died aged 92 a few years ago would write about 80 cards every year until the last two years of her life. A pity that the art of sending is unimportant now really.

Some send ecards which is easier!

I do still write a fair few cards but only had 9 to actually post this year. I left it late due to illness and it cost me nearly £10 to post 9 cards first class!
I suspect that's one reason why it's dying out tbh.

Harpydragon · 22/12/2021 20:26

I used to send between 50-70 a year. It was ridiculous. It cost me an absolute fortune in postage alone. I made a very conscious decision about 5 years ago, and now send 2. I donate money to a local charity and send a message on face book.
It took a couple of years but people have gradually stopped sending to us too. I like it, less waste, less cost.

ImInStealthMode · 22/12/2021 20:27

I send about 8-10 each year, only to family and close friends I won't see over Christmas. I like to send them and let those people know I'm thinking of them, and don't mind if I get them in return.

We've received 6 this year.

Newcomer68 · 22/12/2021 20:30

Early 50s here, sent around 25 ish this year plus ecards (we have a Jacquie Lawson subscription which we use a lot through the year) and received about a dozen physical cards and half a dozen ecards.

Guacamole001 · 22/12/2021 20:31

I used to hang them on 2 strings but now they only cover the piano! I think the price of stamps is offputting too.

I’ve posted two and written eight in total. A dying tradition in my life.

caringcarer · 22/12/2021 20:36

I am 60 and sent about 18 cards, only posted 4. The rest handed out to sisters and friends when I met up with them for lunch. We have received 23 cards ATM. I love to choose and write my Xmas cards. For me it is the beginning of Xmas.

ParkheadParadise · 22/12/2021 20:37

Christmas Cards are a pain in the arse.
I bought several packs in November put them somewhere and couldn't find them when I needed them.
Bought more 🙁🙁
I only send cards to friends we don't see much, about 6 in total this year.
Give to the neighbour's dd likes to post them through the doors.
I still buy family cards sisters/ brothers/nieces/nephews.
We have received about 20 this year definitely less than last year. Hopefully, we don't receive any next year 😆

escapingthecity · 22/12/2021 20:38

We send about 150. Lots of friends, big family. Really important way for us to stay in touch with lots of people.

Trumpton · 22/12/2021 21:01

I send about 40. 15 or so of which are homemade specifically for the recipients.
Every year I keep the home made ones I receive and every year rehang them in a special display.

mommybear1 · 22/12/2021 21:01

Have always sent cards but this year although you don't give to receive I've noticed a considerable dip in return ones and for the cost and time it takes to send I don't think I'll bother next year.

DramaAlpaca · 22/12/2021 21:05

I'm also in my 50s. I hate doing cards and this year decided to opt out of doing them. I just sent one, to my parents who live in a different country to me. It's been a relief not to do them, I'm just too busy.

NameChangeCity123 · 22/12/2021 21:06

I hand delivered all mine as they are all for
People near by

ExquisitelyDecorated · 22/12/2021 21:10

I send about 50, 30 posted, 20 local. Down from about 75 a few years ago. There are some people who I only keep in touch with that way and we always write a letter in our cards to each other. Quite a few have fallen by the wayside though, if the only contact was a card and nothing else in common, no note in the card year after year then not worth it any more. My DCs like going out and delivering all the local ones, its become part of the family traditions.

SmallElephant · 22/12/2021 21:13

About 25-30. I have cut down this year.

SockFluffInTheBath · 22/12/2021 21:17

I send about 30, mostly to family. I hate them in the house and hide them on a bookshelf in the dining room Xmas Grin

Guacamole001 · 22/12/2021 21:19

A neighbour in another road said in the old days he would send a card to everybody in the whole road! Community feel must have been alive and well.
