Why do I need to clean under the beds for Christmas?

I am so bad for this, every year I end up wasting the whole of December trying to make my life perfect by doing stupid things like cleaning under the beds and emptying and wiping the cupboards out instead of just enjoying Christmas with my family.
Is anyone else doing this?
what is it? it feels almost like I'm nesting but I'm preparing for the baby Jesus instead of my own baby Confused!!!!

@dementedma

Clean...under the what now? Is this a thing?
Meh. It'll never catch on.

@Peanutmnm

No, you're right. You have to clean under the beds and empty out that cupboard filled with empty jars, wash it and completely rearrange where you put all the food. Ideally you'd do a big clear out of the freezer and wipe all the plug sockets.

For baby Jesus.

I do defrost and re-jig the freezer, but that's only so I have room to store my frozen meat joints!

Your thread title op and then the post gave me a real giggle! I do this but can't achieve the high standards I once had as I'll put my back out. For me though it's, like others have said, a new year thing, perhaps an old hedge witch practice originally, and I quite like it.

Karmagoat · 15/12/2021 10:23

I hear you OP, I stress myself out something stupid that the house has to look perfect for Christmas, fuck knows why cos its only me DH and DCs Hmm.
My Mum and Nan were like it as well. Bloody bonkers.

MarmitesMyMate · 15/12/2021 10:31

I used to. Not now.
All I make sure is done is hoover polish and washing ironing up together. Which in general it always is anyway.

LuckyAmy1986 · 15/12/2021 10:39

@PupInAPram I don't have a full time job and STILL don't hoover, mop and dust every day .. Wink

fruitbrewhaha · 15/12/2021 10:43

I do it because we get babysitters in! I manically clean for a teenage girl who probably wont notice but not for myself.

perhaps father christmas can see under the beds.

garlictwist · 15/12/2021 10:44

I have never cleaned under the beds and I am not going to start for Christmas. You are all bonkers! Why make extra work for yourselves?

PlantsAndSpaniels · 15/12/2021 10:46

I tend to do a deep clean before I put the Christmas decorations up and then don't really touch it again until they come down. Fairy lights don't show up the dust as much as normal ones!

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 15/12/2021 10:46

No. I love December because having the decorations up means I don't feel inclined to dust!

HepzibahGreen · 15/12/2021 10:54

Of course I do this Op it’s not just you. I do the big Xmas clean around, um, the 15th (shit!). I also do a big clean before I go on holiday. I’m a terrible slattern most of the time, so Xmas is the only time I do the behind the furniture/ top of the kitchen cupboards type of cleaning.
Love having a clean house for Xmas, and my family love being told off for trying to continue to live normally in it without me shrieking “ don’t you dare make crumbs!”
It’s all part of the festive season Wink

HepzibahGreen · 15/12/2021 10:54

He definitely can

WalkingOnTheCracks · 15/12/2021 11:10

@Scbchl

Most people dust, hoover and mop every day do they not?
I was so confused by this that I pressed ‘Report This Post’ by mistake.

Sorry, HQ.

“Why are you cleaning so maniacally? Isn’t the cleaning lady coming today?”

“Yes! She’ll be here at two! Don’t walk on the kitchen floor! Fuck - look at this bathroom! Where’s the Flash?”

Antsgomarching · 15/12/2021 11:16

I think it’s a mental preparation thing. On some level you still believe xmas will be a time of wine, food and relaxation and you clean as a “so I can just relax and not have to do anything” kind of thing. It’s probably some kind of ritual humans do to earn rest (I don’t find xmas that restful tbh) and to prepare for hosting and feasting.

I’ve started clearing out my wardrobe for some reason so I’m not judging you.

Plumjamorcrumblyham · 15/12/2021 11:20

I feel the same OP. I think it’s because I want to be able to properly relax over Xmas so I want everything just right.

I won’t be cleaning out cupboards or anything like that though. Just a decent clean of the whole house.

I’ve been following TOMM except on bedroom day…sometimes I can’t face tidying the bedrooms 🤪 but because I’ve been following it mostly everywhere else, we aren’t doing too bad.

But I will still clean everywhere next week!

thatsallineed · 15/12/2021 11:27

No. Dark winter nights, decorations and sparkly lights cover a multitude of sins.

I wouldn't go into a cleaning frenzy in mid-winter. That's what spring cleaning is for.

ImFree2doasiwant · 15/12/2021 11:42

Im not cleaning under the beds but I am having a big declutter, and cleaning more thoroughly in some areas. Feels wrong putting decorations where there are cobwebs.

Marshwawows · 15/12/2021 11:43

Confused Does baby Jesus have a dust allergy then?

Lyricallie · 15/12/2021 11:46

Ha my mum is like this. Every year I say to my husband we really need to do a deep clean before Christmas. He looks at me like I'm mad, especially as we don't even spend Christmas at our house.

fastandthecurious · 15/12/2021 11:49

I clean and sort to make room for presents 🙈 DH's family go mental every year with gifts and we have a toddler with way too many toys in a small house! I do a massive clean on around 22nd and then that's it, I don't spend loads of time doing it!

Wexone · 15/12/2021 11:54

I have a company coming in for a deep clean next week, its the only date they can come. I live in a rental and it wasn't cleaned properly before we moved in after being done up, the bits they missed are driving me wrong and i don't have the time to do it myself. I grew up in a house that this was done all the time every year, i think its because we had people coming over and my mother worked a good bit over xmas too. For myself i do it because i am at home more over the over xmas and see the stuff that needs doing so don't want to spend my holidays having to do it myself. I do however clean under my bed every month. I have dogs and cats, one of my dogs sleep under my bed, it needs to be hoovered every month., The dust and dog hair is unreal.

TheHolyPotato · 15/12/2021 11:55

New year at the earliest.

lazylinguist · 15/12/2021 11:59

Nope I don't do this. I hoover under the beds every time I hoover though. Or rather my robot hoover does!
