Why do I need to clean under the beds for Christmas?

I am so bad for this, every year I end up wasting the whole of December trying to make my life perfect by doing stupid things like cleaning under the beds and emptying and wiping the cupboards out instead of just enjoying Christmas with my family.
Is anyone else doing this?
what is it? it feels almost like I'm nesting but I'm preparing for the baby Jesus instead of my own baby Confused!!!!

I always have to have a reasonably clean house at Christmas before the tree goes up, also clean fridge and oven. But once the tree goes up it's fun time!

9999A · 15/12/2021 12:00

Don’t bother with all that cleaning !!!
Your Rellies will come in and make a right mess !!! 😂
And I’m sure they won’t be pulling your beds
out to look for muck 😂
Just enjoy your Christmas. 👍
And have a great Time

HepzibahGreen · 15/12/2021 12:28

Oh God the oven.
I’m not too well at the moment so am delegating to him indoors bwahaha.
I’ll tell him it’s for Santa.

Chakraleaf · 15/12/2021 12:42

Nope. No one is coming over anyway!

itwasntaparty · 15/12/2021 12:45

I don't think I've ever cleaned under my bed. Been in this house for 12 years 🤷‍♀️

Shallwegoforawalk · 15/12/2021 12:49

@Scbchl

Most people dust, hoover and mop every day do they not?
Hahahahahahahahahaha

No

AD80 · 15/12/2021 12:52

I am usually like but currently have covid so not had the energy to do as much this year. I desperately want to get my carpet cleaner out before Christmas though 😪

One year I woke up Christmas Eve and took DS's apart because I was worried where his new stuff would go!

MrsJBaptiste · 15/12/2021 12:58

@Ragwort

Dust, hoover and mop every day? Hmm only on Mumsnet.
I'd say the complete opposite - most people on here pride themselves on barely ever cleaning, ironing or changing their bedding...
TheBareTree · 15/12/2021 13:02

I do this. I go round the house, room by room, clearing out and sorting every cupboard. I find it really enjoyable even though I’m normally a bit of a slattern. I love having tidy cupboards for the whole week they remain like that.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 15/12/2021 13:03

Nah....I have tidied the freezer and made a list of what is in there, and the fridge is getting a good going over tomorrow, but that's cos there is something ominous (possibly a blob of cheesey mash) on the back freezy bit that's almost gained sentience, so that is for World Protection And The Greater Good.

I do it when I see it needs doing but I have a pretty high threshold for dust and clart, PLUS I like it to be noticed so no point maintaining too high a standard imo.

And I am still resentful from last week when I cleaned all the windows, inside and out, the weather blew and howled and now they are all filthy. The cat also sneezed on the inside of the bedroom window.

I do cook from scratch almost every day though and am a bit laundry obsessed. So the kitchen is good and there's no manky clothes hanging about.

Joystir59 · 15/12/2021 13:09

Hoovered and mopped yesterday. Dear dog has sprinkled his damned white hairs all over everything all.over again. Not hoovering and mopping today. Nope.

Joystir59 · 15/12/2021 13:09

I defrosted the freezer the other day though!

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 15/12/2021 13:26

I just sorted out my first aid box. Everything is stressing me out today and I'm knackered. I started Christmas shopping in September this year and I am still bloody stressed. Inherited perfectionism!

DillDanding · 15/12/2021 13:36

I love a pre Christmas deep clean. I find it very therapeutic. And I like everywhere to be perfect for the festive period.

FabriqueBelgique · 15/12/2021 13:45

Yes I do and I don’t think it’s a waste of time at all! Houses need a deep clean at least once a year. I’ve just done some cleaning for a relative who is ill and she would be mortified if I had shown her all the things I’ve seen under her sofa and bed! I was nearly throwing up tbh.

MsAgnesDiPesto · 15/12/2021 13:46

@Scbchl

No.

It really doesn’t need it.

You are making work if that’s the case for you.

Unless your family is incapable of not dropping stuff on the floor, or is made up of a group of very large and hairy animals with perpetually muddy feet.

penguinwithasuitcase · 15/12/2021 13:46

I love a deep clean so we have as little as possible to do over the festive period as possible.

The more we can tick off the usual list, the more flopping time we all get - so DSS, DP and I all pick a key room of the house each (bathroom, kitchen, living room) and 'race' to get it sparkling over one afternoon. Two rounds of that and then we flop for a fortnight Grin

BuddhaAtSea · 15/12/2021 13:58

I’ve got a thing about ‘stuff under the bed’, under my bed there’s NOTHING. I don’t care how handy it would be to shove a box or two underneath, I need it to be NOTHING.
So yes, I hoover and mop under the bed at least once a week in the winter, more often in the summer. I also Hoover the mattress every time I change the sheets, which is also weekly. The dog sleeps on my bed though.

Winter cleaning...yes, I do. I take a few days off to sort out the house, presents etc. Nobody’s going to inspect it, or see, but a deep cleaned house smells different:)
I wouldn’t judge, notice or care if my friends didn’t 😂

WalkingOnTheCracks · 15/12/2021 14:00

…most people on here pride themselves on barely ever cleaning, ironing or changing their bedding...

I really resent the implication here. We change the bedding like clockwork every Easter, whether it needs it or not

GiltEdges · 15/12/2021 14:05

At least it's just the cleaning OP. My "D"H and his family seem to get the painting bug roundabout this time every year. I've spent many a Christmas Eve desperately trying to clear up the remnants to make the house presentable again for Christmas Day. Apparently it doesn't feel like Christmas to them unless there's the smell of freshly painted walls in the air Grin

BestZebbie · 15/12/2021 14:41

hmm.....I clean under beds at Christmas because I get out the presents hidden/shoved under there and it is therefore the only time of the year I actually kneel down and look into that space.....

wildthingsinthenight · 15/12/2021 15:14

I used to do this. In a panic.
I once panic ironed on Christmas Eve as I thought the basket should be empty for Christmas??? Why?!!
Nowadays I'll tidy and do a quick dust. DH will hoover. Then get a snowball and turn a blind eye! Wink

sueelleker · 15/12/2021 15:19

@lazylinguist

Nope I don't do this. I hoover under the beds every time I hoover though. Or rather my robot hoover does!
My divan bed practically touches the floor-a dust bunny would have trouble getting under it, let alone a robot hoover!
lazylinguist · 15/12/2021 15:36

I have fairly tall beds and wooden floors, so the dust bunnies would be clearly and constantly visible if I didn't hoover underneath. No effort if the robot does it though!

Liz1tummypain · 15/12/2021 15:53

Crikey. Life's too short. Ask yourself : does it really matter? And if the answer's no, then sit back and forget about it all. I only clean under the bed when I'm rearranging the furniture for some reason.
