Why do I need to clean under the beds for Christmas?

I am so bad for this, every year I end up wasting the whole of December trying to make my life perfect by doing stupid things like cleaning under the beds and emptying and wiping the cupboards out instead of just enjoying Christmas with my family.
Is anyone else doing this?
what is it? it feels almost like I'm nesting but I'm preparing for the baby Jesus instead of my own baby Confused!!!!

@SpiderinaWingMirror

I had a conversation with a neighbour where she told me how often she wipes out cupboards. I couldn't join in cos she would have been horrified with my truthful answer which is when we move house.
An ex boyfriend of mine moved after 20 years plus in the same house.

When we were cleaning the place to leave it all neat and tidy for the people moving in I was giving the kitchen the once over and he told me that in all the time he had lived there, he had never, ever wiped out his kitchen cupboards.

The weird thing is ... they were clean!? Confused

@Scbchl

Most people dust, hoover and mop every day do they not?
Erm, not if they have full time jobs they don't, no. My cleaning, of the minimal for health and hygiene variety, gets done at the weekend.

@Fontella I bet he never bloody cooked, though?

If you live on oven food, microwave meals and stuff from the kettle/fridge (instant noodles, salad etc) then your cupboards won’t get dirty, really.

It’s only if you cook…

NoSquirrels · 15/12/2021 01:24

The only reason ‘Christmas’ would trigger ‘under the beds’ is a) guests staying or b) present-stashing.

But I made a solemn pact with myself when we moved here to a bigger property after decades of using every available storage space - No Stuff Under Beds.

There’s a particular horror that underbed dust bunnies generates so I resolved to never suffer again.

You're right, he couldn't cook for shit.

Er...

I have the Christmas cleaning urge but struggle for time. We had a clear out weekend before putting decs up but I didn't get to hoover under the sofa (it takes 2 to move it) and my mind just keeps going back there on some bizarre cleaning fantasy.

Get your household a Robovac for Xmas. Then he'll do under the beds for you while you mainline Baileys

You meant every month right?

WTAF! Beds have underneaths that need cleaning? Who knew?
My thoughts exactly! Underneath the bed is where the tumbleweeds of cat and dog hair go to hang out.
Borracha · 15/12/2021 05:27

Oh god I do this too and this year I just won't have time as I'm working right up until Christmas Eve.

It is stressing me the fuck out. I'm not just talking about sticking the hoover round (that happens every day anyway thanks to tiled floors that show every speck of dirt and 3 young kids running in and out of the garden all day)

I am itching to pull apart every room in the house and sort and clean everything. Why?!?!?!?

We have a cleaner who comes in weekly, which is normally enough to calm the voice in my head that screams THE HOUSE IS A TIP but when it comes to Christmas, only an extreme de-clutter and deep clean will do! (I get the same urge before I go on holiday in the summer as well!)

No one I know does this. I certainly don’t and never did.

They do not. I sweep up in the kitchen every day because the kids always drop stuff at dinner time. Thats the only cleaning I do every day without fail. Hoovering maybe once a week, we have a robot vac which does the worst areas about every other day.
Bagelsandbrie · 15/12/2021 06:48

😆😆😆😆😆 @ nesting for baby Jesus

GemmaRuby · 15/12/2021 06:53

I definitely do not do this!
I do need to have a little tidy of the spare room before MIL comes to stay though.

HunterGatherer · 15/12/2021 07:02

Nope, I've never had the urge to do this. I scrub everything before we go on holiday though! No idea why.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 15/12/2021 07:09

I only clean under the bed when I pull out the under bed storage and see the detritus that’s accumulated, so roughly twice a year?
My house is passably clean and I have never spring cleaned in my life!

Sundancerintherain · 15/12/2021 07:13

Yes I do it. My DM also used to change every bed in the house on Xmas eve then wash and tumble dry everything- growing up I thought the perfume of Bounce tumble dryer sheets was the smell of Xmas Xmas Grin

dementedma · 15/12/2021 07:14

Clean...under the what now? Is this a thing?

MeanderingGently · 15/12/2021 07:16

Its called deep cleaning, very good for any house. Hotels do deep cleaning for Christmas (sometimes after Christmas/New Year when the footfall is low) and it makes sense. Houses need a deep clean at least once a year on top of the weekly/monthly clean, why would you wait until the summer to do it when, by then, you just want to be outside, enjoying the decent weather?

Sundancerintherain · 15/12/2021 07:20

Actually this thread has made me very excited to get my arse in gear and decide what day to do my pre Xmas clean. And buy Xmas scented Zoflora. And sort my Xmas playlist . And book the dog into the groomers for the same day ..........

Practicebeingpatient · 15/12/2021 07:31

The only time I clean under beds is when I buy a new bed so not very often! We manage to live productive happy lives in very good health. We normally have 10-12 extended family over for Christmas Day none of whom have ever complained about the dust under the beds in the bedrooms they don't enter!

I'm quite fussy about the insides of cupboards though so they are kept clean all year around without the need for a Christmas blitz.

OTOH our cleaner has cancelled our slot next week (family illness, not Covid) and I am dreading having to do the bathrooms and kitchen floor myself. I like them polished and super shiny but haven't got the patience to do it well myself.

Yep - it takes half an hour a day - no more.
