What do I do with it? We already have a large chicken (no one is that keen on turkey), but I can't see how gammon "goes" with all the other stuff, particularly gravy!

Any tips/suggestions most welcome.

I love it with cranberry sauce

AlwaysLatte · 19/12/2021 17:08

It's great as an addition. We usually simmer it with onion/cloves/celery/carrot then cut the fat off and use a maple glaze to roast it for 20 mins or so. You can also the. Use it as a cold meat for meals afterwards.

stopringingme · 19/12/2021 17:12

We have gammon , great as a roast dinner and always loads left over for the following days.

thickthighs73 · 19/12/2021 17:13

I’m sure there’s a coke and JD recipe, google it

DappledThings · 19/12/2021 17:15

We have the big ham joint on Boxing Day. This idea of two different meats at the main meal is weird to me.

Timetoretiretospain · 19/12/2021 17:17

@ThroughThickAndThin01

It’s a amazing cooked in coke. Amazing. I use nigellas recipe.
Me too - it’s delicious!
rookiemere · 19/12/2021 17:19

Stupid question as I've got a gammon joint for the slow cooker. The mustard and honey sounds nice , could I use English mustard or does it need to be whole grain?

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 19/12/2021 17:25

We always have a gammon and a turkey at Christmas.

Do you have a slow cooker? I put the gammon in on Christmas Eve in the slow cooker with a tin of pineapple chunks in juice and a glass of apple juice. Leave on low all day. Do not eat the pineapple as it absorbs the salt but the pineapple and apple.juice.make it sweet and lovely

RagzReturnedUnwrapped · 19/12/2021 17:27

We always have gammon, lamb and turkey. Turkey because it's traditional and I like making curry and pie with the leftovers. Gammon again traditional but also goes well cold with cheese or in sandwiches and keeps well. Tend to freeze the ends/chunks that's don't slice and chop it up into a maceroni cheese.
Lamb because DH likes it and it makes a nice gravy. Then it's lovely warmed up on boxing day with bubble and squeak.

We started the 3 meats thing when we used to host for Christmas and now it's just what we do, even though only 4 of the 5 of us at home will eat them (DD has chicken nuggets and pesto past for her Christmas lunch, she hates roasts!).
It sounds like a lot of work, but DH usually does the lamb and I do the ham the day before in the slow cooker. Leftovers keep us going for about a week after!

This year I'll probably slow cook the gammon/ham (may try the cider suggestion, can't bring myself to use Cola as I hate the stuff) on Christmas eve (or rather, tell DH to do it while I'm at work!) and then glaze it in the oven, chill it and slice it.

Nothing weird we used to have 4!

We often have turkey & gammon or chicken & gammon, goes well together.

ConsuelaHammock · 19/12/2021 17:32

Soak it overnight to draw out the salt. Then stick it in the slow cooker with a bottle of Coke.

GutsInMay · 19/12/2021 17:32

I think gammon / hot ham goes well with poultry in the same salty way that pigs in blankets do.

It also goes well with fruity / acidic things like the cranberry sauce and red cabbage. And creamy nutty things like bread sauce and stuffing, and cauliflower cheese if you have that.

Gammon goes better with chicken than with beef, IMO.

AdoraBell · 19/12/2021 17:40

🤦‍♀️ I didn’t want gammon this year until I saw this thread.

tealandteal · 19/12/2021 17:44

We usually have gammon, here it’s not as popular for lunch as the turkey but very popular for leftovers! Love it with a honey mustard glaze.

Sickoffamilydrama · 19/12/2021 17:45

OMG I need coke coked gammon now it's so good especially with molasses on as well.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/12/2021 17:46

@StucklnAMuumuuCantGetOutOflt

Course it does - it's an option with beef and turkey at our local carvery. Alternatively, I have done it before with peas and potato dauphinoise, no gravy. Have also had with pineapple, egg and roast tatties and mushroom-onion-courgette mix. But at the carvery, we add it to the other meat and chuck gravy all over it. No different to having gravy on your piggies in blankets.
I beg you OP, do not take inspiration for Christmas lunch from a local carvery.. 🤦‍♀️

No, it won’t go with Christmas lunch, but you could cook it in advance and have in for sandwiches in the evening, and then as cold cuts with the turkey on Boxing Day - or save it till boxing day and have it hot (possibly cracking out the retro Nigella coke receipe) either would be lovely.

londonmummy1966 · 19/12/2021 17:49

I usually boil it on about 23rd cover with water and bring to the boil. Strain the water out and then put it back in the pan either with cider or water and cloves and boil it for a couple of hours. Once its cool wrap in foil and keep in fridge. Put it (still wrapped in foil) in the bottom of the oven for about an hour before Christmas lunch.

Cold gammon and turkey in a sandwich on boxing day is yummy.....

MissyB1 · 19/12/2021 17:50

Beef and gammon here. Dh takes the skin off, scores it, and covers it in marmalade, brown sugar and cloves, then roasts.

FabriqueBelgique · 19/12/2021 17:53

We have a Turkey and a gammon every year! It does go with gravy. My DP boils it then sticks cloves in it, smothers it in honey and then roasts it. Bloody delicious 😋

mildtomoderate · 19/12/2021 17:55

I usually do gammon with dauphinoise potatoes and green beans. Mustard on the side. I boil it in Coca Cola and towards the end I slather honey on it.

HelloDulling · 19/12/2021 17:56

@stayingaliveisawayoflife

Gammon and parsley sauce! Has to be done. This is usually Christmas Eve meal with left overs on Boxing Day.
One of my very favourite meals. With lots of green veg, and mashed potatoes.
PinkTonic · 19/12/2021 17:57

I don’t think gammon goes with gravy either and we have our Christmas ham on a different day. Baked or hasselback potatoes and leeks in cheese sauce. Then cold with bubble and squeak or chips and coleslaw.

Disfordarkchocolate · 19/12/2021 17:59

I soak mine in water overnight.

Slow cooker with original Coka Cola and finish with a mustard and honey glacé in the over for about 30 minutes.

Wonderful hot and cold.

LBOCS2 · 19/12/2021 18:00

We do gammon with baked potatoes and cauliflower cheese on Christmas Eve. Then you can have the leftovers cold on Christmas Day evening for sandwiches :)
