Board games for adults

Any recommendations please?

It's for me, my dd (18) and my mum, but I would ideally like something that can also be played by just 2 people for when we're not all together.

We already have Carcassonne, Splendor, Azul, Century Spice Road and dd and I have Duel. We love them all.

I'm going to get another expansion for Carcassonne (we already have the first two), but would like something new as well.

My adult children love playing cards against humanity if only to laugh and laugh when their Dad always wins (he's a quiet bookish professor type)

MinnieJackson · 16/12/2021 01:06

We normally just play cards (whist, rummy, pontoon) and darts, or the small pub/ food quiz boxes you can get at Mark's. I want Scattergories! We always play the ABC game anyway, but this has 48 categories lol. I can't afford it but im going to try and make my own categories and put the letters in a hat. I know they do 'something you plug in', no idea any other categories. Does anyone have it?

MinnieJackson · 16/12/2021 01:08

@pinkmeeple do you prefer question games?

MinnieJackson · 16/12/2021 01:10

@Crispynoodle I really want this but not sure my parents would play it. Is their a winner?

Fivemoreminutes1 · 16/12/2021 04:14

Ticket to Ride and Pandemic

bravotango · 16/12/2021 04:21

We've just got Viticulture which is great, really recommend. Two player games we like are Agricola and Targi. Wingspan is great too, Castles of Burgundy slightly more complicated but also good

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 16/12/2021 04:26

We love Catan and Wingspan

Authenticcelestialmusic · 16/12/2021 04:28

Sagrada is good for 2-4 players. So is kingdomno.

Wingspan is also good but I prefer with more players as more egg laying/flocking etc, it sometimes feels short with 2. But you may prefer that as it can take a while with more.
Quacks of quedlingburg is a great game but I’ve never played with only 2 players. You can see online walk throughs if you look on you tube.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 16/12/2021 04:35

We is usually play Trivial Pursuit and we have some children's questions so that the kids can play properly. We also have About Time which is a history game, and I really like 30 seconds where you have to explain words for your team to guess.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 16/12/2021 05:04

Catan doesn’t really work with 2 players. You have to adapt it significantly but these rules might be helpful print-and-play.asmodee.fun/files/catan/catan_2_player_scenario_en.pdf

No but there's a two player card game called rivals of catan which is ace

EnidFrighten · 16/12/2021 05:28

We like forbidden Island, you can play it with two or more players and it's a co-operative game so a slightly different feel. Also the rules are not too complicated

Caramellatteplease · 16/12/2021 05:46

Lords of Waterdeep (game that most often leaves the shelf, plays as well fo 2 players as any up to 5, 6 with expansion. Easy to learn but still interesting strategy wise on your 100th play)
Canvas (such a pretty game)
Sagrada
Villainous (if you are disney fans)
Ticket to Ride
Lords of Hellas (if you want a properly in depth game that's strategically interesting but surprisingly simple to play) can be hard to get hold off
The great western trail (again a properly complex game, but it has cows and trains which makes it incredibly cool)

Forbidden Island is a bit dull with limited replay ability, also theres usually only one correct move, riots have have started over less. Catan is great 3 players but you need a seperate game for 2.

Driposaurus · 16/12/2021 05:52

I would get Kingdomino (tends to be a short game) or Ticket To Ride (is more of an hours play).

Caramellatteplease · 16/12/2021 05:59

To critique my own list... 🙄🙄🙄

I wouldn't get Sagrada if I had Azul if I was at the start of my games collection (although if I didnt have Azul I would get sagrada of the two). They both kinda fall into the same pattern matching type game, if you fancy playing one you'll probably be quite happy playing either so grab sonething else (Waterdeep) for some variety. To a certain extent that's also true of canvas.

MrsLeclerc · 16/12/2021 13:32

Trivial pursuit and Cluedo are our favourites. I have bought a new one called 221b Baker St which is a Sherlock Holmes themed board game. Looking forward to giving that a try.

BlueChampagne · 16/12/2021 14:40

Second Viticulture (just got the expansion)
Agricola
Caverna
Fields of Arle
A Feast for Odin

suzyscat · 17/12/2021 00:41

Machi Koro is amazing and the expansion packs are brilliant - it's like monopoly but cute, short and lovely. It's not brutal at all.

Marrakesh - you are all selling rugs in a market place. You're placing tiny rugs to claim naked space and earn money. It's lovely.

I like ticket to ride, my partner doesn't.

Pandemic is good but fiddly and long. I prefer the app now.

JimCarreysMask · 17/12/2021 00:41

221b Baker Street is fab

Lyonesse2020 · 17/12/2021 06:49

Otrio is very popular here. It's more or less 3D noughts and crosses, for 2-4 players. Quick to play, but sessions tend to be quite long as it's quite addictive.

dollywoodlooksgood · 17/12/2021 07:47

Parks is an excellent game and very relaxing. It is a set collection/worker placement style game where you collect resources to visit US national parks, which you then add to your collection to score points at the end. The artwork is beautiful.

drawthelatch · 17/12/2021 15:32

We like Dominion, it’s a deck building game and works well with two, lots of different options.
221b Baker Street is great, if you’re up for lots of reading and detective work.
The two player version of Codenames might be good, it’s a great game and easy to learn.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 17/12/2021 15:43

221b Baker Street is great. We also love exploding kittens.

Bells3032 · 17/12/2021 15:48

Pandemic (and if you like that then their legacy games are phenomenal...they got us through the 2021 lockdown). not purely two players but we find it best with two.

  • Rivals for Catan
  • Odin's Ravens (for something quick)
  • Munchkins
  • Plague Inc
  • Horrified
  • Istanbul (dice game)

We've also played the Exit escape room games as two and really enjoyed them (do the older ones over the newer games as they're much better). They're single use but lots of fun

rrhuth · 17/12/2021 15:48

Another vote for Forbidden Island and TTR

Also love Agricola and Port Royal

Pandemic is a great game but not ideal for forgetting about Covid Grin
