I have brought DC to London to see Matilda as a major part of their Xmas gift. I knew it was a risk, but had we not come, and it had been on, we would have lost £300 for the 4 tickets and the train/hotel costs.
Ideas for nice things to do to take the sting out of it would be very much appreciated. Thank you

Aw that's shit, presumably it will be rescheduled for the New Year? Is there another show you could see instead or has everything been cancelled?

London Eye, Riverboat trip? My kids always love that.

Doveyouknow · 21/12/2021 12:31

Oh no, that's a shame. Trip into the west end to see the lights? Or walk along south bank. Some of the museums are still open and you should be able to get tickets. Or ice skating?

RicStar · 21/12/2021 12:32

I dont know if you can still book it but ice skating at Somerset House or National History Museum or even at winter wonderland. Cinema to see West Side Story... lots of lovely lights around Oxford Street/ covent garden etc afternoon tea - would think hotels have some availability.

Oh no. How old is dc? Ice cream sundae bar at fortnum and mason?

Coronawireless · 21/12/2021 12:34

Long walk along south bank, stopping for hot chocolate and other treats. Tower bridge all lit up. Covent Garden and Piccadilly will look lovely (for kids). Open top bus tour by dusk with promise of pizza afterwards?

Coronawireless · 21/12/2021 12:35

Oh yes Somerset House!

Bussinbussin · 21/12/2021 12:36

Hamley's? Depending on age of course!

whachatalkinaboutwillis · 21/12/2021 12:37

They are 14 and 16, I realise some may feel a bit old for Matilda but we saw it when they were 6 and 8 and it is there all time fav thing we ever did, they have been begging for a re run for years. They are gutted :(

Too top it off I am 90% sure I have just stepped in human shit outside Kings Cross station. FML.

Right, I am going to get a grip and make this a magically festive adventure of a day. Thanks for the suggestions. I am disabled to long walks are not an option but lots of these are perfect. Thank you

See if you can get day tickets for another show. I had the same thing Saturday- got an email Friday night to say Mamma Mia had cancelled I booked Frozen through Disney days and got 2 seats in the stalls for £20 each- it was a fantastic show! If not spend time looking at the lights, there's loads of Xmas markets to enjoy too.

Citygirl2019 · 21/12/2021 12:38

I would go to the late ticket box office and see if there are any other shows you can see.

whachatalkinaboutwillis · 21/12/2021 12:38

&Juliet??

officiallondontheatre.com/tkts/

They have tickets for today's performances that are on. Some will be discounted.

The ice rink at the Natural History museum will probably still have tickets , but the museum itself I think is closed.

Confuzzlediddled · 21/12/2021 12:40

&juliet is fantastic, if you can get tickets for that they will love it, my 18 year old did

CaurnieBred · 21/12/2021 12:40

&Juliet is great: def go for that if it is an option

Embracelife · 21/12/2021 12:40

Walk up to granary sq from kings x first have some nice food in the canopy market. And coal drops
Winter wonderland book a slot
Southbank market stalls

Confuzzlediddled · 21/12/2021 12:40

try todaytix for last minute tickets

Billiesmovingout · 21/12/2021 12:43

The Globe will have tickets. You could get there and back by boat.

AgathaMystery · 21/12/2021 12:44

Try Thames Rocket tours. They are incredible and worth every penny. If you want a discount code blue light card do them

TwigTheWonderKid · 21/12/2021 12:46

Ice cream parlour at Fortnums is a great idea. It's fab and Fortnum's is incredibly Christmassy at the moment.

There are great food stalls on South Bank. If they like burgers I cannot recommend the ones from Burger & Beyond highly enough.

Annabel's nightclub is Mayfair is looking spectacular (done up like a gingerbread house) and it looks like there are tickets to Winterwonderland available tomorrow so you could combine that.

Attictroll · 21/12/2021 12:47

If your near kings cross I would take teenagers for a walk down canal to Camden and let them shop and eat

whachatalkinaboutwillis · 21/12/2021 12:47

I have booked for &Juliet - only £40, and great seats, thanks so so much. I will sort a lovely day from other suggestions. The premier inn staff told me they have 75% cancellations today. I really feel for hospitality staff, it is so hard atm.

Ice skating at the Natural History and looking at the lights at Oxford Circus and Carnaby st. Look round Harrod's Christmas department if that's your thing.

The natural history museum is closed from today, 21 December, until 27 December due to staffing shortages. But the ice rink is open.

Sorry, OP. Hope you find some fun things to see and do around London. I have read about 40-50% of shows are getting cancelled right now. Very sad for all concerned.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 21/12/2021 12:51

Good luck OP.

I thought the National History Museum had now shut? So worth ringing/booking ahead before travelling to any particular area just in case.

DaisyDaisydoo · 21/12/2021 12:51

& Juliet is INCREDIBLE!!! you will have the best time
